Beautiful video. Lopez Island is our favorite San Juan Island. I think we have ridden our bikes around it 25 or 30 times. It's so quiet and beautiful. We didn't even though the Mackaye boat launch was there. The road turns just before you can see the boat launch. Nice to see the island from the water.

Fantastic! I've kayaked to Long Island a number of times. Very trick tides between Charles and Long! Before I moved to Lopez I was in video production so I also really appreciate all the work you put into your videos.

Thanks, tricky tides and currents for sure. I also did a paddle nearby on the San Juan Island side through Cattle Point Narrows past Goose Island and currents there can also go higher than 3 knots so careful planning is essential. We hope to visit Lopez Island again soon. Such a beautiful island, and so many amazing kayaking trips still to do.

Wow, nice and calm!
About a year or two ago, I planned a kayak trip from Anacortes, round to Cattle Pass, to Turn Island. The wind forcast was 35 knots plus in the San Juan Straight, so I bagged the trip. When both the winds and currents pick up in Cattle Pass, it becomes a really rough neighborhood.

Thanks for the update. I agree on caution warranted in this area, both winds and currents. That said, great area when conditions are right.

would you say mackaye harbor is a good paddling spot for beginners? Just starting to learn and looking for protected bays/calm areas to kayak when I visit in May.

Absolutely. Nice and sheltered around the bay. There's also lots to see along the shore, especially around low tide. Karen and I paddled along the north shore of the bay, and I then paddled solo out to Charles and Long Island. I would not recommend that last part, paddling out to the islands, for beginners though as the currents around the islands can be a challenge. Check winds before you paddle. We like paddling in the morning and when winds < 5 knots. Have a great paddle. BTW another option is around Spencer Spit which can also be great for beginners.
