  • Take a walk with our staff ecologist, Jim Scheff as he explores a section of the Daniel Boone National Forest that is currently experiencing invasive species take-over and mass erosion.
This footage is from the Stearns Ranger District in the Jellico area. The U.S. Forest Service is responsible for stewardship after large projects, but after being clearcut in the late 80's and early 90's, this area was all but abandoned and forgotten. Without a diverse and healthy spread of trees, the soil is loose and susceptible to slide. The invasive trees are now maturing and dropping seed, only furthering their abundance. If the forest service clearcuts more of this forest, we are sure to see the invasive Tree of Heaven and other invasives dominating the landscape. Clearcuts without stewardship lead to more destruction and require herbicide use in the future.
With the US Forest Service proposing nearly 5,000 acres of clearcut in the current "Jellico Vegetation Management Project", have they learned nothing from their meddling 30 years ago? Does this look like healthy forest management to you?
Yeah. It doesn't look healthy to us either.
