Ive just witnessed an even more egregious decision. The award of the episode featuring a brilliant painting or 2 of Dan Snow was awarded to a dogs breakfast of a portrait of a effete actor with feathers on his chest. They do this all the time because darling they feel they must reward the unusual over likeness. Its a bit vulgar to catch someone's likeness in their world.
Sorry but I can totally see why the judges made the choice they did. Your favorite made a pretty portrait, but the one that was chosen shows a much more mature and confident artist and style. The first one is soft and has no texture. Even the second painting had more character. It's like a pencil artist leaning too heavily on smudging or a digital artist leaning too heavy on the airbrush. Each brush stroke and color of the third painting showed knowledge, confidence, and purpose. You see the artist and know that they are there. While the first painter is certainly talented, I think he has a little growing to do to really wow a judge.
I'm confused. You showed the 3 finalists for this episode. You said all 3 finalists did good work and would be able to handle the commission. You had absolutely no beef with the artist who painted the African American and said specifically, his was a good response and with unlimited time he will probably do a better job than he did under the time constraints. Then you say, "Now here's where I have a problem, we just had 3 strong contestants and you saw them you saw their self portraits and you saw the work that they did today." And then you just go on to complain that they didn't pick your favorite. Which doesn't make much sense to me. By your own admission, the judges had 3 strong artists for their final selection so any of the 3 should have been perfectly acceptable as the winner. The judges had a tough decision to make and they happened to select a strong artist who simply wasn't your personal favorite. That hardly qualifies as the worst judging ever.
You are right. Art is subjective and indeed all three of the finalists really deserved to move forward. I guess that is what I wished would happen. In referring to the judging in general I did not do a great job of comparing the final two artists who did move on . What I should have said was I felt they were put in the same category as the weaker paintings we saw in the episode earlier and that is where I felt there was an injustice. But you are correct the winner deserved to win.
I'm in the middle of watching season 3. I've definitely already seen worse choices that this one. I've just watched episode 5, where they literally chose a very crappy, messy, rather ugly painting with weak likeness, instead of two very original, awesome paintings that had outstanding likeness, physical and emotional.
I think you just might be referring to the edition i saw but then again it happens all quite regularly.I think the painter was called Burlington Bertie.!
@@jomackenzie7065 Hi Jo, you’ve most likely noticed there has been more than once when the outcome of the competition has been fierce and difficult to select; they were all so good! well this is just one of those times when there wasn’t much to choose from according to their mandate. I totally agree the painting you selected was beautiful, but I can see where they might not want to encourage traditional works. And they have their reasons for selecting what they did… being armchair jurors is hard for us, eh? 💗💗
Excellent traditional fin earths not what these judges are looking for, obviously. Sometimes like this the result is so good fine art is the best way to represent a beautiful middle aged woman.
Unique, contemporary portrait...likeness, not so important. The likeness and essence of the sitter's inner person is what should be mandatory. Some of the winners awarded here, looked like they had the soul of a dead duck.
think we have moved from this beautiful type of painting, there is no energy there is no character it is a pretty picture, we should ask more from our artists to look beyond the obvious and paint with some grit!

I think we need to re read the mandate of the program… they are looking for unique and progressive artists, not traditional..
I agree, that is what they are looking for and they have been clear about that. But surely there is a middle ground.

You made me laugh. I may have to quote you on the "Dead Duck" image. Ha!

Good point. Pretty is nice but gritty and even brutal work can have a successful impact in a different way.
What can one say
Speechless . Right?
