I'm studying Dilla's technique, trying to remake this beat..i've done a few others but this one is damn near impossible...It's a six bar loop, and on the original sample i can't figure out how he chopped it to make the first three bars of the loop...he didn't just lift the loop from the song, he chopped in some weird ass way to make it work with the drums..sheesh not to mention there is also what sounds like live acoustic bass and jazz guitar chords sitting pretty low in the mix but they fit perfect with the way Dill chopped it...audio heaven!
I have many times attempted to unlock his technique or stumbled across a sample that connected to him and left me paralysed mentally. All we know is what he used and how it sounds. It is simply impossible to recreate J Dilla music. His music is the perfect balance to your mind body and soul
+W.A.N.H wearenothuman Actually, he was known for making beats in 10-12 minutes. 12 minutes was when he was struggling to the chops or drums. Go watch Questlove's segment on Red Bull Music Academy when he talks about Dilla and the Little Brother beat for Mos Def and Talib Kweli

J Dilla, certainly one of the Masters of Music. Shortly after he passed away, I decided to visit James Yancey’s gravesite, and I when I arrived at the cemetery on that sunny afternoon, I said a prayer for him at his Tombstone... I’ve never visited someone’s grave like that, and I just sat there contemplating about all the contributions J Dilla made while he was still alive in this world with all his music that I love and appreciate. I’ll never forget that day I visited J Dilla’s grave, it made my appreciation and respect and admiration for J Dilla grow even more to where I find a connection with his spirit every time I hear his music being played. It also reminds me that there are music producers, and then there is J Dilla, who has that visionary ear to hear breaks in a song a certain way that no one else can execute or perform at his level. Only Music Producer that can come near J Dilla would be Madlib.
I think Chip Fu would be the only lyricist that could be on level with this ear-gasmic beauty. And that's saying something because Chip Fu isn't even in my top 5
Take my advice: Learn from Dilla to let the beat flow. Don't try to duplicate what he did bc it's damn near impossible and will mess up your psyche. I have often found myself listening to his stuff, get behind my MPC and can't make shit bc his stuff got in my head. Now, I just turn on the MPC and go...he created that feeling which will keep him as the best to ever touch an MPC
Puts a person into a hypnotizing, dream-like state to where he just wants to float away into the vast darkness of empty space. The Earth only being a reflection on the helmet that gets further away, yet there isn't the instinctual fear of this unknown that would naturally overwhelm a man while being alone in space. The man is strangely at peace with his entire life and end at that one moment. Slightly smiling as he remembers all the good times and that his end will only lead to a doorway into another form of reality to which he cannot comprehend. Never in my life have I heard a beat more beautiful and soothing than this one. Most likely never will.
if u don't understand the mastery it took to loop, filter, add bass and drum tracks to this song then you are probably not a beat maker and just a casual listener....6 bar loop son!
My favorite Dilla beat, just amazing. The concept, the instrumentation, the title all paint a beautiful metaphor. It's not about space itself, rather what space is to you and how it inevitably will make you feel.
Most of his beats just sound simple, that's the best part. Not too hard on the head at first glance, but you can zoom in on details like his swing or drum EQ and realize nothing sounds like Dilla. His music can be both easy and mindblowing to listen to, depending on how you choose to look at it.
George Mirchev thats whats up mane. Dilla's style is just the j-d style. Simplistic can be boggled, as well as complexity can. but D's on his own level. as every producer should be.
Logan Foster The thing is - I've been actively involved in music for about 18 years, I recognize all sorts of little details in Dilla's music, I have some knowledge that lets me identify and map stuff out in my head. But even to this day I play his tracks over and over and somehow I keep finding more... it's crazy... just like my dad said he does with The Beatles. The Beatles and Dilla are universal, you might as well be a three year old, you'll still enjoy them. They build around a simple foundation, even through a wall (or without much music knowledge) anyone can hear something about their music that clicks with them. They truly did it for everybody.
The thing I like the most about Dilla's beats are the atmosphere and setting. All his beats have a specific setting or environment that can go perfectly with them. Solid shit.
marcman07 I'm trying too hard.. being blazed out of my mind, telling the truth about how a song makes me feel while i'm high, in a place where literally nobody knows who I am, and john peoples isn't even my real name. You're real fucking smart huh?
It was this beat right that made me wanna start producing. Since then ive made countless beats of different styles and variations but this beat right here is the root of my journey. Thank you Dilla ❤️
Probably my favorite J Dilla joint. Ever. So peaceful, yet dope. Had a late night vibe to it. Something to chill to. Also sounds like an Adult Swim bump, might I add. Just amazing.

this shit got all the aliens in outer space bobbin their heads!
Its actually ridiculous how many beats Dilla made in his short life, such an inspiration.
He would always stay in his studio and make beats when he wasn’t doing anything else
And e v e r y .. s I n g l e ..b e a t .. holds up to this day 🔥🔥 straight fire

Hiram Clarke Beats it is a dangerous place but this beat puts you in such a crazy state of solitude like space does
This video always gives me chills. The combination with Dilla's soundtrack makes for a masterpiece.
this is fucking ridiculous. he's years ahead
Dilla's beats should be left as standalone instrumentals. No MC can touch the beat with the right precision, just kills the vibe.
you should listen to sun in my face with blu
Check out still slummin by lute, he did this beat justice in my opinion
In other words.....SHUT-UP!!
Indeed his beats should be considered sacred and kodesh(holy).
