Sadly, the airstone you said was $70 dollars a box is now considerably more! I did the math for building a faux brick fireplace/ tv, and it was more than $500 dollars just for the airstone! I can litterly use real bricks for less money. I just might do that, actually. I haven't decided to do this project yet as there are so many variables to consider. One being, whatever size I make the TV opening I'm stuck with forever. I currently have a 65-inch tv in my living room . Even if I make the opening for an 85-inch tv ,in the near distant future, I'm sure 100-inch tvs will be the norm, and I'll again be stuck with too small of an opening. Like I said, I'll need to think about this. I'll obviously need to design it to be upgradeable in the future without having to take it apart and rebuilding it. Just don't know yet. You did an excellent job on this ! It came out really nice! This gave me really good ideas 💡. Thanks!!
Hi Pappy. I agree the price has increased, and brick could be a better option. I took an educated gamble, and, looking at screen ratios, I felt comfortable with my choice; so far, so good. The size of the TV is limited to the width of the family room; this seems to be the `best fit.' We have a small theater downstairs in the rec-room; it has a 100" screen, so big VS convenient is the variable. I'm glad you like the build, it was a great project, and as of this date, it still works for us. That is hot right there! You literally made something from basic to exotic...I probably would've disregarded what my wife said & built that hidden compartment with the extra space for a gun cabinet, LOL! That really looks so nice & you made it look so easy. No matter how long the video was, it was worth every second with wondering what you were going to do next. I definitely wasn't expecting that mantle with hiding the DVR & Blu-Ray player...that can be an exotic home theater to with some cubic speakers in the walls throughout your living room. Your idea was good as you presented it. I look forward to viewing more of your videos in the future.

@@SouthernEngineering In our current house, there's a TV room that has a common wall with a living room. The living room has a wood burning fireplace that's been converted over to natural gas with an insert. On the TV room side, there's an ugly truth to the simple fireplace on the living room side -- an irregularly stepped pile of cinder blocks that go from 6 ft wide up to the ceiling where the chimney is about 2 1/2 feet wide. I was looking at your project as an idea on how to disguise this mess into a faux fire place, TV and hidden storage for the entertainment electronics. Your video has given me some really good ideas on how to solve this problem.

I would look for a smaller and simple project around your home as a practice run, it will help build skill and confidence. @@tessw9744 fireplaces are nice but whoever is outting them in houses has no idea what a good fireplace looks like. They are so ugly. There are products that help seal the fireplace to stop heat loss. Very nice fireplace.

Already did! And I'm a 24 y/o female who has never picked up a hammer (not literally but you get the idea). Just purchased my 1st home in July and I want to install a fireplace surround but I think its best for me to go the contractor route. Unfortunately right now I'm waiting on Irma so I don't even know if I'll have a house in a few days. But I like this idea because if you do purchase a new device, it's easy to insert it.

The video is the most difficult task for a project but I'm slowly learning the art of good video and appreciate your feedback. I had considered the TV issue, here are the variables I used to make my decision. I researched back 5 years and 3 major brands of 55" TV's and considered the bezel size, it has been shrinking slowly over that span of time.The ratio of a 16:9 is likely to remain the same in the foreseeable future.I allowed 1.5" in the X and Y dimensions for future variations in unit size. While it is a gamble, I consider it a safe bet. Between the wife and daughter, I've had a pretty busy summer. Hi Kevin. The room is 14' wide and our eyes are ~12' from the screen so the size of the TV is just right for this space. The faux fireplace is just for the atmosphere and is used infrequently (great for Christmas). Excellent, well done. Working on same concept for slate on a cabinet, however trying to work out the squared off corners. Trying t;o make this look like natural slate protruding from hillside due to water erosion. I have a couple of spots 2x 4 foot 3x5 foot with finshed Sheetrock in between them, on another wall in the room. now working on entire hillside concept on 9’ x 15’ wall. FYI 55” and 65” tv with fireplace man cave. Lol
Sadly, the airstone you said was $70 dollars a box is now considerably more! I did the math for building a faux brick fireplace/ tv, and it was more than $500 dollars just for the airstone! I can litterly use real bricks for less money. I just might do that, actually. I haven't decided to do this project yet as there are so many variables to consider. One being, whatever size I make the TV opening I'm stuck with forever. I currently have a 65-inch tv in my living room . Even if I make the opening for an 85-inch tv ,in the near distant future, I'm sure 100-inch tvs will be the norm, and I'll again be stuck with too small of an opening. Like I said, I'll need to think about this. I'll obviously need to design it to be upgradeable in the future without having to take it apart and rebuilding it. Just don't know yet. You did an excellent job on this ! It came out really nice! This gave me really good ideas 💡. Thanks!!
Hi Pappy. I agree the price has increased, and brick could be a better option. I took an educated gamble, and, looking at screen ratios, I felt comfortable with my choice; so far, so good. The size of the TV is limited to the width of the family room; this seems to be the `best fit.' We have a small theater downstairs in the rec-room; it has a 100" screen, so big VS convenient is the variable.
I'm glad you like the build, it was a great project, and as of this date, it still works for us.
Sorry for taking so long to respond; I have not been in the best of health; I am recovering and looking forward to returning to my shop.

