One of the main reasons why I love the classic Final Fantasy games and their formula, is because they value the party-based journey. No matter the person, if a character is considered a main member of the gang, you bet they have a storyline which is integral to the plot, or which at least does a great job of informing it. I love that these games are not just about the titular "main" character, but that they are just as important to the themes as the former. In many ways, this is fairly unique to JRPGs, whether we're talking Final Fantasy or Persona games, even though these differ in their approach. But is there a difference between JRPGs and WRPGs or CRPGs in general, and how they approach the concept of the party and party members?

Why Final Fantasy IX Remains a Human Masterpiece in 2024
มุมมอง 60K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Why does Final Fantasy 9 hit different all these years later? It's been well over 20 years since FF9 launched on PlayStation, but it's managed to remain a constant in my gaming habits. It's vast world and charming art design is partly why I return to it, but the game's human story and characters, and themes surrounding existentialism, is something few other games have tackled as well, and certa...
As an avid Dragon Quest lover, Final Fantasy IX was the first one to get me into the FF series. It was then followed by FFIII and FFIV in the ds.
Rewatching this man, I forgot how much Roxxas was gaslighted through out intro, no wonder dude was going insane.
I need to play this game again
Chain of Memories was on the Game Boy Advanced; not the DS.
Greatest game of all time.
15:09 I was confused as hell too as a kid! Even more confused at that scene because I was one of the few kids who played Chain of memories before kh2 came out so seeing Axel alive was mindblowing
There is a world out there where the remake was ff9 rather than 7.
Totally agree. Clive’ story was amazing and compelling, but I wanted to know more about Cid I wanted to know more about Gav, and for fuck’s sake I wanted Jill to be allowed to do SOMETHING
The moment that pod opened up and the music swelled I teared up, and the moment The Twilight gang said goodbye to Sora, the tears were readily flowing. That game has so many memories. Memories ill keep in my heart forever ❤
"Can you feel Sora" Double entendre much
18:33 "starts with an S". Saying that along made me break out in tears man. i was 8 when KH 2 came out and i played it as soon as i could get my hands on it. Almost 20 years ago
16:08 Bro really said "Nintendo DS" skull emoji.
Ten thousand props for not cutting around "come here; I'll make it all stop! *BURN, BABY!*" don't know why, but those are the first lines that come to mind when I think of this game
i remember the feeling of starting up 2 as a kid and just going through it in twilight town wondering where sora was or what was going on it was soooo good
I remember playing 2 before finishing CoM because back then I thought CoM was just a self contained story and I got too frustrated with Larxene's battle 😂 I was clueless about who Namine and Diz were, and who Ansem really was. And I felt such a bittersweet feeling when I got to playing Sora because I felt a lot more connected with Roxas as a player character than Sora. KH2's intro still feels nostalgic to me today - to your point about the game growing up with us, I had just lost my grandmother the month before and Roxas's story gave me an outlet for my grief by redirecting my sadness and anger at something else. Yet somehow all these years later I feel a fondness when I think about it
Remember the days when Riku wasn't a gay furry? Man i feel old!
Song in the beginning?
stupid question maybe, but are you from Norway?
KH2's intro I think also worked as a lot of kid's first experience with unavoidable, unfair tragedy for someone of their age due to no fault of their own. In many ways, Roxas is a kid with a terminal genetic illness that they weren't even aware of until a doctor told them they have a week to live, but that one of their organs will be donated (say their heart for thematic consistency) to someone who needs it. His struggle and lack of ability to understand and then finally forced acceptance at the last moment is just plain unfair, but necessary, as that donated heart is going to someone destined to save the world basically. It's especially impactful with Sora going the whole game pretty much with no idea even that any of this occurred, up until a literal final confrontation with Roxas desperately trying to win back his own existence, which of course he must fail to for the sake of the world, and is again forced to accept the circumstances of his birth.
The Kingdom Hearts series will always be one of the best series ever.
This game traumatized me at age 10
Chain of memory's didn't came out on the Nintendo DS like you said in your video. It came out on the Gameboy advance.
