I believe the reasoning behind why women like the “bad boy” stems from a biological need to reproduce with a mate that is always close to danger. Usually the stronger survive in nature, meaning the only ones that were left were the fittest and the most resilient. To have strength one must endure pain and hardship and the bad boy archetype usually embodies this. Motorcycle riders, fighters, race car drivers, thugs. They are always in danger and always have to endure hardship to get to the next level, they have to show some mental or physical prowess in order to stay alive or succeed in their field. Obviously, we aren’t fighting in wars anymore but this is the closest thing we get to it. Correct me if I’m wrong, just my take on it.

As a biologist, I'm of the thought that it comes down to several biological factors relating to the female reptilian brain (limbic region). There's a hypothesis called sexy gene theory; when it comes to female choice, many female animals look for traits in the male that will ensure their (especially male) offspring will be able to survive and procreate. Whether the species in question has the males obtaining mates through various strategies such as aggression, being good looking, having resources, having a great song n dance...it doesnt matter. Humans are unique among species in that we are the only species that use every possible mating strategy, whereas all other species use one or at most 2. Some of these strategies are in direct conflict with each other....performance vs resources. Aggression vs looks. Another factor is that when there is lack of resources being provided by the environment, females prefer more short term strategies. They'd rather a mate that can take other males limited resources if needs be, even if they have to be in a harem. A lot of women are stuck in that basic "survive" mindset. There's more to it going into socialization, culture, politics etc...but the biological basis is the root of it.
Because people don't pick the person, they usually pick the pattern. So if the pattern that they know is trauma and abuse, then they pick a partner who sets up that environment. If the pattern is love and care, then they'll pick someone 'nice'. If someone keeps attracting toxic people, it's time for self-reflection. But that doesn't always change the pattern as that required constant deep self-awareness. Therapy can point the path, but doesn't fix the problem.

When these woman who were young were getting abused by their fathers, their minds gets change into thinking that abuse is a normal thing because from a child's perspective, anything that a grown-up does is normal. Children are always taught that adults are responsible people especially their own parents. So an adult can abuse their child and the child will think that abuse is normal and when the child becomes an adult, they will either become the abuser or get with someone who abuses them. Unfortunately this is true. I spent a huge majority of my time fighting the stereotype. Volunteering at my church. Double majoring in political science and Chinese language studies. No baby mamas. He very carefully got out of that relationship. There is something very wrong mentally with these women who get into and stay in abusive relationships. I don't understand this at all.
One reason I think women reject nice guys and pick criminals is because I believe they are wired that way. Think about it, before modern society women depended on strong men to protect them. If you are living on a farm in a village and a wolf comes to eat your children it is the men that have to fight off the wolf. You can't negotiate with a wolf, you can't bribe a wolf you can only fight it. So women instinctively are driven to seek strong men, and reject weak "nice men".
Criminals are not strong men. If that was so women would go for physical powerfull men or social powerfull men. Neither is the case with criminals. I believe the reasoning behind why women like the “bad boy” stems from a biological need to reproduce with a mate that is always close to danger. Usually the stronger survive in nature, meaning the only ones that were left were the fittest and the most resilient. To have strength one must endure pain and hardship and the bad boy archetype usually embodies this. Motorcycle riders, fighters, race car drivers, thugs. They are always in danger and always have to endure hardship to get to the next level, they have to show some mental or physical prowess in order to stay alive or succeed in their field. Obviously, we aren’t fighting in wars anymore but this is the closest thing we get to it. Correct me if I’m wrong, just my take on it.
The women choose like this because it makes them feel secure that they can be protected, that even if they are in danger they can depend on someone who has been through hell. But times have changed there is no need for that.

We men also bear some responsibility for letting things get so out of control. The problem is the laws that we have in place here in the United States and Europe encourage women to break up their families. In many cases, the reward for breaking up a family is worth more to the woman than staying is a relationship. There needs to be something that comes along to balance everything out. See, women have social media that helps them choose from a HUGE pool of men that would like to go out with them. And this why many of them don't act right and do what they do these days. Well, men now need something that's similar. There needs to be something that give guys a bunch of women to choose from.

These woman who always go back to the abusive guy were abused from a young age by their dads. Everything starts in the home. When these woman who were young were getting abused by their fathers, their minds gets change into thinking that abuse is a normal thing because from a child's perspective, anything that a grown-up does is normal. Children are always taught that adults are responsible people especially their own parents. So an adult can abuse their child and the child will think that abuse is normal and when the child becomes an adult, they will either become the abuser or get with someone who abuses them. That's one reason and it's so sad.
Another reason is that these woman who get abused from a young age, they subconsciously will slowly start to become attracted to the abuse.
