There's a a romance minigamr in basically every final fantasy. It's just very minor and ultimately unimportant. But it's always there, at least ff6 onward.
I’ll challenge this video’s premise. FFXIII had great side characters that we followed and their stories played out during the game yet people hate it till this day. Explain.
The game sucked and the convoluted story interfered with getting to know the characters. The only character I remember liking was Sahz. He had a clear story with his son.
Exploration was too linear and combat wasn't fun enough to justify the mind numbing gameplay loop. The entire game was walk forward, combat, walk forward, combat, walk forward, combat, cutscene, repeat. And no, grand pulse post-game content didn't make up for it. FF13 did a great job with the growth of all its characters, but that's really it. Aside from maybe Jihl Naabat, the antagonists were terrible and uninteresting.
An old friend of mine once said that the biggest difference between a JRPG and WRPG is that JRPG is "We are going to tell you the story" and WRPG is "We are going to tell you A story, you fill in the details." Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Square Enix seems to have so much trouble striking the perfect balance that they once had during the PS1 era. FF12: The story is too dry and political. Severely lacking in terms of any kind of satisfying character development FF13: Great side characters and character growth but terribly linear gameplay and unappealing antagonists. FF15: Disjointed, meandering story with botched combat and an overall inconsistent direction. FF16: Fun combat, but too much focus on the main character. Not a very interesting world to explore or story to unravel. Most of the mandatory side quests felt like a slog to get through. FF7 Remake and Rebirth have been alright. I just wish they did a better job of incorporating the optional overworld stuff with the actual story. It's also kind of immersion breaking when you topple over all the furniture every time you walk into a building. There's no reason for that kind of physics to exist indoors when moving objects around accomplishes nothing.
Been going through the entire series since the pixel remasters. Gonna finish IX before years end so I can start on X. Thoroughly enjoying IX now as it’s in my top 3, but after nine games of text, I’m excited to get to X starting first of year. (Hope to get through X, XII, and XV in 2025. No mmo’s or XIII. XIII is unplayable bad IMO. I hate VIII as well, but still more playable than XIII!).
2:33 I don't think this is necessarily true. A big appeal with VII is the love triangle dating sim mechanic that logs your responses with Cloud throughout the game. It's precisely what you accuse Baldur's Gate of to the extent that the love triangle eclipses the entire plot for a lot of people. X and VII Rebirth carried this over. Who threw your Blitzball during Tidus' Overdrive? Yuna? Rikku? Lulu? VIII brings its fair share of romance/relationship optional things as well. Are you following Selphie's yearbook club entries throughout the game? Who's playing which instrument during the date scene? Wakka's bigotry is mandatory, but whether or not Tidus prays in Besaid is, which Crusader dies depends on a choice, Lulu's backstory is optional alongside a myriad of other things. Vivi's backstory and his relationship with Master Quan IS optional. In VII you can treat Tifa worse than the other love interests and get a completely different gondola scene. Laezel is specifically a romantic option for the MC, but that's just one side of what she is. I don't get it. Who would Cloud be without the other characters? Zack in Crisis Core apparently. People love that game and it has no party. I also think you're being incredibly unfair to BG3 and exposing your own bias. Romance memes are just that, memes. The majority of conversation I've seen surrounding these characters stems from their response to trauma. The fact that the game has more dialog than the entirety of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit combined via it's many optional paths somehow being a bad thing is just laughably stupid to me. XVI is exactly what you praise the other games for. Incredibly linear, minimal meaningful side content that has any impact on the main quest, side characters constantly praising the main character for being such a special boy. Cid has his own story to the extent that Clive becomes Cid at one point in the game. You only controlled one character when XV was originally released. Persona is a dating sim JRPG hybrid. It is the furthest thing from a CRPG like Fallout 1. We're just getting more ridiculous as time goes on.
