I always enjoy your videos! Such an incredibly beautiful area you live in! I’m looking forward to the next video in the series! I absolutely loved the black and white version of the otter!
Thank you so much for your kind words! It's truly a special place where I live. I'm excited to continue sharing more content with you, and I'm glad you liked the black and white version of the otter. Stay tuned for the next video in the series! Cheers
Your wife has a nice narrative voice, you should use her more often! Love your videography and Photography, I hope it all keeps growing! It’s a nice blend of nature and photography information. Thanks!
Incredible views Matt and very informative!! I have a trip planned in October around Tofino this year and this video has got me even more excited than I already was for some photography out on the Island.
Ooooo I love Tofino. The beaches, the trees and forest, Tacofino for food, Rhino Coffee for coffee and baked goods and the surfing, you will love it! Thank you for watching the video!
You are too kind thank you very much! Happy to hear you like the content and your feedback on the B&W. I was really feeling the B&W with the contrast of light and texture :). Stay tuned for the second part!
This was incredible! So much wildlife in one location! The close-ups were incredible and sharp. As always, I favored the B&W image of the otter for its contrast and texture. The color image is exceptional as well. I truly enjoyed the whole video.
It was a great trip. I heard there was a large gathering of multiple pods (a small super pod) of orcas after we left so you never know what you are going to get! Glad you really enjoyed this video. It took a long time to put together so I hope these videos pay off 😊. I really enjoy the field videos especially if I can include some tutorial work or a quick gear review in the field. The B&W image was a lot of fun to work on. You are 100% right when it comes to contrast and texture. Otters are so cool. Thank you for your feedback, always appreciated!
B&W is obvious isn't it 😄. The texture and lighting just works but you never who what your audience thinks which is why its fun to ask and hear the feedback. Thank you Renaat! It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife on Hornby! You never know what to expect during the herring spawn or if the spawn will take off while your there. More to share next week! Cheers
Excellent video Matt! As a fisheries biologist, who has a wildlife TH-cam channel, you did an amazing job of giving me enjoyment of both my passion’s! I also love the incorporation of your family :) Can’t wait for the next video!
I’ve been hunting the river otter in OH for the past 3 years, with no luck. There is a National Park about an hour from my house that has 2. That’s a bucket list animal for me. Personally I like the color shot. It’s great to hear that there are conservation efforts happening to protect this herring species. I take pictures of wildlife because I’m personally awed by Nature. Sometimes I wonder what our grandchildren will miss seeing if we don’t protect it. Love that your wife narrated part of this one! I love the vibe of your channel!
Hi Matt, glad to see you and the family are out on another adventure. Enjoyed the video and my vote is the black and white of the river otter, very dramatic.
Thank you 🙂! It was a bit chilly and wet the first night camping with the family but we really enjoyed our time away. Thanks for watching and your feedback!
Crazy to see you pull video and photos from the herring spawn, what a lot of work! But pays off when you can tell such a great story of behind the scenes
Thank you! Another for B&W thank you :). Yes, there is a Herring Festival on Hornby Island every year with information, artwork other artists and photographers to collaborate with and typically, it falls on the time when the herring are most likely to spawn.
Hi Matt, great little video about an awesome natural event. We went the boat route and went around Hornsby and Denman. We unfortunately missed out on the sixty plus Orca that were around the day before. We saw remnants of a spawn the day before, plenty of sea lions and some eagles. The day was hot and sunny and lovely on the water. Thanks for all the info on the run. Oh B/W on the otter shot for sure.
I caught it up in Qualicum Beach and then in Nanaimo. I missed the turquoise waters in Qualicum, but the wildlife were still there in the thousands. Thousands of surf scoters, which is more than I'd ever seen! In Nanaimo, I arrived the evening that the herring were starting to spawn at Neck Point and got some beautiful sunset shots of all the colours. Pretty great!
So great to hear! I saw photographs of the action happening at Qualicum Beach. We were close to leaving Hornby to check it out. Happy to hear that there was a lot of wildlife during your time there. Next time I'm getting a long extension pole for my go pro so I can get better herring shots in the water :)
Great video and thanks for sharing information about the herring. They are indeed critical to the health of our oceans. I hope the government of Canada can come to that realization and disallow fishing during the spawn.
Recent diving for six gilled sharks off the horny islands when I was 19. Was one of the best trips of my life. Great video. You’re a super talented story teller, educator and creator. Props to you from down under. 🙌 ps- BW otter for the win.
Otters...in fact, all mustelids, are the best family of mammals. Some great images there and on this occasion I think the B/W works as well as the colour images of the otter. The stage of the otters fur that transitions between fully wet when it emerges from the water and before it dries gives the best look for photos. This 'spiky' look helps create a more contrasty effect on the animal which is the reason that B/W works well., particularly in the right light. Just my personal thoughts Best wishes to you and your family from Wales.
I have to say I like the color version of the first portrait of the River Otter better than the b/w version. There’s something about that background that I really like. However, I like the b/w versions of the other otter photos better than the color. But I agree that there is something special about any image of a River Otter!
Hello matt i am harry from Greece and I find you randomly here because I like to see wildlife photography as a special moment of mother nature and the beauty of Vancouver island because I am me too the same as you and I want to see you growing as a professional photographer that I see you but you make me sad when your in a hurry to do photoshoot and forget to put your settings in more speed and then you don't have the results that you waited for but as your friend although we don't knowing each other i am going to tell you to put 1/2000 speed and higher when you shooting birds no matter if they are in the ground or in the air because I was doing the same wrong thing i want to gather some money because you are very far away from me and calling you when I'm ready to come and visit you for amazing photos to shoot together have a lovely day and see you in the new episode bye
Hi Geoff, thanks for connecting! I just subscribed to your channel, amazing work. Love that Herring Spawn video you published. Some amazing moments you captured wow! Hope to see you around.
Really enjoyed the video. For context on the commercial fishery, it would have been nice/educational to compare the impact of the current wasteful commercial fishery with the indigenous ‘roe on kelp’ herring fishery. So much to learn from native peoples. Too bad we choose not to.
Have you seen the herring spawn?
Join me on a Photography Workshop: www.mattshannon.ca/workshops.html
yes, it was amazing
Chilly time of year to camp but so worth it!
Another great video! Enjoyed your wife's narration - very soothing voice to listen to. Look forward to part 2 of the herring spawn.
B&W Otter pic looks very nice!! Love taking pics of them too.
Thank you for the feedback! Totally, I want to find more to photograph :)

That black and white otter image is sweet. The light looks really good in it.

Wow I need to go there. At Vancouver Island. You are one very blessed photographer just to be there.
Totally, I am truly bless!
Any river otters shots color or black and white is a blessing. I love all those subjects. I would never leave.
wow that is a lot of eggs! Crazy only 2 survive out of every 20,000!
Crazy eh!
I like the black and white edit of the otter
Thank you for the feedback!
Excellent content. I really enjoy these videos.
Thank you!
One of your best vids!
Awesome! Thank you! Hope to pump out more like it 😊
I can't believe the spawn this year. Thanks for making this so I can see what I missed out on.
Spectacular as always - OH, B&W on the Otter for me - this is a trip I must do in the future!

The way the otter vented was quite comical! The epitome of on camera over embellishment!
I cut most of it out, it went on for quite some time. The small was overwhelming lol.
I’m so happy that you’re getting near 20,000 subs! Hope you remember me! Been hear since 445
pretty crazy huh! Who would have thought. Thanks for sticking around since the beginning!
@@MattShannonPhoto all good :) and I’ll probably be here for a long time 😆
B&W no doubt
