*Loved* the ZX Spectrum! I grew up with bootlegged games here in Italy - basically, some guys had access to Spectrum games, tweaked some lines of code, changed the game's name in the loading screen (usually to some broken English word salad) and published them on compilation cassettes that were sold through newsstand outlets. That was a great way to play lots of amazing games - although we didn't know what they were 😃. Also, I _never_ for the life of me understood what I had to do in almost any Spectrum game 😄
Thanks so much for uploading these games! I loved my Spectrum 48K+ and then my 128K+. Three games in particular I loved playing which you've uploaded were Fred, Beach Head and Combat Lynx among many others! I want to play these again now 👍
Great memories! I'll be trying a few of these. Those Ultimate games still look great now, I love the colours and style of Sabre Wulf. TLL really impressed me at the time. And Lords of Midnight, the atmosphere it conjured up was marvellous!
Loved my Spectrum, that and my Amiga were the best two gaming machines I ever had. Yes games today run better and have better graphics but nothing beats the addictiveness of those two machines.
Spectrum is way better than C64!! yeah I'm gonna be THAT guy, proudly! 😉 1984 was definitely a great year for the early 80's computer scene. A lot of the all time greatest titles appearing this year.
Back in the early 80s I had the Speccy 48k and the C64 Breadbin. The Speccy is not "way" better than the C64 just as much as the C64 is not "way" better than the Speccy. Even though it was 80s playground politics. Each machine has it's pros and cons, for instance the Speccy 3D and Isometric with well defined high res characters was awesome and the C64 amazing SID chip, ultra smooth scrolling and parallax abilites. They're both awesome machines in my book and we'd not be where we are today without either of them. Although one thing in my view is they both have dismal colour palettes. Speccy is too limited and too bright, C64 is too dark and too pastel. But between them both they were absolutely awesome machines.
@@chillivodka01 Haha. I think we all knew the C64 was better, but we had the Spectrum so it was the best. Also, it was way easier to "get" games for it. At least in my area.
Undoubtedly the 2 biggest games of this year - Sabre Wulf and Knight Lore!!! I don't intentionally mention Underwurlde as that was a bit overshadowed by Knight Lore which was released along...
I didn't quite understand what I need to do in Knightlore as a kid (loved the gfx though). I did loved bouncing around in the castle and underground in Underwurlde :)
Bet this was a difficult one, I'm thinking of doing my own top 20 on my channel, not a easy task at all😂 Well done here, brings back a lot of great memories.
Loved Sabre Wulf but could never get into Knightlore. Also remember having Jasper at the time and being blown away by it graphically (not by the colours though only had a portable b&w telly!)
Just watched this after watching 1985-91 and have to say we were so gullible in our youth. The game quality totally regressed and the racing games in particular were just carbon copies of each other!
Companies that published each of the games are listed on the bottom left of the screen in the video. If by "rareware" you mean Ultimate Play The Game (they later became "Rare" if I remember correctly), then no, some of the games on the list are from them, but most are not. Thanks for watching the video.
@@Teltharion they really are!! I too had a C64 before I had a Spectrum, and I kinda wish I had the Spectrum first haha...but I do like both computers, I also love the BBC Micro!! I'm not much a fan of C64's graphics a lot of times but it depends on the game.
Although C64 was a superior machine in many ways (SID and sprites to give 2 examples), I don't agree that Speccy was rubbish. I had Spectrum in the 80s and my cousin had C64. And some games were superior on C64, while others were much better on the Speccy. 3d stuff especially was far superior on Spectrum (probably due to the faster processor), but there were also platformers, arcades, etc... that were just better written on Spectrum. For me personally, each of them machines has strengths and weaknesses - and both were great. But as I said - that's just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
@@retrononameIt's also my opinion. Each machine had its strengths and weaknesses. I found the graphics being much finer on the Speccy in several games, despite the attributes clash. And I had a c64 as well, so I perfectly know both worlds. The biggest asset of the c64 was the Sid. It was revolutionary and had (and still has) this unique analoguish sound.
I don't agree here, without the sid chip, I dont think the 64 would have been as successful. The speccy graphics looked a lot more detailed than the C64 on a lot of games too, and I have both. And if you had the speccy first, you would've loved it, so many great games to play, it was always the underdog, but it had some classic games, Jetpac, skooldaze, Sabrewulf which are perfect examples.
Nice compilation.Hours and hours of fun playing these as a teen.Great games for such a humble machine.
Agreed! And thanks for watching the video.

The Speccy 48k was unstoppable in '84
!984 is one of the best years for super games. I was really hooked to Tir Na Nog hour and hours playime.
With a beautiful map from Crash Magazine...

Hey, I'm glad you liked the videos and that you got to relieve a few nice memories.
And thanks for watching!
Lords of midnight. Wow, what a game. Revolutionary at the time.
Agreed. So many different locations in the game squeezed into 48k of memory.
Great video, Probably my favorite year for Speccy games such brilliant times, Gonna get myself a ZX Touch now and relive those great memories,

I got Dark Star and 3D Starstrike for Christmas that year. Loved both of them. Dark Star had an interesting hi score table 😊

Best year ever for the games! Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge are best games made for Speccy

@@jal051I’m with you on that one. Underwurlde was my favourite too.
I prefer Sabre Wulf and games like Manic Miner, Dynamite Dan,...
Prob the strongest year for the speccy game wise
For me 85/65 were the best years. But I may be a tad biased as 1985 is the year I got my first Speccy ;)
1984 a fantastic year as well.

Thank you. :)
Great games 👍🏻
Thank you and thanks for watching.
scooldaze and booty were particular fav games love the music in booty not many people have it listed in specy reviews.

Yeh, I didn't quite understand what I need to do in Knightlore as a kid, but was still in awe of the "3d" graphics in the game :)
Beautifull
Thank you

Apparently, Gift from The Gods uses source code from Bandersnatch, the lost 8-Bit Mega-Game from Imagine.
🥇Wonderful🥇
Deathchase would have been in my list, but some new ones for me to checkout thanks.
I think you will find 3d Deathchase in Top 50 games in 1983 ;)
Thanks for watching!
My bad!
No room for The Snowman on your list?

7:49 wtf this music, my head just got to resonance
Did I see Harriet Attack or any Hungry Horace!
SabreWulf, Knight Lore, Sir Lancelot, ... :-)
...what ? 2021 - 1984 = ...?? Outch ! O.o
(...sigh...)
Only 48k?
Yep :)
are all of those game created by rareware

We need a remake of BC Bill!!! This game has not aged well at all, imagine the WOKE brigade with that old gem.
thank god my 1st computer was a C64
I think you're missing out, the games look and play a lot of better on Spectrum 😁
