    THE 4 CORE CAT VACCINES:
The 4 core vaccines to protect cats against feline viruses in the environment are:
    1. Feline Herpes Virus-1 or Feline rhinotracheitis
    a. Which causes an upper respiratory infections and ocular conjunctiviris. Most cats recover however some cats can have more flare ups than other. Vaccinating reduces the severity of the virus.
    2. Feline Calici Virus
    a. Which also causes an upper respiratory infection but has pathognomonic oral lesions in cats. Most cats recover from a Calici virus infection, but rare strains are deadly. Vaccinating reduces the severity of this virus.
    3. Feline Panleukopenia or known as Feline Distemper Virus
    a. Which is similar to canine parvovirus, and infects and kills rapidly dividing cells such as cells in the intestines, bone marrow, and skin, leaving cats fataly ill. Efficacy of FPV vaccines approach 99% protective.
    4. Rabies virus
    a. The rabies vaccine is required by law and should be given every 1 to 3 years once your cat turns 3 to 4 months old.
    b. Rabies acts by attacking the central nervous system (CNS), spreading through the nervous system until it reaches the brain and infected animals experience paralysis, mania, respiratory depression and death. Again, while no vaccine is completely protective the rabies vaccines are extremely successful at protecting cats against infection.
And I am adding a 5th vaccine to my core list which is:
    5. Feline Leukemia Virus vaccine is not considered a core vaccine, however, here in florida where we have a large feral and stray population and out/door in-door cats, I always recommend this vaccine to my clients cats and it is given to our Trap, neter and release cats.
The 3 in 1 shot is called - FVCRP -which has Feline herpes virus, feline calici virus and panleukopenia virus.
FVCRP - RIGHT FRONT LOWER LIMB
RABIES - RIGHT HIND LOWER LIMB
Feline Leukemia - LEFT FRONT LOWER LIMB
The reason we give cats vaccines as far away from their spine and lumbar region and on their distal limbs is to be able to save them if they develop a vaccine induced Sarcoma. This is an aggressive tumor that extends to surrounding tissue and is often malignant spreading to distant sites. These sarcomas can happen in 1 out of 30,000 cats. And if it does occur, the main treatment for a successful prognosis is limb amputation. If the sarcoma is along their spine or trunk of body where amputation cant be performed chemotherapy and radiation can prolong their life 18 to 24 months.
Other more common issues with cat vaccines is allergic reactions which can be mild to severe allergic reactions. Mild where they stop eating and seem lethargic for a day or two, to severe collapse, anaphylaxis and even death.
If you notice your cat is not doing well after their vaccines bring them to your local veterinarian for assistance. They most likely will give them an anti-histamine or steroid injection to treat an allergic reaction.

What if you are giving vaccinations at home and have the four-in-one combo that includes the felv? Where should that be injected?

Boy was I wrong. When I started rescuing cats in 1981 my veterinarian said give the Felv and 3 in 1 vaccine in the back of the neck where the spine is. And to mix the two vaccines together before you give them in one shot. I'm glad I've got this video because I have 40 cats to vaccinate.

Hey. How long is the fvcrp vaccine effective after being drawn. My cat was running around so it took about 10-15 mins to vaccinate him. The vet held the injection in his hand for 10-15 mins befor administering it. Will it be effective in room temp for that long?

Can the rabies vaccine be given at any age of the cat ? Or even after it is already infected with rabies ? How many doses of rabies vaccine at what intervals should be given ?

I think the first vaccine is given at four months but it may be 6 months and then it should be an annual vaccine. It cannot be given after exposure, it is prevention not post care.
