Every time I hear this song in the context of Steven universe, i always think that Steven tried to kill himself after everything that happened. His gem half survives and Connie tries to comfort him. Instead of that, he just gets angry at her. The “she still holds the power after years of tears and confronting his fears he’s dead on the record for the world to hear” refers to Steven not being able to take being compared to his mother anymore. Him being upset at Connie is probably because if this goes off during future she had rejected him. At the end, I feel like he went to kill white
Theory based off of this animatic: Steven is absolutely broken. He can’t find another reason to live after Connie saves him from a suicide by Jasper, in which he decided he could not bear to die by his own hands and attempts to aggravate Jasper into killing him. No one but Jasper knows what he’s trying to do- and she’s more than willing to help to get her diamond back. This is why we enter with an ecstatic Connie, and why her mood drops so quickly. She’s trying to take him to the hospital. Steven’s slowly deciding that he’s no longer himself- he’s just a confused Rose Diamond, and the “old Steven” was a person he willingly killed himself, breaking his mental stability on purpose. He decides if Steven didn’t get to live, then none of his forms do, and he doesn’t want to allow “Juanita”, or Pink Quartz to continue to kill and abuse- he is worse than Juanita at this point, a mental and psychological abuser. He’s made everyone dependent on him and then abandoned them, so he’s going to stop that from ever happening again. ((Thanks for reading!))

his life has always been awful, if you watch "steven universe future: rewritten" (trust me it's worth it) and the rewatch steven universe you'll realize he's always had it pretty bad, from the gems not having faith in him to him having to make the ultimate sacrifice for the entire planet and even having to deal with a creep (AHEM kevin still made moves on him and connie after finding out they were kids)
i like the idea that this isn’t steven talking about someone who’s actually dead, he’s talking about the steven that we started the whole series with. he is talking about how that steven is completely gone and he is much different from that one.

Something happened that made steven corrupted and maybe the gems are in trouble that made him force fuse with connie(cause she didn't want to fuse because of his condition) to save them then connie got corrupted too then they started a rampage killing anyone who defies them.
Then the whole song could be like inside their minds with them talking to each other about what happened
Then because of the force fusion and steven being corrupted it influenced connie making her somewhat corrupted
Then steven finally saw some sense when he saw stevonnie kill a kid.
