Skoolie roof sealing my thoughts on Henry's tropicool

  • This video was done for a you tuber working on a skoolie conversion (dzlfreek) check out his channel. I did this video so he could get a look at the product and get my opinions on it's qualitys as far as coverage, sealing and adhesion. When I was researching for roof coatings to use on my skoolie I couldn't find any videos or opinions on Henry's tropi cool as a school bus roof coating. So here is an opinion and hopefully it helps someone feel more comfortable about dropping a good chunk of change on Henry's. Henry's didn't pay or sponsor me in any way for this video. Thank you I hope this helps anyone considering Henry's 100% silicone tropi-cool as an option for their skoolie roof

    I LOVE my Henri Tropicool roof coating!! I’ve had it on my porch roof for 3 years now n it’s as good as the first day I applied it. I prep’d the metal roof really, really well bc we’ll retire in this house in a few years; I don’t want to have to worry about any roof I work on ever again. The warranty is 50 years. I think we’ll make the next 20 no worries at all. I opted for the tan. It was a special order but I live in a dark brick home so white would have been too much against the brick. They also had a couple of grays but the tan was closer to the reflective value of white than the other custom order colors (think there are about 3 or 4, but if white works, it’s MUCH less expensive). Thanks for the videos!

    Thank you very much for posting this product review for Tropi-cool (as you said, no one else has reviewed this product). I have been repairing a roof leak created when previous owners would park the van under tree, and only using the vehicle for dog shows four times a year. My objective is to put solar panels on my van roof, but I think I'll lay a coat of Tropi-cool first. Thanks again!

I'm thinking about using it on our 39' Class A instead of ripping off the epdm/tpo rubber roof and then gluing the new rubber roof down. I'm getting too old that. Lol. Would you be willing to do a video comparing Henry's Tropicool to their Envirowhite or Solar Flex? The Tropicool is so much more expensive than the others and is advertised directly to RV owners. While the others are used for commercial roofing. In fact Envirowhite says specifically it expands to release moisture, which is a sale point on the Tropicool. I'm kinda wondering whether the Tropicool is much more different from the others and is instead essentially the same product marked up to make money off RV customers who will obviously be buying less product than a commercial company who buy it in huge bulk.

      Use the Tropi Cool which is Silicone. The rest are all Acrylic Elastomers and utterly useless on many points. If you have a flat roof where water pools, acrylic will bubble up and wash off. Silicone will not. Pay for it.

    • @billcarmichaeldotcom4274
      @billcarmichaeldotcom4274 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Tropi cool is made with silicone and states it's waterproof on flat surfaces. All other seal coatings in this product line are made of acrylic which can emulsify after 48 hrs of standing water so that's the biggest difference I see along with the length of the warranties.
      I haven't used any of these but I'm planning on going with the Tropi cool on a metal roof that someone had coated with asphalt emulsion for driveways. The coating is about 5 yrs old and started leaking again after neighbors walked all over the roof to work on their roof because the commercial spaces are connected...zero lot lines. I think the Tropi cool is the best choice based on my research.
      Good review and great camera work... Maybe get him a gimbal phone holder and he may start making movies.

    As for the window what are your thoughts on just regular silicone. I bought some xcel or something. It is a clear paintable silicone I believe.
    Just to throw it out there.. the rubber gaskets around some of my glass shrank and popped out. I don’t know where to buy more. I was tossing around the idea of cutting it and sticking it back in then fill the small gap with black RTV. Guess I’ll have to try it unless I can find rubber window gaskets that don’t cost more than my bus

    • @jessesmith1181

      The Ginger Bus Adventures. Thanks for the reply. I'm not a fan of silicone on anything that may need serviced or resealed later. It'll require you to super clean it off before you can reapply silicone it doesn't adhere to itself again once cured. I'll give it the fact that It does seal great. I talked to a Sherwin Williams rep who recommended me to check out their loxon caulk available in different colors for metal to metal applications. I haven't made it to pick up a sample to test yet If anyone else out there knows about loxon caulk please let us know your thoughts on it for bus window applications. Also open to any other product recommendations you think might fit this type of application. Thank you all

      Those interior gaskets are rolls that you need to buy commercially. Sigh. So much work just to find overpriced product. Try to find RV dealers and buy some off the service and parts guys. Take them some beer.
      The exterior caulk is butyl tape. Use Sikaflex (Home Depot) for finishing touches on sealing or gluing handles back on glass.

    G dam it that is good Camera work... But I have parkensons so i shake a lot

  • @mjremy2605
    @mjremy2605 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your son is very cute, but get a tripod and eliminate the shaking. Also, don't tell him to get you in the frame, we need to see closeups of the product. He was zooming in nicely before you told him to stand back and fit you in. This is a common amateur mistake. The kid's instincts were right on target. You should NOT be in the frame 85% of the time. The subject here is the paint. He is a natural photographer. Give him a tripod so he is steady.
    It took more than half the video to get to the point. Too much talk. Tell us main points.
    The kid also asked a very good question: "Why do you need to get the window out?"
    The answer is: Sooner or later, everything in an RV will need to be replaced. So you want those options.
    You did not use the patch sealant correctly. It is not meant for windows, but for tears in your rubber roof or holes, or cracks.
    Use it before top coating with Silicone Roof coating. Looks like you do little analysis and jump into the task. Not wise.
    What you need for your windows is Butyl Tape. Remove window frame on exterior side. Clean up rim by scraping and also alcohol or acetone. Lay a strip of butyl tape all along the perimeter frame. Lay your metal frame back on and screw into place. Seal top edge off with some Black or Clear Sikaflex caulk or silicone caulk. Smooth into place. The butyl tape keeps moisture out effectively but it is sandwiched between RV and rim. Use same butyl tape for other areas like lights, license plate light seal, etc.
    Henry's Tropi-Cool comes in two flavors: Regular and HS or High Solids. The HS is more environmentally friendly but needs stirring during use.
    You have only one option for roof coating and that is Silicone. The other option which is Acrylic, goes by all sorts of names - Elastomer, Rubber, etc. It is Acrylic paint same as Latex paint for your house. Useless. If you have water pooling on roof, the acrylic will bubble up and/or dissolve and wash off.
    With silicone, you have complete waterproofing, UV resistance, leak sealing, insulation, some degree of noise dampening. On the down side, it is pricey, attracts dirt, and is slippery.
    The other options for roof coatings are Durabak or similar moisture cured Polyurethane bedliner paint that can be applied with a roller brush, and Polyurea, same thing that coats garage floors. Polyurea is amazing stuff but very pricey and technical in application. Durabak is easy to apply.
