Has the Flying Scotsman pulled its last train ? As the Flying Scotsman's maintenance contract has now ended, it is up to the bean counters in London if they are willing to enter another maintenance contract to keep the locomotive running. If they decide not to the the Locomotive will join Mallard and become a static display. Lets keep our fingers crossed they keep it running, even if it is just for use on heritage railways.

I know some people are tired of Scotsman, but the number of supporters that went to visit it this year (me included) shows how many people love the loco and still want to see it run.

The national railway museum must not get rid of it it’s special to us all and maybe as a plan idea they could repaint it back in it’s LNER livery and numbered 4472 again

Looks like Western Champion might be on it's way to the main line again. She's my favourite.

As an American, I'm rather envious that you guys get to have your steam engines pull normal trains. It makes history something that finds you, instead of having to search for it. Definitely should keep the Scotsman in its current role, money be damned.

I Don’t Want This Engine To Retire, I Want To See It Still Running On The Main Line. Also What’s The Name Of The Song In The Background 0:00

Is scotsman really going to be on Display!? I dont want her on Display!! She must run again. Hopefully she will steam up again

There’s absolutely no chance that Scotsman will be retired from the mainline, she’s only just come back from her latest overhaul which gives another 7 years of mainline operations (now about 6 years) and the premium that she attracts on tour pricing means that she more than makes her money back. Contracts come and go but Scotsman will long out live most of us!

@@TrainsPlanesAutomobiles I thought it would be highly unauthodox not to allow her to steam - what NRM have said makes perfect sense.

personal am ok with scotsman just been used on preserved lines great way to bring money for those lines plus she about 2 years left on her boiler ticket you think it make more sense to keep her in traffic until it expires ?

Hopefully the NRM will allow one of the major steam railways to operate/maintain it.

FS had an mid-overhaul during 2022 so it could run for its centenary, so it's got some years yet.

I am a fan of the A3s particularly in Scotsman's present form in BR green, double chimney and German pattern smoke deflectors. My favourite was 65009 "Tracery".
I even have a 30 year old Hornby "Flying Scotsman" in my display cabinet, but I'm afraid that the bean counters may be right. You cannot keep chucking large sums of money at one loco all the time, when there are so many calls on the funds available.
Speaking as a former volunteer and part-owner of an item of rolling stock, I think that the whole heritage situation needs a rethink. There may even be too many heritage lines all competing for the same business. And a business is what it is. The maintenance of steam (or diesel) locos is very costly and some lines have already had to lay off some of their staff. Fewer lines and Steam centres spread around the country would, I feel, be more successful financially with some main line running specials for the most reliable locos.
Unfortunately, the over-hyped Scotsman is not one of those so maybe retirement would be the best option.

My own personal choice is 4472 in LNER apple green, but so long as it turns up I am not really bothered what colour it is in

It is time for it to be retired. Too much money and publicity have been wasted on this one locomotive. There is so much more the National Museum could do with the money.

I'm ok with the King of the British Rails not pulling trains as often as he's used to. Plus it's kind of weird not seeing him without his extra tender.

Almost everything good has been binned in our formerly great country. So why not the Flying Scotsman? History will be rewritten saying the Americans made all the great locomotives.
