    I lost my husband to cancer 7 1/2 years ago, and quickly realized after he became sick that the American Cancer Society doesn't actually do much for cancer patients. They raise a lot of money for "research", but not much for actual cancer patients. Sadly, this is why I never participate in Relay for Life, though I would love to honor him and other loved ones who have been lost to cancer in such a way. I do love St. Jude's for that reason since they do so much for the families of children who are going through this terrible disease.

    • @hubrisnaut
      @hubrisnaut ปีที่แล้ว +10

      St. Jude's is the first charity I think about when I want to give to charity. I literally come to tears when I am alone and think about those suffering innocent children.

    • @melindarodriguez8353
      @melindarodriguez8353 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@hubrisnaut Yes, it's such a horrible disease, and that they provide treatment at no charge takes such a huge burden off of the family. It's such a worthy charity. From what I remember, the American Cancer Society would help with a little gas money if you have to travel for doctor's appts, and maybe provide a few nights in a hotel. It's staggering how expensive cancer treatment costs, so it's very frustrating that the biggest, well-known, non-profit takes in so much money without providing much financial support to those who need the help. It's eye-opening when you find yourself in the middle of it.

    • @stormystrikes
      @stormystrikes ปีที่แล้ว

      Most charities are a scam, unfortunately. For $20 a month you can feed 3 children in Sudan. By the time they pay for the ad fees, the corporate employee's
      salaries, worker's wages, costs of supplies and overall costs of running a business, you can't feed 1 child in Sudan.

      Absolutely right, I give to St Jude , Shrines, Tunnel to Towers, and Samaritans Purse. I know for a fact that these Organizations help people and families directly.
      The Shriners took care of my daughter until she was 18. Complete reconstruction of both her feet, they payed for everything , room and board for her Mama also. I had to keep working to pay bills and she took care of our daughter.

    • @Rae_777
      @Rae_777 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What? Curing cancer would help actual patients an awful lot. Research-based treatments available in hospitals have saved, prolonged life, and increased comfort for millions and millions of human beings. St. Jude only exists to provide free research-based care BECAUSE of all the people who donated to the ACA to create the care St. Jude uses.

    I have a cousin who is just like this. When I phoned her brother to ask if she really had a blood cancer and had only 6 months to live I apologised for checking it with him to verify it. He said "don't worry, this isn't the first time she's been dying". A complete liar.

      Yes. We have all lied, right? Besides telling white lies as adults, we have, as children, told real and bold lies. The language distances the liar from the thing that has happened. It's passive language; something happened, but we have no one to blame. It came out of thin air, apparently. Crazy, right? 😂

      @@sasprilla5Yes. Now, people all have what are narcissistic tendencies from like a 0-10, but she might truly have a mental illness because she is so charming and also so blatant in her actions. She obviously needed a ton of attention as well.
      I don't know how much we in the public are entitled to know (nothing is my guess), but I'm interested in learning what her childhood was like. Shamanda might write a memoir, but 1) I don't want her to earn another cent off of her lies and
      2) I wouldn't trust a word she said, so that would be useless to me.

      And the idea that you can be the one behind raising money and self-advocating and posting is also so far-fetched. Cancer treatment is also about palliative care long before it might be JUST about palliative.
      Like, if a tumor is pushing on nerves, it can be incredibly painful. You might get nerve pain or muscle spasms and need medication for that. Those meds will make you so sleepy and affect your thinking. A lot of them cause dry mouth. How can you post vlogs/blogs plus manage your disease (Amanda seemed really on top of things) if you are in chemo plus these other drugs?
      Speaking from experience (I have benign tumors that "act like" cancer), sometimes I cannot speak for the pain, and other times the meds make my fingers sort of twitch (esp near bedtime) and I sort of forcefully spin my phone into the air, 😂! I also fall asleep. I still tutor a bit and it took me three hours to write my student's report and look for links for her and I did NOT complete the last. Instead, I fell asleep on my toothpaste (for unrelated reasons I am in a hospital bed right now) and woke up with a dead phone and toothpaste on my back and sheets.
      How can a hot mess like me post like this AND look pretty AND handle that travel?
      Gross that she got free trips to NYC from CALIFORNIA and went to see shows.
      Can you imagine going out to a crowded place and being in a theater with that pounding noise and bright lights after a treatment? I have received cell treatments and they really didn't make me feel any different, but it was exhausting just going to the hospital and getting the IV (I am a tough poke) and having to wait for two hours for the vitals checks bc it was a clinical trial originally allowed for me by compassionate care bc there is not cure for my tumors.
      It wasn't a big deal for me, BUT, Amanda was saying she had stage 4 lymphoma. I imagine that that would be very painful and exhausting? It sounds awful!
      But she is having a whirlwind of Make-a-Wish trips funded by kind-hearted fellow worshipers from her mega church.
      She is the worst 🤮.

