Arson attack at Rushden Heritage Railway

  • A beautiful, preserved railway carriage was set on fire by re-offending youths at The Rushden Transport Heritage Railway on Wednesday evening, 17th April 2024.
I take a walk with Alfie Bryan who along with many others have spent many hours volunteering at RHTS. We walk up the old Wellingborough to Rushden & Higham Railway so Ryan I could inspect the carriage myself and film for you all to inspect too.
The fire brigade struggled to access the fire but still managed to bring the fire under control. Well done to those legends that answered the call
I'm very angry at the fact the police have had the youths pointed out to them but nothing has been done yet again and that comes across in the video. Sorry FEDS but you're slacking.

What pisses me off, is that all these kids have all the top of the range mobile phones, PlayStation, Xbox yet they still have to come out and destroy something that doesn't belong to them, it's an absolute disgrace. As far as I'm concerned, they need to be caught, taken to court, but rather than sending them to a young offenders, they should be made to volunteer at that railway for 5 years, and be made to get there hands dirty in some work, but first of all, sell there phones and PlayStation or what ever they have to keep them entertained, to go towards having to replace that old carriage which they destroyed.

Cheers Purple. Condolences to the Rushden heritage Railway and the people of Rushden. I completely agree with your comments Purple, when as a society are we going to start valuing things again?, fed up with this no consequence, no accountability blame something else mentality-and that’s just the Police!. I’d better shut up before I really get into gear!, all the best for now.

Hello Purple, a long time before you were born in the year 1963, a documentary entitled Branchline Railway was made by the BBC,i itcwas about the Somerset and Dorset railway.
Sir John Betijmin saw an old GWR auto coach that was later vandalised and his comment was priceless, he said some people hate things well made, it gives them a guilty conscience.

Heartbreaking. As a nipper I was a bit of a scally but never anything like this. It shamed me what I got up to that I finished up joining the Fire Service as an adult. Turned out that many of my colleagues there did the same in their youth. Ended up on the receiving end of teenage arson. It will play on those kids minds what they've done at some point down the line (no pun intended).

Lots of comments criticising the police inaction. It now seems endemic across the whole country. The only thing I would say in defence of the police is that cuts in funding around the country have meant there is now a significant shortfall between the numbers we need to police effectively and the numbers in post or in training. My heart goes out to all those who dedicate their time to restoring rolling stock, only to have it destroyed by mindless thugs/idiots.

Such A shame, The other night two pacers were graffitied at Midland Railway Butterley. This is not the first time Butterley have been targeted, as back In January a class 108s windows were shattered and one of the signal boxes windows were also smashed in. There was also the issue with Orton Mere signal box. It is such a shame Heritage railways should need to take security actions to try and tackle these offenders, just because these idiots make the "effort" to spoil everyone elses enjoyment and hard work. Midlessness. Glad to see that you are as enthusiastic about it as I am.

I hope, now you've highlighted it on your channel, that someone will either know who did this, and hand them in, or the police will do something about it. It's disgusting what some kids of today do. As you said in the video, that carriage was a part of our history, and now it's ruined.

Absolutely heartbreaking! Just stumbled across this video, had a look at your channel and want to say hello from a new subscriber. Fully agree with everything you said in this video. Something needs to happen. I can kind of get my head around them breaking in and having an explore or hanging out in that carriage (not that I agree with trespassing on a heritage railway) I can even understand them grafittiing something (again don't agree with it but can sort of get why it appeals to them) what I can't understand is why they feel the need to burn it down, what does that actually achieve?

Its so sad these people do this , and as i volunteer at a local heritage railway , and we have incidents of kids causing vandalism, and also i am a part owner of 2 airliners which we are restoring, i really think heritage railways and aviation museums and other heritage museum sites need to get our government to do something and make doing damage a serious crime and penaltys that will make these kids think twice.

So sad to see this. We could all go creeping around doing this sort of vandalism, but most of us don't, and never would. It takes better people to take a neglected old railway carriage and restore it. I feel sad for the people who had been working on it before this happened. Regarding grafitti, I hate it, however "artistic", and feel that it's biggest fans are the spray can and paint manufacturers.

It's not just the police, it's the courts who need to take a lot of the blame. The police go to the effort of catching them, charging them, and the courts just let them off with weak sentences. The police are then wasting time running after the same repeat offenders.

Sounds like the local community lack confidence in the Police and even being from over the pond, I can see why. This is destroying English heritage and it may not be some famous statue or painting, but it is still our heritage that cannot be replaced. England is not the same country I left and to be honest I do not know if I would recognize it if I came back. I hear talk of conscription into the armed forces to bolster the numbers and it sounds that people like this gang may learn a thing or two about how to behave in our society from it.
