    One of these is a little past my budget atm so I just picked up a 2006 flat top se standard with crescent moon dots and satin finish. Added a Santana pickguard and phase reverse along with a coil tap, caps, tone bleed etc. £250 all in, amazing guitar for the money.

    yes it may do everything the Les Paul does and vice versa but the LP doesn't have a trem so it's a step or two ahead in that direction. great sounding guitar

    Amazed how much the sounds are like my HB CST 24 deluxe ( plus mods) but with a trem.
    I don’t use a trem much so it suits me fine I think with the mods it came to around £225.
    So yes that PRS is a great guitar but I can’t justify spending more for what seems a close call to what I’ve got

    I genuinely believe the HFS is an underrated (and quite frankly misunderstood) pickup! It won me over as well for exactly the same reason… it really nails that Beano tone. How close do you have it to the strings?
    Great video btw!

      @JRobsonGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers mate. It's pretty low, I haven't measured it. But it's not far off being flush with the scratchplate. Essentially, as it was when I bought the guitar 👍

      Nice one! I think part of the magic might also be the all mahogany body…I much prefer the Standards than the Customs with the maple cap.

    Yep, great presentation of a fabulous guitar John. I've always steered clear of the OTT ornate stuff too ( and the bird inlays might float some people's boat but, to me, they are hideous ) This model is spot on in both looks and tones. I love it and you definitely know how to highlight its amazing versatility. PRS guitars are certainly beautifully crafted instruments and this one appeals to me.

    For me the PRS S2 studio is great, HSS but the with split single/coil humbuckers so you get a couple more voices. It's like my true workhorse guitar, and the thing about the S2 series, and why its attracting players not for the usual reason that players gravitate towards owning an investment, or a wall decoration of a PRS, rather than people who want the S2 guitar with the usual dot inlay neck, and no binding. All bells and whistles of a good PRS without the frills.

  • @daviddalziel884
    @daviddalziel884 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds great John ! Coil tap really gives some extra options. Not keen on the look of the guitar tbh though it does remind me of the Gibson worn SG series that were around a few was years back . Cheers

    Nice vid, + guitar, John, and it doesnt have the birds which is a massive plus for me. Have, you ever tried one of the fender fmt teles with duncan pups? Very similar to blondie and my go to swiss army knife of a guitar.

    Another rousing composition! I prefer HFS to the 85/15S in the current S2. I once had HFS pickups in a 93 PRS EG-II HSH. EGs were a lower spec version of the CEs, with bolt-on neck, a flat milled top like a Strat not carved like the CEs, with HFS humbuckers and a Fralin single coil in the middle. Plus had coil taps so 8 awesome tones, and plain dot inlays not birds. Great guitar, sadly stolen in 98. They show up on Reverb occasionally.

  • @BrentAdams
    @BrentAdams ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ah, yes! I find the PRS guitars (newer versions) have the MOST usable coil taps that I have ever used. I'm glad that you have given it a chance. While you are fond of the "fiddly" dual mini switches, I find the extra tones of combining one pickup tapped and one full humbucker another HUGELY fantastic tone that is more than welcome in a mix.

    That's a nice machine . . . Damn, one day we'll be on the same continent and we shall jam together. We are bandmates in another dimension, I know it. Glad you finally tracked me down! I'm due to receive my first Harley Benton any day, now. I understand you play through a Vox Tonelab, is it? EX?
    Also, I'd like your opinion of Amplitube and its ilk. Do you / have you? I'm in a very quiet physical space and for now everything I do is done via headphones and an Orange Crush 12. I'd love to pick your brain.

    • @JRobsonGuitar
      @JRobsonGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers mate. I used to use a Tonelab ST but a couple of years ago I started using amp sims. Bias Amp is FANTASTIC but lacks any FX; Bias FX has the FX but the amp sounds are pretty weak in my opinion. Amplitube is the worst, most artificial sounding & glitchy piece of software I've used in recent years. Best avoided. For the best amp & fx sounds, go for Guitar Rig 6. That said, these days I'm using a real amp - a Marshall DSL1 which I mic up with a Behringer B906 mic.
      Cheers 👍

    The Fun part about the S2 guitars is putting some gain on the amp and finding the infinite sustain notes on the neck.
    I’ll have to rewatch your review of the Vela because I remember you getting some cracking tones out of it.