None of those choices really change the story though, vivis story concerning life and death is always there, and always ends the same way, tidus always ends up with yuna, cloud always ends up with Tifa, etc
What the fuck are you talking about, bro. FF is not known for choice. You're reaching incredibly hard. Most players don't even realize there's a hidden gimmick path in X.
FF7 was legit the game of my childhood. It was beautiful, remember breaking into the Shinra tower and thinking, there is no way there is more to this game!! and then Wow, there was WAY MORE GAME lol. I loved that game so much. I need to play X again too. They are such good games, and I agree there is a difference in more than just combat with JRPGs. It is about the party, the community, the gang, the unit, or the bunch of misfits.
Even the developers do not understand that the first 9 or 10 FF werent actually so different. They were substantially the same recipe but also so different. But now its just different all the way for the sake of...whatever.
@AndyMeetsFantasy Then you probably should make a video on that opinion at some point, because it is by no means an universal one. Lots of people love XV for what it is in spite of its problems.
I agree with most of what you said (really do miss the ensemble cast vibe from FF6-10), but I don't think what you said about Persona is exactly right. While it's true that all of the social link/confidant stuff is optional, the characters in your party still have a big part to play in the main story and you see them develop. This is less true in 4 and 5 since their development is mostly limited to the single arc in which they're the focus, but it's more true in 3 where the characters are constantly bouncing off each other and developing from start to finish. I don't see a significant difference between, say, FFX's party and Persona 3's party when it comes to character dynamics and party cohesion. The social link stuff is mostly an additional way to explore their individual problems, but their interpersonal dynamics are explored plenty in the main plot.
I see your point! And I would agree that the difference isn't too major necessarily, however there are important subtleties, where I things like even the concept of a social link or alternate outcomes, do in fact feel very different - at the end of the day - from a story set in stone. That being said Persona is awesome :)
I loved the first chapter of XV. The intro to the group was fantastic. The rest of the game, though… Geez. Even worse, after reading up on the shitty story, the intent and story beats behind it actually sounded superinteresting.
The parties are critical to a Final Fantasy game 12 was where they began to lose their way I feel. Rebirth was a joy I feel bad hardly using Tifa and Cait Sith but Yuffie was never going to leave my party she's cute, Funny and so much fun to play. 7 and X are the gold standard for me there are so many fun memorable party members it adds a lot of charm to the experience. 16 really suffered from only having one playable character, It is fun and I like Clive and Joshua a lot but I found it hard to keep pushing to finish it. Those filler sections are a much bigger slog when I don't have characters like Yuffie, Barret, Aerith and Red to liven up the journey.
I feel the same way! 12 was indeed where it began going downhill, it's a great game in many ways, but it doesnt keep me engaged, really. 13 tried again though, but that cast of characters is one of my least liked in the franchise, perhaps only standing (admittedly shoulders) above FF15.
@AndyMeetsFantasy Yea Penelo is meant to be the Yuffie, Selphie, Rikku type but false completely flat. They're not main characters but they bring a charm and levity that balances out the seriousness of the main plot. Vaan is pretty awful he's the same archetype as Tidus but their charisma and depth are miles apart. I do like Ashe, Balthier and Basch but there's not enough character building to connect me more to them.
@@JaxieWorld This. We all have our own ways of playing and enjoying these big RPGs. A cool cast of party members increases the chances of there being one that you really like that hooks you into the game.

@AndyMeetsFantasy i do understand why people don't like 10-2, it's just a tone shift is too much, same thing i don't like 10,bc i played 10-2 first and didn't find depressing tone of 10 attractive. 10-2 appeared in the right time for me, and helped to get through those days i felt at my lowest. 10 didn't have same impact on me, but i do understand why people like it. It's just i prefer more light hearted games bc i have enough of difficult stuff in my life as it is i guess. But for people who played 10 first 10-2 sudden cheerfulness was a drawback, but honestly i can't imagine what did they expect, bc it's a natural course of things for the world that was struck with grief for so many years and finally got free from it to "behave" that way. People of Spira are just drunk with their freedom and feeling of safety, they're not stressed anymore. Ofc they gonna be a little crazy. So the way 10-2 is - seems pretty natural to me.