I really like that Megyn does other things too. Don't get me wrong her deep dives on political news is some of the best out there. But her true crime stuff is tops too. Another great guest. You can tell how deep she went into the story by how she talks about the parts of the case. Seems to have taken a toll. She seems like a great reporter. She and megyn gel magnificently. Sometimes you can't beat reporter to reporter telling a story. Megyn is one of the best interviewers around. Great show. Wonderful welcomed distraction.😊

    I have studied narcissism extensively. I was married to a sociopathic narcissist and was determined to figure out why they say and do the things they do. Psychiatrists admit that it's almost impossible to treat these narcissists. Because they will tell you what you want to hear, thus you can't work with them. They are that good at fooling people. They fully take advantage of genuinely honest people. I believe narcissists absolutely believe their own lies. I am convinced they have a mental illness. I've come to that conclusion with my research and many doctors conclude too, that sociopathic narcissism is incurable. Amanda will go right back to what she knows how to do. The judges sentence wasn't long enough.

    My daughters monster in law pulled a similar stunt she started claiming to her children and friends that she had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and went as far as calling her grown children together to plan out her funeral even going so far as to discuss with them exactly what she what wanted to be buried in as as they are crying and struggling to come to terms with the fact that not only was their Mother going to die but she was going to die in her early 50’s and all this was drug out for weeks and then she calls them together again then she starts laughing and told them it was all a joke. I was just like who does that??? My own Mother had died from Breast cancer and I think anyone who lies jokes or swindles others in any manner much less faking cancer should really have to suffer and die of the same fate. Cancer is a horrific diagnosis to receive and it is no joke and to scam people by using something like that might cause a person not to want to donate the next time to someone who really needs it…

So, I’m not surprised that Amanda could appear to be a cancer patient when she was not.

    This fake illness scenario is quite common. I’ve seen it a few times. One lady I knew tricked her siblings, her children, her church group, etc. She shaved her head, faked prescriptions, faked doctor appointments, even had people drop her off for what she said was chemotherapy treatments. It was incredibly Oscar worthy. She was seeking attention and a bizarre type of sympathy. Sadly, she died of a rare cancer a few years later. Big funeral attendance - she was known to be a great friend and person. Smh. She fooled them all.

    My mom actually had Hodgkin’s lymphoma & was diagnosed at stage 3 but went into stage 4 before she started treatment. I also had a friend in high school that had the same cancer as well… Thank god they are both cancer free today but seeing what the person , as well as their family goes through…I don’t wish it upon my worst enemy & the fact the anyone lies about cancer & it’s somewhat of a societal ‘thing’ is so disturbing & is just a reflection of an overall view of the deep rooted sickness in society today as a whole on many levels that only seems to be getting worse.

    I'm so angry I am shaking. I lost my husband of nearly 30 years to cancer in April 2022. He was only 59. We were celebrating the impending birth of our fourth grandson one minute, and sitting in front of a doctor telling us he had cancer the next. We went from diagnosis to death in two-and-a-half months. It devastated our entire family and community of friends. I cannot fathom anyone playing with this diagnosis as a fantasy or sympathy bid. The best thing that could happen to her in my opinion is for her wish to come true. When I think of all the deserving people and families who could have used the support and donations that she STOLE from them I could scream. This woman is utterly despicable, and she deserves a lobotomy so she never does this again.

    I’m so glad to finally vent a story very similar to this. We were living in Maine in the early 90’s. We were in our 30 s and we had some friends in Brunswick, Maine that were in their earlyish 60s. They belonged to a church group and they knew this gal that was our age that they knew for a few years. I can’t remember her name even though she was such a violator. Anyway, my friend Alyce gets me involved with this friend of hers because she’s a “real introvert” and more your age and she has cancer……had the whole chemo port and everything. Long story short, she had been embezzling for the Maine forest service where she worked, conned all the nice church folks out of money and lots of my time and effort…….the forest service didn’t prosecute her for some unknown reason because it was like $200,000 plus from them and that was because she high tailed it to Alaska. I asked my friend Alyce “arent you pissed that we were conned like that?” And she said “well, she probably needs our sympathy and prayers now more than ever”. I was young and dumb enough to buy her answer but NOW that I’m older it was a lot for Alyce to involve ME because it was a lot of time on my part when I didn’t really have time and money at that age PLUS….my friend Alyce was a multi millionaire that could afford being out a few hundred bucks. I’ve always actually always been more disappointed in my friend Alyce who roped me in.

