Excellent review and playing! Frets are perfect because the 2022 Tributes are PLEK'd by Gibson, just like their far-more-expensive Big Brothers. It does feel good (at least for some of us) to have a made in USA Gibson, and they will hold their value far more than any copy (and there are many). But, you know, different strokes for different blokes. The bottom line is that is a player is happy with their guitar, irrespective of make or model, and it brings them joy, that's what matters..
I have one in the honey burst… I installed the Slash alnico 2 Humbuckers… I love it… Plays as good if not better than my Standard… my neck doesn’t have the slight lip between the neck and fretboard… it is a work horse… Definitely my go to guitar… and I have quite a few guitars…
490R/T sound pretty good for an all rounder HB set, I think the Tribute series is a good value if you want the brand. But the wood grain is for sure a matter of luck. I bigtime lucked out with my LP Special Tribute Vintage Cherry. During the store sale it was the only P-90 model on the wall, all the 490R/T models were really plain grain, but the P-90s mahogany flame actually shimmered as they brought it down with a ladder, took my breath away. Then I played it and the sustain went on forever. 9 months on and I still can't believe my good fortune, one of my best guitars ever.
I had a Gibson Les Paul Less Plus 2015 that had the same neck to fretboard lip issue John. I lived with it for a few years but eventually it was a factor in me selling that one. I’m very happy with my Epiphone 1959 Les Paul that has no such issues.
You are truly a great player mate! This is great stuff! You should do a video on how you get your sounds, you using Reaper. I have the Reaper and a Focusrite sound card and loaded positive grid and I still can't get your tone. Thank you for posting this. I have the Gibson Les Paul Studio and is I still can't get your tone. I wish you or someone get post an tutorial on how to set this up.
In the demo around 7:03 y’all called it open airy Cowboy. I must say I loved the very acoustic guitar tone! Do you recall what settings used on guitar controls and amp tone etc. respectively Dallas.. as y’all know mines on the way.👍
I had one for a while. The best thing about it was the Gibson smell. I moved it on as the Epi LP Standard 59 Limited was a better keeper. Just loading a few Staropramen into the fridge to crack open this Friday at 5 to 5 :D
I've got the top range Epi 1960 Tribute Plus Les Paul that came out in 2011 (mine's 2014). It came with real Gibson Classic /57 pickups, Switchcraft toggle,Mallory Capacitors, hardshell case, etc,as close to a Gibson as you get and paid about $860.00 CDN funds. It's still a fab guitar,I wonder how this compares to it?
I've got the Prizm version and had the Bourbon Burst. I bought the 1959 Standard Limited and if I had to move one on it would be the highly acclaimed 59. The 1960s is as good or better.
Great video again mate. I was considering this guitar too. Despite all your single cut guitar reviews, this Dutch guy has been stubborn again and purchased a Tokai Love Rock, or "The Better Gibson" as Tokai owners call them. 😅
I played one at "Big Box Store" and it was perfect. Perfect. It is not "cheap, bottom of the line" John. It is its own thing. Promoted correctly, this beaut could save(!) Gibson. BTW, I own other Gibbys. It's just fun to play. But, don't order one. Go get it. That way the bitch-factor is limited. Oh, all Gibbys are B-Stock my friends.
Regarding the lip on the neck, I would definitely send it back, the problem is John, if you try move this guitar on, unfortunately the lip on the neck will devalue the guitar.
FWIW my 2021 tribute has none of these quality issues. But I put that down more to Peach Guitars than Gibson. I don't think Peach would let one out of the door like this. Why does Gibson need their dealers to do QC for them though...?
@@chriskitchen4772 It's true. I bought two custom shop LPs and they both went back due to terrible QC (the CS ebony bridge pickup was amazing though). How they got past the manufacturing and the (different) shops QC beggars belief.
"Epiphone to Gibson" by price range only, not quality or features. The top priced 25% Epiphones are better guitars IMHO than the bottom priced Gibson models.
I wouldn't buy it, nor would I spend 1K on any guitar with that join between the fretboard and neck. Its B stock. If you took that off a hanger in a shop surely you would put it straight back and choose another? Plus how much of a discount will a 2nd hand buyer want off it?
It seems like a very strange product. To me it looks like an unfinished Les Paul, and I'd guess it just ain't possible to get one for around a grand that is (finished) with the expensive labour costs in the USA. A Studio would seem like a more sensible investment if you're the kind of person who insists on buying Gibson, but don't want to pay for the Standard. That has a more basic build design that just will cost less, with that slab body and all.
Yes, it is strange. It would be interesting to know it this 'unfinished' Tribute is a one off or if they are all like that. If they are all 'unfinished' I would say that was a bit naff of Gibson to do that.
People have been paying $1000 for a headstock decal for years now. If I was a millionaire, I'd still go for a good Epiphone. They need to send USA-built Gibsons via China for QA inspection.

back online after moving to cornwall yeeyyyy lol good to be watching you again mate be in touch soon
Incredible. I just double checked my cheap Rally and Samick guitars and they don't have any ridge between the fretboard and neck.

Did y’all not like the Pups it came with? Just asking because I am waiting for mine to be delivered. Cheers Dallas

Thanks for the review, while Tenacious D fans would not call this the greatest guitar in the world due to being a Tribute.

Cheers mate. I did a video on the tones I use a few months ago. You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/26ohwph1lnQ/w-d-xo.html
Maybe that lip is there because they were about to put binding on the side of the neck.
In the demo around 7:03 y’all called it open airy Cowboy. I must say I loved the very acoustic guitar tone! Do you recall what settings used on guitar controls and amp tone etc. respectively Dallas.. as y’all know mines on the way.👍
For a clean tone I usually go for neck pickup with the volume on about 3 into a crunchy amp 👍
@ thanks Mate

That's B stock John. I would contact the supplier and, unless they could offer me a significant discount, I'd reject it. Very poor QC from Gibson.
Lesson: don't order, go get it. I'd NEVER mail order. I played these. Own several Gibbys. They are absolutely a delight to play.
@@sgtmac62 Lesson: A brand where you have to seek out the ones that aren't defective means that there are better brands out there. 😁

Appears to be the guitar that replaced my LP Studio which I love. Great sounds produced by you John..
Great playing, the LP sounds just like a Lp! Hey, how do you track your music for the videos? What software do you use?thank you.
Cheers mate. I record in Reaper & use Bias Amp for guitar tones 👍
Brilliant review John thinking about going for a Gibson like you not owned one for a long time, have you tried a 70’s model with mini humbuckers
That was my first Les Paul back in 84 👍
I predict the £399 Revstar will kick the £999 Gibson's proverbial butt :)
I agree. I believe in The end the Yamaha will be the keeper.
It sounds and looks great.
Regarding the lip on the neck, I would definitely send it back, the problem is John, if you try move this guitar on, unfortunately the lip on the neck will devalue the guitar.
Just at the start of the video, be interesting to hear about the dreaded (or not) tuning stability!
Send it Back.
My money's still on him cashing it in for a Fender American Performer Telecaster. He just can't resist 'em.
Or just buy a les paul in store from a reputable dealer that vets their stock and does setups. It will be fine.
@@chrisredding6673 Bet he has more GAS for the Sire LC T7
Thanks John great walkthrough 🎶🎵
Nice riff!

Good to see Gibson QC is up to the usual standard.
Ha - ha !!! That's funny, but also sad at the same time.

A Studio doesn't have a slab body. They have an arched top too.
That fretboard is totally unacceptable. That should of been a B stock. Gibson QC is still terrible.
