  • It's time to make amends.
In the past on this channel, when I have spoken about the Red Hot Chili Peppers I ruffled some feathers and received some backlash from the RHCP fans. Today, I'm going to try and say some nice things about a song that I think most people quite enjoy, it's "Give It Away". Are you a fan?

The "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" album blew my mind as a teen. I understand that it's not everybody's cup of tea but they did some very melodic, zeppelin-esque moments on that album. Breaking the Girl, I Could've Lied, The Greeting Song, Sir Psycho Sexy. Apache Rose Peacock, My Lovely Man.. So many cool bridge sections those songs. You can't just skip around on that album. You have to listen to in from top to bottom at least once to appreciate it.

an old video of John playing at 17 years old recently came out. In a totally Van Halen/ Steve Vai style. At that age, John knew all the tricks on the guitar. gifted musician
Admirable that what for many that is already a goal, John preferred to expand and fit what the band needs.

    • @jeremysmetana8583
      @jeremysmetana8583 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Partly that. People change, they pursue what they might later feel is their true calling. But don't underestimate the demands of the time and place. A lot of the players who are known as primarily alternative musicians were shred kings shortly before the rise of Alt between 1988/89 - 1990 and the dominance of Grunge after 1991. They changed because that's where the money went. Rivers Cuomo (Weazer) is on the record in interviews, basically saying that he and a mess of other players had spent their entire youths gaining serious chops and shred ability, only to have to chuck it all and "pretend to suck" after 1991, just to get a record deal.

Lots of people tried and failed to be Vai. Far easier and more realistic to try to be Jimmy.
Vai can do singer lead bands btw, be has been in several, where he "expanded and fitted what the band needs".
Alcatraz, Dave Lee Roth, Zappa, Whitesnake.. the Vai band...with Devin Townsend singing and many many more guest appearances on Ozzy, PIL, Alice Cooper records.
      He isn't just an instrumentalist.

I love this part in the funky monks documentary. You see Rick Rubin getting Flea to strip back the bassline and hold back on fills to refine it to what it is on the final recording. You can see how he words as a producer and the difference it makes.

    • @siliconscally7394

I feel like Rick is something like an inside representative for all the music fans out there. The listeners. Rather than considering what to play, like a musician would, he seemed to look at what a song should do, the feeling and the effect. I think this is why he is often the producer on albums that seem to connect with audiences on a massive scale. His insight as a music lover is there to inform the process of the creators.

Thank you for pointing out the Nina Hagen - Anthony Kiedis connection. I did not know about this.
Nina is indeed german. To be precise, she grew up in former East Germany, where she had her first hit "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen, mein Michael" (Michael, you forgot to bring the color film). This was not punk at all, rather a kind of novelty song. Basically it is about her beeing annoyed that her vacation is perfect with sunny days in a beautiful landscape and she can't take pictures because her partner left the color films at home.
Obviously there was no digital photography back then, and if you ran out of film or failed to bring it with you in the first place, you couldn't take pictures. Those were the times when you thought twice if a certain shot was worth on of the 36 pictures you had on one of your limited number of cartridges (maximum). Feels like ages ago, and yet just 25 - 30 years have passed.

I think frusciante explained it best in an interview or something, where he said that keidis needs like a loop or a riff to sing along to and his playing is meant to compliment the vocals mostly, that's how the band operated, and he also said something about how the theatrics up and down the fretboard don't mean shit if the song sounds awful, maybe that's why his playing on the records sounds simplistic and thats what Justin is refering to as expressionless ? Idk honestly I loved frusciante cause he's like a ringo starr, if you don't know who he is and you happen to listen to his song, at first glance you think ah well that's easy, and then you try to replicate it and you just can't quite get it right. That to me is a very unique talent, and his solo work is also really nice and mellow. One of the greatest to ever do it ? I don't know but it doesnt matter as long as it sounds as good as it does

A funny thing happened to me: I was already a Darkness fan before hearing any song! That's because I discovered your TH-cam channel not long ago and I really really like it. Very interesting content, you are a very funny and clever guy. Afterwards I´ve been listening the band and it is full of amazing stuff: some early ACDC great riffs, your voice reminds me to The Shins singer James Mercer (which I love) plus some gorgeous falsettos, the power of the Supersuckers in your live performances, and the glorious 70's glam style. My mind just blown away!! Please keep going with the music and the channel.

Justin is an excellent content creator who possesses outstanding musical knowledge. It's almost always a pleasure to hear him talk about something I think we all love - music. These things being said, no matter how defensive he gets about the darkness being perceived as a flash in the pan throwback joke band, he seems to find it hard to grasp the LA skateboard scene of the early 80's that rhcp organically sprang from and have done very well for themselves, since. Not bad for a band that had no aspiration past one gig! I've never heard Justin co-ordinate and interact with other instruments in the band the way JF does, and while many would argue the former was always plodding well worn paths in a contrived way, the latter was always the more innovative guitarist, genuinely pushing things forward for the instrument. Again, I cant say enough that I genuinely respect the knowledge, analysis and ability to discuss music Justin has, but I sometimes feel he wishes the darkness had the longevity and legacy of the rhcp.

Great video as always Justin. I am a big RHCP fan (tattoo and all) and I love all their music, but I totally understand people who don't. RHCP is hard to define, is it rock? is it punk? is it pop? is it funk? Actually they are a bit of everything and they have gone through many phases, which is normal for a band with 40+ years of existence. Anthony Kiedis is not a great singer, however, he is perfect for the band. He's great a what he does and how he does it. Flea and Chad are some of the best at their instruments and very well respected and John Frusciante, particularly for me is my favorite artist. He adds so much to the band, and when you see him live you can see how involved and passional he is when he plays. The four of them are great at what they do. It's true that Californication was their peak and everything after has been gradually losing power, with the exception of the last album that I think is amazing, but again they are a 40+ years band, it's surprising that they are still hungry for more. Also, I went to see them last year, first time I saw them with John and it's one of the best concerts I have ever been. They played like they were in their 20s. and they are all over 55!

People always say that John Frusciante and his band mates are best experienced live. I’ve never heard them live, but I have seen recordings of them playing live - and it just seems very different. Perhaps you should compare their live performances with the recordings? Maybe you’ll hear more of the color you’re looking for that you’re not hearing in the produced versions? I’ve seen them live. It was pretty good. Some recordings can capture a band live fairly well, but I’ve been to live shows that you just can’t recreate watching on a recording. It depends on the venue, acoustics and how close you are to the front (good luck at a Chili Peppers gig getting anywhere close to the front). It’s really hard to appreciate. I’m sure Justin knows from playing live and being at shows through his career. The one thing I’ve noticed in particular is that certain songs just make more sense when you see them live, that listening to the released album don’t make sense or leave you feeling flat, but blow you away live. That’s the best bit, discovering how the artist intended you to experience the song.