    I found it hard to accept that people were so unsupportive of Alita. In her shoes I would be very bitter for the way I was treated and the time I lost with my daughter due to that hideous liar. I’d have wanted to knock Amanda out every time she used the term ‘bonus daughter’. I can’t believe Amanda’s supporters were so naive for so long. Fair enough at first, but there were so many red flags the longer it went on. For a start, how could anyone supposedly going through so many treatments remain looking so fresh and healthy? The continuing revenue raising alone over several years would have made me suspicious. I know that I would have voiced my doubts and most likely created enemies, whereas so many people in this story said nothing, even when they were suspicious. Church people must be very easy to dupe, that’s all I can say, especially the people in this story who still believe her despite her being found guilty and even admitting her guilt. Don’t they ask themselves if she was terminally ill, how is she still alive? Thank goodness Nancy smelt a rat and tenaciously pursued the truth. There were lots of times when I was listening to this podcast that I was reminded of Meghan Markle. Her constant lying, her ‘charming’ but ruthless pursuit of what she wanted and her nastiness to anyone who wasn’t useful to her were all the traits of a narcissist. Anyway, this is a fascinating story that serves as a warning to be on your guard for con artists.

    As a cancer survivor myself it infuriates me to think that someone would lie about having this insidious disease! I was diagnosed with stage 2 Renal Carcinoma in the beginning of the pandemic. After being told multiple times that the tumor was not growing and was still in the early stages they sent me home and booked a CT scan for 3 months ... it had grown double it's original size. I was sent home again with the same crap story and come back in 2 months this time. It had grown again. He started to say come back and I stopped him and asked for a new surgeon because I was in a lot of discomfort when I peed or bent over, plus I had lost 65 pounds in those 5 months. I remember the surgeon saying how great I looked since losing weight. I said I have fuc*ing cancer and I want to see someone who actually gives a shit if I live or die. He said there are no other surgeons and not one bed due to covid patients taking them all. He told me if I did not calm down he would call the police and have me removed from the hospital. I said fine! I'll be calling the local news as well to let them know my situation. I finally got a new surgeon who did a biopsy, MRI and another CT scan. I was in surgery 2 days later getting my right kidney removed. He said if I had not advocated for myself I would not be here. So how any person could lie about cancer and all the stress and anxiety and fear that comes with it baffles my mind. I don't wish this disease upon anyone ... but I truly hope this woman gets what she deserves!

    Legislating folks giving 20 or 50 bucks cash to someone is seriously dangerous territory. Let's keep the government out of civil matters here in the US. I'm sorry the UK feels the need to legislate and enforce people on a micro management fashion, but it's not surprising.

      I think it was author Amity Schlaes who pointed out in a book illustrating how the federal government made the Great Depression worse. In one chapter FDR wanted to provide funding to The Red Cross and they refused saying that regular people's contributions would drop off if they realized the government was funding the charity.
      Legislating charity doesn't work.

    These kinds of things upset me so much. I actually had non Hodgkin’s in 2010-2011. I only had to have 3 chemo treatments and 4 weeks of radiation then surgery. It was a really hard time for about 6 months or so. Coincidentally, my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer a month before me. We actually sat in chemo chairs next to each other one time. Some of my friends had some meals made for my family but I received NO other help. I had small children and my husband stepped up in a big way. I lost over 6 months income and it was a struggle that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy but it helped to build character in me. I am completely cured (so is my mom) but I still have the scar on my chest from my port to remind me.

    So many people have lost loved ones to cancer, or have survived cancer that their hearts are very open to helping other cancer patients. Even if there is a legitimate diagnosis, when these patients find out Friends, neighbors, and church members are more than willing to help With money, babysitting, and chores there is a “certain type of person” that will take advantage of that. Not that it’s wrong to accept help but often times they accept help when it is not legitimate.

    I did once have chemical burns when once at a duty station with no idea what I may have come into contact with and I was later told by others that I made it up because thanks to immediate care on base I was put on light duty and it virtually disappeared after three days excepting some discoloration that lasted longer. So when I returned to home station I was ridiculed and chastised because of no communication for a while and told by family members that I was a liar and trying to get sympathy when in fact I was quite relieved and happy that medical personnel were immediately available at the relatively small duty station and it did not require trying to travel or be transported. But these things are not thought about by the bulk of the public anyway.

Eventually ending up with a catheter in which she introduced feces into her bladder through catheter, Was hospitalized with an IV. We found her in bathroom disconnecting her IV and letting herself bleed out through tubing so her bloodcount would be low. This was just prior to her going to surgery for exploratory gyn surgery. I've always wondered what became of her.

    When you said that we're not to the point of demanding a doctor's note for our employer to take off for a treatment, well that is EXACTLY what many employers demand because of people scamming the system. I've seen people abuse FMLA so bad that others later had trouble getting approval.
    Where I worked before, if you worked any day other than your scheduled day, it was OT regardless of the # of hours you worked, and Sunday was double time. One employee worked 4 day 10 hours a day schedule, got FMLA and never worked a single day they were scheduled for but worked the other 3 days. They got 50 hours pay for 30 hours work and only worked 3 days a week. After that 6 month period ran out it was next to impossible for anyone else to get approved.
