I just contacted the KY DNR. Is there any effort to try to limit the cutting to leave a buffer zone around this tree at a minimum? I hate to lose any of our KY National Champions. I have the champion Shingle Oak (Quercus Imbricaria) in my yard in Louisville and the champion Blue Ash (Fraxinus Quadrangulata) is only about 1/10th of a mile away from it.
Congrats on having the champion Shingle Oak. That is really cool!
I wonder if there are undiscovered species of moss, lichen or insects in the canopy of that tree. It's probably a rare little ecosystem up there. Very cool! The sounds of the forest are so relaxing.
Marvelous Tree! Thank you for spreading awareness to the threats facing these elder trees and forests. I notice the same blue slashes all over the Beaver Creek area of the Daniel Boone when I was last there.
at least they won't be disturbin nor compactin th soils at th base of Big Red while abusin its nayburs...you folks be watchful : what yallre involved with is dangerous & I'm not necessarily talking about climbing trees... ...god-speed. [ps : Beaver Creek "Wilderness Area" area?]
The US Forest Service should not allow logging on such steep slopes
Using a drone here is a genius idea! It's the only way we can "see" what is really at stake here and what the damage is. I am glad to donate toward the cost of replacing the drone!
Loggers need to due better alot of them destroy land leave the roads better than they were that's. Why people want let them on their land u make good loggers look bad put a real culbert in not a beach tree
What happened to select cut? This does not look like a good cut decision to me. Looks like they had permission to cut everything and should not have been like that, whos behind the decision to do this and did they have a connection with logging company?
From what I have read, nationally, the Forest Service gets less than 10% of its budget from timber sales but nearly half of their budget is given to them by congress based on them logging on public land. The forest service almost exclusively contracts logging companies when trees are being cut down. Logging companies make a bigger percentage of the U.S's GDP than oil and gas extraction companies so one might assume their donations have a lot of sway on congress especially with members that aren't as serious about environmental protections.