True. To me, the thing that mostly discribes a good Final Fantasy is: a great journey through a bunch of interesting places with your different party members that you find across the way. Just it.

Well to be fair- 7 story doesn’t get good till disc 2 (after Aerith death) and the game ended there, so I see why people not liking the story. It’s more of the characters why people love rebirth, because the character interaction is soo good.

Rebirth does fix it though- making Refus have more scenes, giving Turks for screen time, and the added lore in Cosmo canyon being connecting to main objective. Not to say it’s bad, but there’s lack of story in the beginning. That’s why people are confuse on the story of rebirth, because that part of the game nothing happens really, till the end.
One thing I want also is the game allowing to change the party leader. I want to roam around the world as Yuffie ! FFXIII was the only game to allow this
Great video. And yes Final Fantasy does story and characters so much better than Persona, Elden Scrolls, Witcher, Dragons Dogma etc. That's one of the best things about FF series. But it also helps that the music is so much better too.
Everything you say I agree with. I would not compliment ff16 though. I finished the game and had to skip almost every dialogue - at least all the side quests. It was just SO BAD. The battles were fun but there was no party synergies. Half of the time I didn’t know who was with me until I saw an ice animation and was like “oh Jill’s there!” 😂
...if you pick the right options. If you ignore Rinoa the whole time then the party dynamic is disjointed and railroady. Which is part of the problem described here - why are there choices that kind of matter if all that they do is make the plot worse?
I don't think the party's chemistry in FF8 was anywhere as strong as 10, 9 and 7. Outside of a select few; you could erase several members from the main party and the story wouldn't change. However, FF 8 does share similarities story beats between 16; as well as a similar consumable/draw magic system used in 15. Its strength lies in how it weaves the two separate stories of Squall and Laguna.
FFVII has the Golden Saucer date scene which varies depending on your actions in the game (Between... Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, and Barret, I believe). But as a side story, not as something that impacted the narrative. But I think it's telling for how rich and important the ensemble used to be compared to the protagonist that we used to get debates as to who the 'real' protagonist of a FF game's story was, divorced from who the main perspective character was - Not something I've really seen since FFXII. From memory, with FFX the consensus tended to be Yuna as the true main character, FFIX the consensus was usually Garnet, and Rinoa for FFVIII.).
In terms of the Golden Saucer, you're technically right which is the most important kind, but you were never told about the relationship system, and it only really applied to this one scene, which had little to no impact on the rest of the game - and everyone were much more likely to get Tifa I believe, since she is a popular character who's natural to use in battle.
@@AndyMeetsFantasy actually it was more likely to get Aerith for the date. She starts with the most points, and can earn a lot through her dialogue choices. So unless you go out of your way to be mean to her, she’s the most likely option you’ll receive at the gold saucer. Tifa is second, Yuffie is third, and Barret is fourth.
Great stuff. Its always good to see some comparison content between Western RPGs and JRPG's. Would love to have you on our podcast at some point? - Jack
You know great points besides the Final fantasy 15 one. The points you bring up are the biggest strengths of FFXV! What did you dislike so much about 15?
Thank you! :) I should make a video on FF15... besides the fact that I don't feel it offers anything that a good Final Fantasy should, it was a completely broken and inconsistent mess on launch, and it still feels so drab and disjointed.
I mean i personally dont like kh3 because the newer worlds like frozen and monsters inc just dont feel kh especially with the lack of kh story included in them.
A part of me feels bad for Steiner acting like the single father to two hormonal teens, a bratty baby girl, and a highly insecure baby boy. But somehow, it's worth it. Also, for someone with a crush on Zidane, the young girl with the horn sure is demanding of Vivi. Guess her main priority is more getting the right knight for herself, than getting her man per se.
I think the "Final Fantasy" that really set the bar for the series are 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10. No matter how hard I try, I can't connect to 9. Part of the reason is the character design, but there's also the fact 7, 8 and 10 set some standards for me about the works of main character romance and the scenario around it.
