The people with orchards in Eastern Washington, will bring out large barrels and keep a fire going all night long to keep the air warm around the fruit trees when they are blossoming and there is a cold snap. Long nights, but it is worth it.
Here in New Zealand I live on an organic kiwi fruit orchard. We burn bales of hay to keep the one or two frosts we get in for the fruit. It raises the temp by 1.5 degrees c I think? Its very very fun
@@sophiebarnes3711 yes! The diesel smudge pots left a gray diesel smoke over the valley and our white cat even turned gray! The pear orchards are mostly gone now, but the vineyards use sprinklers now. It's beautiful in New Zealand!❤️
The citrus farmers in Phoenix used to burn the smudge pots in the orange groves for the same reason back in the 1940’s - 80’s before they cut them all down and to build houses upon houses and everything else to go with them. Now it’s much warmer at night due to the “concrete jungle” 😢

Happy Birthday to your twins! 🎉 Btw, it may have taken Meg just a few minutes to put dinner together but don’t forget the hours and work it took to prep and can the beef, and make the mashed potatoes and the gravy that were leftover. They didn’t all appear by magic! 😊❤

Happy birthday to the twins!🥳 From the way forecasters talk, this cold spell is in no hurry to leave. I figured as much as we had unseasonably warm temps for the last month. All those little piglets are so cute. They look like little black puppies from a distance!

Hi Hollar Family. Happy Belated Birthday Young Hollar Men.Ben watching Meg make "her" shepherds Pie, then you say you preferred Tuna from a tin, got me jumping in to give you my husbands favorite meal. Have your potato base Meg, and when you are going to mash the spuds use a small amount of the tuna juice instead of milk. In the meantime boil,(for your family), at least6 eggs. I boil 6 eggs for 2 of us, so up to you the amount, when they are cooked and cold if you have an egg slicer it cuts the eggs into perfect rings.flake the tuna over the potatoes, then cover with egg slices. Make a white sauce, to bind slightly, not heaps. Then cover with more mashed potato. Either knobs of butter or grated cheese over the top . Cook for 30 minutes or until top starts to colour, at 350/180 deg . Dish up with an egg lifter. Hubby just said in the States you may call it by another name. You turn panckaes/lift eggs from pan. Sorry I have taken 10 minutes to try and compose this. I have Fibromyalgia and get what they call "brain fog". So I have had to call on my husband to help me. The Tuna and Potato Pie was my MIL's recipe and she never had amounts, just some of this ,this and this. So I have taught myself to cook by eye measurements , a bit like you Meg. I am not sure if you will get around to reading this Ben and Meg, but hopefully if you do and wish to try/adapt a Recipe from 2 Oldies from rural Australia. Love to you all.

Nice video guys. You are awesome for helping ladies with their gardens. NC has some great homesteaders. :) I have followed all of you for years. Nice to see you together helping Bri :)
Your soil is looking so good. It has improved a lot in the last year. The rocks are a blessing even if they don't look like it. Do the best you can with what you have and count your blessings. Tell the boys happy birthday.
Guys a simple fix for the spring frosts that we have had success with up here in the arctic north or NYS is an old sheet to protect the buds. Give it a try over night
Happy Birthday Tyler and Jack may your year be filled with adventures and much happiness. You are all growing up so fast, thanks for taking us on your journey.

