Kayaking in a WILDLIFE WONDERLAND! Turtles, Beavers, Eagles, Herons, Kingfishers, Fish, Deer & More
Lake Sammamish State Park, nestled in the heart of Issaquah, Washington, beckons outdoor enthusiasts with its 531 acres of natural beauty. As you glide across the water, the park reveals its secrets-a harmonious blend of wildlife, serene landscapes, and captivating encounters.
Lake Sammamish State Park cradles 6,858 feet of waterfront along Lake Sammamish. Beyond its recreational offerings, this area holds cultural significance as a gathering place for Native American tribes. Here, the land hums with life-a symphony of birdsong, rustling leaves, and gentle waves.
You launch your kayak from the park's boat ramp, the water welcoming you with a cool embrace. The sun dances on the surface, promising adventure. As you paddle away, the shoreline unfolds-a canvas of greenery and hidden coves.
Gliding near the shore, you spot painted turtles sunbathing on half-submerged logs. Their colorful shells catch your eye-a mosaic of earthy browns and vibrant yellows. These ancient reptiles have found their sanctuary here, blending seamlessly into the tranquil surroundings.
Your kayak drifts closer to the reedy shallows. There it is-a beaver lodge, a testament to nature's engineering prowess. The beavers work tirelessly, creating their watery haven. You imagine their busy lives-gnawing on branches, building dams, and shaping their underwater abode.
Suddenly, the water ripples. A shadow moves beneath your kayak. You peer down, and there they are-huge fish gliding gracefully. Perhaps a smallmouth bass or a cutthroat trout. Their size astounds you, a testament to the lake's thriving ecosystem.
Paddling upstream, you enter Issaquah Creek. The current carries you gently. And there, by the water's edge, stands a young deer-a delicate creature sipping from the creek. Its eyes meet yours, curiosity mirrored in its gaze. Then, with a graceful leap, it joins you in the water, swimming near your kayak.
You continue your journey, passing Sunset Beach-a golden stretch where families build sandcastles and laughter echoes. Further along, Tibbetts Beach awaits, its kayak rentals inviting beginners and visitors alike. The sun paints the water in warm hues, and you feel at home.
Paddling up Tibbetts Creek, you enter a world of whispers-the rustle of leaves, the gentle babble of water. The kayak glides under overhanging branches, and you glimpse a kingfisher darting by. Tibbetts Creek embraces you, its secrets shared only with those who listen.
The air fills with avian melodies. Eagles soar overhead, their wingspan awe-inspiring. Herons wade gracefully, and ducks paddle alongside you. Each feathered friend adds to the symphony-a chorus celebrating life on the water.
As you return to the boat launch, you reflect. Lake Sammamish State Park isn't just a place-it's an experience. A sanctuary where wildlife thrives, where stories unfold with each stroke of your paddle. You know you've witnessed something magical-the best lake kayaking in the Pacific Northwest for wildlife enthusiasts.
And so, dear adventurer, your kayak glides back to shore, but the memories linger-the painted turtles, the beaver lodge, the enormous fish, and the young deer. Lake Sammamish State Park whispers its secrets, inviting you to return, to listen, and to be part of its wild serenade.

    I live in Seattle and I am heading there tomorrow (June 29, 2024) to kayak. I got Delta 12.10 kayak and was wondering are there any spots on the lake that I should be cautious? I am driving there and I got annual WA Discovery Pass. This will be my first trip to this lake.

      Lake Union or Lake Washington? Of course in lakes no tides or currents so main things to watch for are wind, we like < 5 knots, boat traffic, and cold water shock for which consider a wetsuitbor drysuit. We like paddling along the shore as that's where all the interesting stuff to see is anyway, and it's safer. Hope that helps. Have fun.

      @@PresenceVideography I am heading to Kachess Lake early in the morning. I do the same on lakes, I stay within 150-200 yards from shores for safety. I grew up on water and am a great swimmer, but cold waters can kill quickly no matter how good swimmer one is. I do not wear any wet suits , but of course I always wear a life jacket. I paddle solo since few friends that I got are not into water sports.

    I love that. Thanks. I was looking at some noaa references. It seems the west side of Vashon gets some serious currents. A little less around Blake island. Life jackets for sure. The overnight parking was the best part here. I am never too sure about that.

      We paddle north from Southworth along the shore and then cross over to Blake Island at the shortest channel crossing distance. Paddling this route, we avoid significant currents.

    Nice vid. I wanted to solo camp around some of the islands but there are a lot of comments on different forums and whatnot saying to plan according to tides and currents, which i think is beyond my scope and ability as a beginner. Lots of people mentioning dangerous currents. Guess it's more involved than me showing up in the desert with my dirtbike in my van to do some exploring. I'm opting to just do a guided multi day tour instead. Maybe one day...