@@Retax7in my defense, emperor Matheus is "character analysis" material (besides a super popular villain in the community), and Squall is the main "FF" character in "Kingdom Hearts", not to mention he and Rinoa had EXTREMELY beautiful moments. And it's not that I hate 9. I just...can't connect. No matter how hard I try. Litterally, I remember it only because of Zidane, the two youngest characters, and because its story reminds me of "Demon Souls" (well, a positive version of it).

It just feels like I'm being told in my face "FF" is dying, and I'm just supposed to accept that.
@@meikisaragi1445 but enough negativity. I'm glad I'm not the only one who vibed with 8. Also, if I had to add another "FF" here as my favorite, it'd be a not-numbered one. Not to say it’s bad, but there’s lack of story in the beginning. That’s why people are confuse on the story of rebirth, because that part of the game nothing happens really, till the end.
One thing I want also is the game allowing to change the party leader. I want to roam around the world as Yuffie ! FFXIII was the only game to allow this
true! This was a great feature from FFXIII honestly
Half of the time I didn’t know who was with me until I saw an ice animation and was like “oh Jill’s there!” 😂
Final Fantasy 8 cast had the best dynamic and strongest chemistry in my opinion
I seriously need to play that
...if you pick the right options.
@AndyMeetsFantasy I agree on the launch issues but I'd encourage you to make a video anyways!
I knew I couldn't be the only one who noticed this ! And that's part of the reason "KH" post 2 started to flop.
My friend... KH3 DOESN'T EVEN HAVE FINAL FANTASY CHARACTERS. WHAT THE FUQ
@@AndyMeetsFantasy yes, but that's only a piece in the large machine. After 2, Sora started hogging everything.
I mean i personally dont like kh3 because the newer worlds like frozen and monsters inc just dont feel kh especially with the lack of kh story included in them.
@@JabamiLain I know
@@AndyMeetsFantasywhich is the whole point of my comment.
A part of me feels bad for Steiner acting like the single father to two hormonal teens, a bratty baby girl, and a highly insecure baby boy. But somehow, it's worth it.
Also, for someone with a crush on Zidane, the young girl with the horn sure is demanding of Vivi. Guess her main priority is more getting the right knight for herself, than getting her man per se.
haha Steiner being the single dad sounds oddly fitting
This is not final fantasy issue. This is ff16 issue. Ff14 arguably has the best party members and dynamics
FF14 is something completely different since it's an MMO
@AndyMeetsFantasy which makes it even more special, since mmo was nvr known for deep character interaction.
Like i said, this is not ff issue.
@@AndyMeetsFantasypeople do not play MMOS for the story, and I haven’t played it myself yet, but I hear so much respect for 14 story, and characters.
Uff 2 and 8. And hate 9 which is if not the best the second one... I guess there are truly different tastes for different people.
Litterally, I remember it only because of Zidane, the two youngest characters, and because its story reminds me of "Demon Souls" (well, a positive version of it).
we almost have the same favorites. mine's 6 7 8 10 15. currently playing through 16 but i'm still not feeling it for now.
I know 15 is like one of the most hated by the ff community, but I resonate with the story and characters so it's there.
@@meikisaragi1445 I didn't feel 16 either:
-The music that purposefully overpowers the classic "FF" tunes;
-The story that is almost rehash of "FF 2";
-The characters that feel like an americanazation of what they would be in a REAL "FF".
I'd add "Stranger of Paradise". It's another "FF" that receives a lot of hatred. But as I grew up, it somehow started feeling right to me. In a similar way to "FF X", it only got better the older I got, because the further I connected to it.
😂😂😂
adopt DEI and SBI, SE truly become FINAL fantasy
I'm curious where is the DEI???
don't engage with these people, it's nonsense
@@AndyMeetsFantasy I guessed as much though I was curious about what "fact" they were going to pull out of their ass lol