The shepherd's pie looked delicious. I thought the same thing as Ben cheese would have been nice. I think the aroma brought your son out of his room😋 How old are your twins now? They sure have grown.😊
Your gardens are gonna be so magical this year! I am whacky for frozen peas and would put them all up in that hotdish. Hack: When I want just some frozen peas, I don't even cook them. Soak them in a bowl of your hottest tap water until they are green and juicy, then put them in anything from salads to stews - this way they don't get mushy.
they say it is 58 but the wind is just going through you. I have beef chunks, black beans, home-grown tomatoes and onions, and spicey peppers in this bowl and my dog seriously wants it. The cats here too.
Wow, lots of piglets! It's great that you'll be able to get your seed potatoes in! Wow, the twins have weird choices about their favorite foods for their birthday. I'm glad you got an easy meal to make out of that Meg! You're a great mom to have provided all of that for each of them! This year both my boys chose fettuccine alfredo but one has a birthday in November and the other in January. They each like different cakes that I bake them. That looks good! Thanks for this video Hollar family!
Happy belated birthday to the twins, hope it was a good one,and dinner looked delicious and the temperature here for tonight is 27,but at least its quite as the last two days here was nasty winds and mix precipitation/ blizzard conditions and all schools in are area were closed,so hopefully your not going to get any of that mess geeze,so take care everyone 👍😊...
Hope you are blessed with peaches this year, no frost on the blossoms. Oh Meg, store bought canned meat for me as a kid was something called Chuckwagon Dinner. I guess it was beef stew in a can. My mom left the family when I was 13 and my brother and I had to cook for our dad and that is what we served him. Mom was a fantastic cook but us kids had not learned how yet. Our dad made a salad with fried potatoes and boiled eggs on it, a dutch dish from his youth. We did not starve but oh the day he brought home an Italian lady to be his second wife we were overjoyed. Ben what we had to eat was like canned dog food but Meg's meal looks so tasty. Hugs
I live in Colorado and there are hundreds of orchards here in the valley. Our neighbor has lost peaches 2 years in row. It all depends where in valley how the winds are if trees get frosted. Many of them have huge fan powered by propane to blow when temperatures drop. I don’t know if you have evere heard of a town called Palisade but they ship all over the country.
Try growing Italian flat beans a climber but also call "sugar bean" very juicy sweet prolific bean bean growing it for over 20 years and my preferred bean
Put burn barrels near your peach trees and burn in them to keep the frost at bay. The smoke in the air around them will keep the temp from dropping around them. That is what they do in the UK with apple trees.
From an old farmer over 70 and been gardening just like your little Buggie...bush green beans are the only way to go. I do not not climbing beans, they never do as good or have the flavor of bush beans! Good for you.
Omg...buggy is so adorable!!! So I have two shirt ideas...if u don't already have them 1. Good afternoon beautiful people 1. And love at the end when Meg says BYE!!!
Ben, convert the pig shelter into a version of a farrowing crate by attaching some 2x4’s horizontally around the inside perimeter of the shelter just high enough for the piglets to escape under while the sow lays down.
We live in Eastern Washington where we have the same problems with blooming fruit trees and then it gets real cold again. We put the "older" christmas tree lights on the trees. The ones with real light blubs. One string per tree, kind of in the bottom third of the tree as heat rises. Just turn them on when it gets cold. It's usually just enough heat to help protect those new blooms and until the freezing time is over. Been doing this for 25 years and it does help. Get them often in thrift stores & yard sales because they don't sell them new any more.
Ben, Billy @ PermaPastures did an episode where he laid out retired lengths of guard rail across sections of his driveway to divert water. Maybe it would work for you. Happy birthday boys! You are both becoming great young men!
here in the Netherlands people with orchards usually mist their blossoms with water whenever there's a late freeze. The water creates a protective layer of ice around the bloom. It's counterintuitive, I know, but supposedly it does work
As a suggestion try the "shepherds pie" the other way up. So meat, gravy and optional veg (peas, sweetcorn and the like, small veg) then cover with the mash potato. Throw it in the oven until the potatoes are golden brown, you can even sprinkle some cheese on top. I think you might enjoy it this way. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Ben for the tater bed prep video...looks mighty rich! Happy birthday to Tyler and Jack...and just sayin'.. great "taste" on the meal requests, and. kudos Meg, for makin' 'em proud and full! Love the piglets...sorry you lost one! Ya'll stay warm and safe 'till we Hollar again!?!...👀👍🤣😂🙂😂🙂🙃🙂🌄🌞🎯💯
If you have a sheet, mattress pad or light blanket or even row cover / agribond you can put over the peach trees and secure at the trunk at night it may help keep the blooms from freezing. Worth a try.
LSU developed two newish varieties of peaches that I've noticed are popping up at the bigger nurseries all over the south. The La Festival is one and it bloomed during the false spring, but the La Feliciana is the other one and it had some bud swelling, but only a couple actually flowered. I think the late blooming La Feliciana might end up being a good variety for zones 7-8 where we're more prone to cold snaps than zones 9 & 10. Both varieties were developed at LSU's Idlewild facility about 10 miles from my house in zone 8b.
BEN,. You are correct. It is Wednesday. You filmed it on Tuesday and we saw just now. Time change effects all of us, Please WORLD keep the same time all year round. Happy Birthday twins Happy Birthday. GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU . I love WATCHING ALL your family VLOGS. Thank you very much. The boys picked out the PERFECT BIRTHDAY MEAL. Gotta love it❗👍🤟🌻👍🤟🤟👍. See you next time. CHOW FROM S E MICHIGAN.
My peach tree bloomed (Anderson, SC) and is leafed out. BUT...always a "but", all of my fig trees were butned with frost. Same thing last year, but they did survive. Hopefully they will live. 🌿🍀🌾
Keep a good eye on your sows. Sometimes one will be more amenable to nursing and the piglets all go to her and she'll get more run down. Congrat's on the new litters. It's good when a working farm works.
Something special for Meg - left over mashed potatoes 3 cups - 1 cup farina - 1 egg - salt - a little flour (enough to allow forming baseball sized balls) - boil for 30 minutes in rolling boil - you got yourself dumplings - with gravy and a pork roast you will be in heaven
P.S. if you have any raggedy sheets or blankets, you can toss them over your peach trees for a little insulation from frost. I hope all your yard food is safe! ✌️💖🙏
I live in Asheville and am so sick and tired of the wind this year! But I consider ourselves fortunate when I see the weather in the rest of the country.
Hey Ben good evening, please pass on a happy birthday to Tyler and Jack. It’s great being a twin I know from personal experience I’m on my self. Please reach out if you need further information regarding its location…! Your friends from south-west Ohio, God bless
When I come and visit my first husband who passed away his family farm outside Leavenworth Kansas his mom would bring out the canned meat and OMG it was the best thing I’ve ever eaten besides her homemade bread but all the kids still at home enjoyed my version of mashed potatoes more.

