Hi SpaceRex, Thanks to your videos, I was able to make an informed decision on what NAS to get-I went with Synology! As someone new to this field, I really appreciate how accessible and thorough your content is. With your wealth of knowledge, I managed to set up a network that all my computers are connected to, which is fantastic. Now that I'm subscribed to your channel, I'm getting helpful updates on Synology packages too! I just finished my first update, and it went smoothly thanks to your guidance. Keep up the awesome work-it’s making a real difference.
Recently got a DS1522+ after coming across your channel while trying to figure out what to get for a NAS. Appreciate these videos for someone who is new and absolutely clueless!
Hey! Your videos are like a friendly guide, breaking down complex topics into easy-to-understand chunks. I recently upgraded my home network, and your advice was invaluable. I'm now confident in managing my NAS and backing up my precious data. Thanks to you, I've finally taken control of my tech life!
Thanks for confirming - I patched earlier today (now running DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 1 with updated packages) but its nice to have my "early adopter" approach vindicated.
@@SpaceRexWillwow, I didn't know that. Not terribly impressed tbh - if a unit is still in support, a major security update like this should be reported through the GUI. I thought mine was just being recalcitrant, and did a manual update. Guess I need to keep an eye out for DSM updates myself in future.
Hmm. Discovered my system won't let me log in - keeps asking me for the code, but then rejects the code I have from authly. Tried restarting the NAS, but still no dice. Not sure what to do about that, so it will remain unpatched until I can figure it out.
Thanks for this. I have been lax in checking for patches. 😭 Also, I quit using auto-update back when Microsoft had issues with WSUS where you weren’t sure any advertised update was actually legitimate. That’s been a while ago.
Thanks for the heads up patch requirements. WARNING to other users, my DS920+ with a DX517 had issues after the upgrade. Drive 3 and 4 of the DS920+ lost the system partition (fixed via repair partition). Drive four on the DX517 completely lost all data and showed as failed. Although I did not touch the box prior to the upgrade, powering it down and resetting the drive made it become healthy again. Unfortunately the data was gone, so I'm waiting the 2.5 days for the volume repair (good thing it was only one drive). As a IT Professional, I know I can't say the upgrade caused this, but it is extremely suspicious. My other DS920+, DS1522+ and two DS224+ units upgraded without issue.
Just did the manual update to patch 6 tonight. Seems to be all good thus far Also, tip for ya’ll. When downloading files, I’d always recommend verifying the hash. Easy way to do this on Windows - powershell -> certutil -hashfile MD5 That should spit out an identical MD5 to the one Synology posted online. If it doesn’t, don’t upload that puppy to your NAS lol. There’s equivalent ways to verify on Nix or Mac, but it’s been awhile, I’m typically running native Windows these days
If they're so concerned about potential exploits, why havent they fixed the volume encryption vulnerability yet? Seem's like something that would be an easy thing to fix. Just add a stern warning to users that they'll have to re-enter password when the unit reboots, and make this feature opt in. I can not understand why it's not fixed.
I spotted this yesterday following an email from Synology and updated. What is odd is that my ageing 216+ii no longer seems to check for updates on its own and I have to do everything manually. It's not EOL so I don't know why that has changed.
Load of bollocks by upgrading to the latest version of OS I will lose some original apps IE videos and features. I don't mind upgrading to the latest version of OS, but I want to keep all the apps to be able to run as when I purchased the hardware.
as soon as I learned that I can playback my movie/video files through Synology Drive app/portal, and since I view them on TV through DLNA media server anyway, I went with removing Video Station and upgraded to 7.2.2, and got one less app to remember
I was not able to login to my two Synology DS418 using my admin account after the SMB package has been autoupdated a few days ago (November 5, 2024). I could login with „ user account. The admin password was on file and it worked before the SMB package was automatically updated. To resolve the issue I had to reset the admin account and login with admin and no password. I tried to set that same password that did not work to login but the system would not allow this, because minimum password requirements were missing.
Thanks so much SpaceRex, awesome as usual! Strangely I did not get a Security Update email from them regarding this. I'm on 7.2.2, could that be why? 🧐
