    welcome back to another camshaft install video. This time around we get to see what's involved with installing a cam in a 2017 Chevy SS .
    I'd imagine it would be a similar procedure for a Pontiac G8 but it was fairly easy. If your also curious how to install valve springs I'll link another video along with adding it at the end of this video.

    Dude.. you have no idea how helpful this video is!! I have a 2015 chevy ss. I bought a COMP cam and lifter set literally 4 days after I bought my SS, and I've literally been waiting on a video like this for 4 years!! Lol. I figured a cam swap wouldn't be dreadfully hard, but I just didn't know for sure how confident I'd be doing it myself!! But now, February 15th, 2019, I'm going to my garage right after I post this comment, and starting the whole swap!! I'll post a video afterwards, and send it to you!

    So you need to spin the old cam prior to adding the wood dowel rods. This is done to keep the lifters up in the trays to pull the cam out so they don't fall into the oil pan. On older LS engines, it's best to be very careful not to jar the engine while pulling or installing the camshafts as the trays could be worn. I would also recommend even though the cam had been in some oil to use the correct cam lube so it's heavily coated. This prevents galling the cam on start up. That cam should be coated heavily especially if you are not priming the motor on start up. Good video tho on the process.

    Great job. I was always taught to take a piece of cardboard and poke the pushrods through in order. Keep the rockers and pushrods in the original positions since they wear in together. Maybe not so important on an engine thats barely broken in?

    • @BoBuilds
      @BoBuilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see how thats important, even more so on older engines where valve lash has to be adjusted down to the thousanths on individual rockers. On LS engines you torque to something like 23LBS and your good to go. I havent had issues yet.

    Good video - I'm taking a week to do my swap in my custom built LS7. Taking out a Mast Motorsports SS cam and replacing it with a Corvette Z06 cam. A little less lift (0.1" less), a little shorter duration (211/230 instead of 246/260) and a little more LSA (121 instead of 114). Smoother idle, 800rpm idle instead of 1000 and move the torque to a lower rpm. Maybe even a little better mileage.

They have a very low lift of like .500 but a healthy duration. These cams are basically for people that just want the sound of a big cam because it doesn't perform very well with it's low lift

    Have been debating on doing it my self, the whole rod/sticks being inserted confused me. Never installed a cam before. Why is that done again?

    • @BoBuilds
      @BoBuilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The rods are inserted to prevent the lifters from falling, unlike older generation engines the lifters are under the cylinder heads, not the intake manifold. Inserting rods is the easiest way to keep the lifters in place while swapping cams other wise the heads would need to be removed.

    Thanks for the Video! Question, how long are the wooden dowels that you use to support the lifters? I have heard 30” ? Also, do you round off the ends of the dowels at all before insetting into the engine to hold the lifters. Thank you

      Nice job, avoided the AC line disconnect. Like the dowels. This could have taken much longer! We love the cam lope!

    Is there no cam break in on LS engines like older Chevy V8's? Like older Chevy V8's you were supposed to start up and run 1,800 rpms for 20 or 30 mins and then adjust valves and change oil. Roller engines different yeeh?

    • @BoBuilds
      @BoBuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These LS engines are so much easier being roller, having non adjustable rockers, and hydraulic lifters. There's no valve lash to worry about

      @maldenfoster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SS Man2003 as far as the tune yea you will need a new tune, the cam I run is the btr stage 3 kit that then head studs forged pistons saving for a turbo kit if you have a auto u may need to get a stall converter too

      If it’s a daily driver you want something that is closer to a 114 LSA for good drivability and idling. you also want the cam to match your style of intake manifold wether it’s a single or dual plain to match rpm power range.

    In the video you put the cam in for sound, for the older customer. Is that the cam linked to the video? Cause you said it’s milder, so you can leave the shock valve springs in it? I looked at the link and the cam was sold with the springs, so I’m just wondering what cam that was you put in to that man’s car because I want to do the exact same thing in the 5.3 I have. Or do you have any other recommendations for a cam that I could put into it so that I don’t have to get crazy and start replacing things.

    Hi, is the harmonic balancer installation straight forward? Just screw the bolt back in? Did you need to put some Rtv on the corners of the timing cover? Lastly, are the trans cooler lines easy to disconnect? Thanks, 5 hours is impressive.

    Damn that sounds nice, i got a 2014 same car and want something like that on my car. Im minor mechanic guy ,dont think i would do that but i always wondered how the cars sounded like that. Changing only the cam did it increase hp to the car or is it still at stock hp? Like i said i dont know much about engine power.

      I got about 85whp out of swapping a TSP bald eagle (stage 2) cam and some long tube headers on my 2010 Camaro SS with an LS3. Your results should be similar. Check it out.. .dyno results are at the end.

    Hi greasemonkey im a viewer from Australia and liked your video i had 2 question if you could help is it easy to put the cam shaft in as i hear some people talk about cam Bearing can be damaged easily also. Do u change the bottom timing chain gear if i have 170,000kms on the engine or just the upper timing gear and tensioner and chain ?
    Thanks Mate Nice SS

    • @BoBuilds
      @BoBuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 170kms the crank and cam gear should be fine. Inspect the teeth and make sure they are a plateau shape like /T\ and not worn to a point like /\ .
      As far as damaging the cam bearing, you just have to be careful when removing and installing the cam. The cam lobes can nick or scratch the bearing when removing and installing. Lube up the came and go slow and easy.
