    The easiest way I've found to get around the cap shortage is to just make them yourself. Dixie Gun Works has the Tap-O-Cap, and there's a section in the book TM 31-210 dedicated to making priming compound so you don't have to rely on outside sources for that, either.

    • @lewismitchell5367
      @lewismitchell5367 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I've always finished my caps from the Tap-O-Cap by running them through a 12 point socket on a dowel the size of the nipple they are to be used on.

    I checked and I got CCI, RWS, and Remington. The Rems are an old sealed tin I got at a garage sale for 50 cents or something like that. The makers do not have the excuse that military takes priority for these type of primers! 😉I hope.

    Great video. I have the Cap maker from Sharpshooter 22 and the Prime-All priming compound from Sharpshooter 22 and they work great. I also have. Good supply of RWS 1075, Remington #10s and CCI#11s for all my percussion firearms. But I can remember for the past 3 years it was hard to find percussion caps.
    Take care, thank you.

    This cap shortage has had me passing on buying a cap & ball gun. Nobody local carries any and most online places I’ve gone to are out. It ridiculous that CCI only makes them once a year and who knows what’s going on at Remington with their financial problems.

    They are ultra rare here too. Sometimes around black powder hunting season our local store will come up with a few dozen packs of CCI # 11s but they go within minutes of being put out, so you kind of have to be there. I've never even seen a CCI #10 in the real world. I guess they just aren't in demand here. I'm not sure.
    I prefer Rem. #10s, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a tin in over 3 years now of them, so I guess they are pretty impossible to get here anymore.
    I was going to invest in a cap maker, but at about $100 when all is said and done, it just isn't in my budget right now.
    You would think that with the massive shortage every where CCI would see the opportunity to clean up and make a fortune. Even if only for a little while start production for a couple of months and fix this mess, but apparently their CEO has no vision. Because if it was me, I can see a massive opportunity to dominate the market! (Apparently they picked the wrong man for the job!)

    I just shot a CAS match with two ‘61 Navies. Using both CCI 11 and RWS 1075 caps, had at least one or two chambers fail to fire the first time around on every stage. And I was seating the caps with a dowel. Very frustrating. Remingtons never did that to me.😬

  • @woodrowbrimm2805
    @woodrowbrimm2805 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Where I live I can find CCI#11 but not Rem.#10. Before the Shortage I bought a bunch of RWS 1075 and 1075+ which seem to fit better but now I can't find them anymore and Graf and Sons doesn't have them either. I also got a few WIN #11Mag. but they fall off badly. Only one place in town I can find anything. They had a few Rem.#10 for a couple of weeks and they fit my Pietta's but now all he can get are Rem#11 which fall off. I bought the tool from .22LR Reloader but had issues with fit also the priming compound doesn't work unless I leave out the Yellow (Dextrin) and use Duco Cement Diluted with Acetone. Pack the Compound firmly before adding the Duco/Acetone mix and dry overnight. I made a small loading block for the caps with the holes a little tight and use a flat ended drill bit to flatten the cups and form them to the inside of the holes in the loading block before filling. Now my DIY caps stay on the Cones and actually fire most of the time. I used to only get 1 or 2 per cylinder.

  • @DeucesWildRC
    @DeucesWildRC 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I really wish percussion caps were easier to get, I have made my own with the .22LR reloader kit but I’d rather just buy them, it takes quite a bit of time to make them by hand, also the mercury fulminate leaves less residue on the cones than .22 primer does

    Nipples are a factor as well. The stock nipples are conical, while aftermarket ones like SlixShots are straight-walled.
    The mark against the CCI caps really manifests if you mount them onto a stock nipple, because the outer diameter of the nipple is smaller at the top than it is farther down, and the shorter cap doesn't get as far down as the Remington caps.

    Not my experience at all on an older Italian 1858 repro---Rem #10 works great, CCI #11 all fall off quite easily under recoil. So, it all depends on the gun/nipple.

    Like yourself, I stocked up on components prior to the plan-demik. When everyone else was out of ammo, caps, primers, powder etc. I was ok. And like the grasshopper to the ant, folks wanted my stuff. Sorry, but their poor planing is not my fault.
    After the big über shortage, some years back, I swore that I'd never be caught short again. Living on a pension, that's 12% below the national poverty level, I'd buy components every month. Not alot, but I was methodical in my approach to things.