    • @PresenceVideography
      @PresenceVideography หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. Yes, currents can be strong around this area. We always plan around currents and tides, and the wind. We don't like to paddle in currents > 1 knot or winds > 5 knots. Paddling at low tide is fun in terms of stuff to look at but be sure to check launch and pullout to avoid mudflats or long walks over rocky beaches. For currents we use deepzoom.com. Not affiliated, it's just a tool we like to use. Have fun. Be safe.

      @@PresenceVideography Yes the video you link is much better for me especially when the camera zooms out a bit and you can see more of the kayak as it moves through the water and over things under the surface. The sequence from 1:25 to 1:30 in the linked video is what I mean, I really like that view. 1:55 - 2:05 is great.

  • @itotallycare
    @itotallycare 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Consider head mounting the camera. With clear water like this and with trees under the surface it's really neat to get to have more of a downward angle and see the things in the water. It's also nice to see more of the bow as the kayak slices through the water as well as seeing the paddle dipping in and out of the water. You also have more control over what's in frame simply by moving your head.

      Absolutely. Nice and sheltered around the bay. There's also lots to see along the shore, especially around low tide. Karen and I paddled along the north shore of the bay, and I then paddled solo out to Charles and Long Island. I would not recommend that last part, paddling out to the islands, for beginners though as the currents around the islands can be a challenge. Check winds before you paddle. We like paddling in the morning and when winds < 5 knots. Have a great paddle. BTW another option is around Spencer Spit which can also be great for beginners. Small but big logistics consideration for your #1: Argosy Cruises surrendered their contract with Wash. State Parks to be the vendor for Tilllicum Village and the Argosy Cruise ferry boat (it's not a government run fast ferry like the West Seattle water taxi) back in 2021. Tillicum Village is basically mothballed both historic building and restaurant vendor including the legendary salmon bake in the long house. That's all closed up until someone else steps up to take the contract to run the food vendor and the ferry. The only access to the island is your own vessel, whatever that may be. Both campsites on either side of the island are still using the same Wash. State Parks reservation system, so just know if you were thinking of taking the Argosy ferry to-from for a walk-on camp on the island, that is not currently available. The result is a much quieter island and only boaters/kayakers are there. Nice overall video production, thank you for that info.

    Fantastic! I've kayaked to Long Island a number of times. Very trick tides between Charles and Long! Before I moved to Lopez I was in video production so I also really appreciate all the work you put into your videos.

    • @PresenceVideography
      @PresenceVideography 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, tricky tides and currents for sure. I also did a paddle nearby on the San Juan Island side through Cattle Point Narrows past Goose Island and currents there can also go higher than 3 knots so careful planning is essential. We hope to visit Lopez Island again soon. Such a beautiful island, and so many amazing kayaking trips still to do.

    HI. I'm a Seattle native, now living in So. Oregon. These fabulous videos will become more and more valuable as time goes by ... for a virtual & vicarious dose of nature. Our precious resources are being destroyed before our eyes. Water is drying up. I like to project these beautiful videos onto a wall or ceiling, and get lost in the serenity of it all. Makes me homesick for Washington. Thank you so much for this video collection. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼👏🏼💕

      @@PresenceVideography Nice! I showed your Diablo Lake 360 video to my uncle who loves sailing and kayaking. I cast it to the TV and he was able to use the remote to pan around. Love the 360 vids, and the regular vids too. I'm moving to the PNW soon and I'm excited to get a long touring kayak and get out on the water!

    Good tip, except you can't shoot 60 fps with quickshots or mastershots. Panning is such a pain in the ass manually too.

      Agreed, nice to have an automated way to take complete smooth 360 pan. We also like the 3D effect you get from the drone moving horizontally around the POV circle vs rotating at a single point.

    • @PresenceVideography
      @PresenceVideography 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Distance is about 1.1 miles so 25m at an average paddling speed. Mornings better for lighter wind. Check lake level before you go: www.usbr.gov/pn/hydromet/yakima/yaktea.html. Mid to late summer it gets low. We recommend spring or early summer.

    Beautiful paddle! I recall years back, before Covid, Tillicum Vilalge put on quite a cultural show with dance and story telling done while dinner was served. Could you tell if that was still going on or is it still shut down?

      Thanks. It shut down during covid and I don't think the show has restarted yet as ferry service to the island hasn't restarted: www.argosycruises.com/blake-island-excursions/. Park and campsites still open though.