Put some pig rails in your pig house to help prevent the suffocating of the piglets , it works .
Time change effects all of us,
Please WORLD keep the same time all year round. Happy Birthday twins Happy
Birthday. GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU .
I love WATCHING ALL your family VLOGS. Thank you very much.
The boys picked out the PERFECT BIRTHDAY MEAL. Gotta love it❗👍🤟🌻👍🤟🤟👍. See you next time.
CHOW FROM S E MICHIGAN.
This year has hit me the hardest when it comes to the time change.
My peach tree bloomed (Anderson, SC) and is leafed out. BUT...always a "but", all of my fig trees were butned with frost. Same thing last year, but they did survive. Hopefully they will live.
🌿🍀🌾
Duncan SC - fear my peaches are kaput !
Alright! If you can't sit down and be quiet, go back outside because The Hollars are on! Go!
✌️💖🙏🇺🇲🇮🇱✝️☮️
P.S. if you have any raggedy sheets or blankets, you can toss them over your peach trees for a little insulation from frost.
I hope all your yard food is safe! ✌️💖🙏
I live in Asheville and am so sick and tired of the wind this year! But I consider ourselves fortunate when I see the weather in the rest of the country.
Just wanna be friends with Meg lol 😂 just so I can maybe get in on all that food she always cooks looks amazing
🥬🥔🍀 Happy St Patrick’s Day Friday!
Happy Birthday to your wonderful twin boys. May their new turn around the sun be a blessed and happy one 💛🍀💛
Hey Ben good evening, please pass on a happy birthday to Tyler and Jack. It’s great being a twin I know from personal experience I’m on my self.
As for your soil amendments, I did a little digging and found this gentleman has opened up another store front under the name BLOSSOM Organic Garden Store and BLOSSOM Consulting Services in the same location.
Please reach out if you need further
information regarding its location…!
Your friends from south-west Ohio, God bless
Happy Belated Birthday to your twins!
You do whatever you can do. Alittle each day keeps you headed in the right direction.
When I come and visit my first husband who passed away his family farm outside Leavenworth Kansas his mom would bring out the canned meat and OMG it was the best thing I’ve ever eaten besides her homemade bread but all the kids still at home enjoyed my version of mashed potatoes more.
That was so cute when buggy stayed dancing at the table. As always Meg's cooking makes me hungry😂, congratulations on your new piggies.
You all are great people! I like your videos! My daughter likes watching you allso.
