  • Raquel Baldocchi is a mixed-media contemporary artist in the Bay Area. Raquel draws inspiration from her grandmother, who created textile art, made beautiful scrapbooks, and crafted ornaments every year for Christmas.
Raquel’s college boyfriend’s mother was a printmaker. She influenced Raquel so much that Raquel pursued a degree in printmaking. Now, every piece of art that Raquel creates is infused with a story.
In this episode, Raquel and I have a conversation in my studio while we’re creating. Join us by bringing along a sketchbook or something you are working on, and allow yourself to be inspired to create something new.

I was selling my art one year in a local Sci-Fi convention. I had a variety of different kinds of art, some was just mine and some was collaborative work with my husband. This story is about the one of my pieces that sold that year. An older man came over to my booth looks at a painting I did of a young woman walking on a shining path toward a bright light in front of her. She had a dress/robe kind of garment on and long flowing hair. He stared at it for a while and then put it down and walked away. Later he came back and he'd made up his mind, he bought it and then told me why. The painting reminded him of his wife who had passed not long before this convention. For him it represented who she was and that she had "walked into the light". He was near crying and so was I, I said, "I'm so glad you found this painting, it must have been meant for you." The title of the piece was "Walk in the Light". You just never know what someone else will see in your work, and sometimes it's just amazing to me.

Love this pod/ visual cast..but my agony at the beginning..Rachel talking about lovely papers..and you Nick have the most scrumptious palette paper..which you then pour paint onto..I wanted to snatch it up!! So glad Gelli printed papers being recognised for how wonderful they are . 🙂

thanks sooo much for this today, Raquel hit home for me today, last week of CVP and I was feeling a bit down about not really having the time for much art during the program and then I see her fabulous art with collaging her own papers, I already do that when I make birthday cards for people, cutting up discarded paintings!!! People always say I should sell them, but I don't want to, I just love painting so much! I can go into the studio and just make papers as PLAY and oh my....what I can create! I played in my journal while you were both working alongside, watched twice to keep going! Nick, awesome!!!!!

Love this format of creating and conversation. Gelli printing is magical and so fun. I’ve been working with medical exam paper and when wet it is so transparent and more durable than the wet strength tissue. Thanks for sharing this amazing conversation. 😍

New to art. Love these pod casts.
Interested in adding fabric and threads in a mixed media piece. Even tho I’m not even an adequate drawer. Certainly not a person who sews.
Started art work attempt’s probably 4 years ago on a hit or miss basis. Graphite and watercolors. Mix it all over the place now but no oils yet.
Anyway - threads and fabric intrigues!

Beautiful. But, now I can't take your podcast on a walk anymore! Have to keep stopping to see what's happening on screen. This seems obvious, but does this sound right anyone? She collages, then draws/paints, then perhaps add'l collage?