That is hot right there! You literally made something from basic to exotic...I probably would've disregarded what my wife said & built that hidden compartment with the extra space for a gun cabinet, LOL! That really looks so nice & you made it look so easy. No matter how long the video was, it was worth every second with wondering what you were going to do next. I definitely wasn't expecting that mantle with hiding the DVR & Blu-Ray player...that can be an exotic home theater to with some cubic speakers in the walls throughout your living room. @@SouthernEngineering In our current house, there's a TV room that has a common wall with a living room. The living room has a wood burning fireplace that's been converted over to natural gas with an insert. On the TV room side, there's an ugly truth to the simple fireplace on the living room side -- an irregularly stepped pile of cinder blocks that go from 6 ft wide up to the ceiling where the chimney is about 2 1/2 feet wide. I was looking at your project as an idea on how to disguise this mess into a faux fire place, TV and hidden storage for the entertainment electronics. Your video has given me some really good ideas on how to solve this problem.

Yeah I like fireplaces too. But they can let a LOT of cold air into your house....It's like a wind tunnel.

@@tessw9744 fireplaces are nice but whoever is outting them in houses has no idea what a good fireplace looks like. They are so ugly. There are products that help seal the fireplace to stop heat loss. Very nice fireplace.

Already did! And I'm a 24 y/o female who has never picked up a hammer (not literally but you get the idea). Just purchased my 1st home in July and I want to install a fireplace surround but I think its best for me to go the contractor route. Unfortunately right now I'm waiting on Irma so I don't even know if I'll have a house in a few days. But I like this idea because if you do purchase a new device, it's easy to insert it.

Nice work, but the center of the tv is suppose to be at eye level. Why are people so obsessed with placing a tv above the fire place???????

Sadly I have no plans, I tend to wing my projects so all I have is a rough sketch on a sheet of paper.. I had no idea this project would be so popular or I would have been more detailed. Lesson learned. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have..

Great video, I am a 52 year old man married for 22 years, I wish I had your skill set, and temperament. Very professional video. Thanks !!!!!!! The only thing I would have done differently is allow for change and tech as it advances. It looks beautiful.
Thanks, glad you like it. Don't be so hard on yourself, I've spent a lifetime doing things the wrong way and slowly learning the right way. The video is the most difficult task for a project but I'm slowly learning the art of good video and appreciate your feedback.
I had considered the TV issue, here are the variables I used to make my decision.
I researched back 5 years and 3 major brands of 55" TV's and considered the bezel size, it has been shrinking slowly over that span of time.The ratio of a 16:9 is likely to remain the same in the foreseeable future.I allowed 1.5" in the X and Y dimensions for future variations in unit size.
While it is a gamble, I consider it a safe bet.

Hi Kevin. The room is 14' wide and our eyes are ~12' from the screen so the size of the TV is just right for this space. The faux fireplace is just for the atmosphere and is used infrequently (great for Christmas). Since I built this I have completed a couple of other projects on the `Honey Do' list, you may like the wet-bar I built with the same stone, check it out if you have time, personally, it's my favorite area in our home... Excellent, well done. Working on same concept for slate on a cabinet, however trying to work out the squared off corners. Trying t;o make this look like natural slate protruding from hillside due to water erosion. I have a couple of spots 2x 4 foot 3x5 foot with finshed Sheetrock in between them, on another wall in the room. now working on entire hillside concept on 9’ x 15’ wall. FYI 55” and 65” tv with fireplace man cave. Lol