I'm glad with what you said about Lindblum. I played the game somewhat rather casually and initially didn't even pay that much attention to the plot in my first playthrough, until I saw Lindblum, which truly drew me in into the story.
10:00 wow that is a wild tone shift that I had forgotten about. So much mystery in the first game.
Say it a lot but kh2 probably made me so much more emotionally intelligent by being exposed to it as 9 year old. The intro and the heaviness I felt about what was going on made me experience some version of nostalgia and longing that I hadn’t grasped yet at that point.
I honestly wish Sora perished and Roxas became the main character
all of a sudden everybody played kingdomhearts .....
The whole kh series up to dream drop distance was so magical. Something about this game i cant put in words
Agree.. I hated dream drop distance
I'm 27, and the whole roxas part made me so sad as a kid and even now. I played 358 days after 1 and 2, and that made it even worse. Roxas story is truly tragic
The fact that 2 came 2 years after 1 and that 3 came out well into its audiences adulthood shows the failure of this ridiculous studio for a game this beloved. Its absurd, its ridiculous and we should be angry.
You’re a great story teller. Do this for 358 next please
thank you, that's very kind :)
Idk if it was mentioned in the video cuz I zoned out for 5 min, but, Roxas handles his keyblade then same way Sora did in KH1 while in and out of combat running, standing, etc. Noticed that even as a kid, loved it.
It also got the best musics amonv all FFs in my opinion
Roxas falling as he talks to Kairi with that absolutely touching and beautiful music playing, and as Sora takes over, we watch Roxas approach the ground. What a scene, still makes me tear up.
W KINGDOM HEARTS
its like playing as raiden or venom during the pregame prologue (tanker/hospital/traverse town) and the main game (bigshell[hollows]/afghanistan/soras storyline)
Dude I cried as soon as I found out Roxas died and said..."Well I guess my summer vacation is over..." LIKE COME ON THE MAN JUST WANTED TO HANG OUT WITH HIS HOMIES, AND YOUR TELLING ME HE ISN'T "REAL"!?!!! HONESTLY MY HEART SHATTERED 💔💔
No game could top this RPG for a minute.
As someone who grew up with KH1 and KH2 it has been one amazing journey, nowadays I'm doing randomizers, 100%ing the games, and doing level 1 runs. But back then gaming was different and this game is still a unique masterpiece to this day. (heart)
Kh 2 was the first game I played in the series, finding this game in middle school, looking back at it now was a magical experience
Chain of Memories came out on the GBA. Other than that great vid.
Till today one of my best FF, just wanna commend square for CONSISTENTLY providing the best JRPG games out there. As an old man in his 40's, square could use my soul to create a remake of chrono cross, the game enchanted me.
Even if FFX is my favorite game of all time, and playing it nowadays still give me the feels, I think I never felt so complex feelings than playing KH2 intros... I remembered learning so late that the game was out, that when I bought it and started it, it was just... indescribable. and I felt so confused even after playing the game, because I NEVER KNEW THERE WAS A GBA GAME BEFORE WTF.
The first time I played KH2 and Sora shed a tear when saying goodbye to Roxas friends, but not knowing why he feels sad, it literally made me cry. I was 26 when that happened.
36:08 it came from Roxas, damnit Sora why you gotta be so dumb 😭
Those who completed this game, love it to bits. Those who didn’t, will never know.
i played kh1 at 14 the same age as sora was and a yr later after several playthroughs of 1 i got a used kh2 copy from gamestop and i played kh2 at 15 the same age as sora and then i played kh3 at 24 and sora is 16 *cries*
Final Fantasy XIII was turn based.
Having the context of everything we know now about kingdom hearts it really makes KH2 even more amazing. It’s funny you can actually see Xigbar(Luxu) troll Sora on several occasions throughout the game, he already knows everything that’s going to happen in the future lol.
It’s funny looking at the pre-rendered backgrounds now. Back in the 90’s it seemed kind of lame to be so restricted with the camera, but now I appreciate just how ahead of the times they were with the amount of detail they were able to put in their worlds. It would be multiple generations before games could look that good, that handcrafted with a free camera and 3D.
