  • Because of all of the breeding that's been going on, I need to hook up the third row of tanks on this rack

    I've been looking up fish room ideas and this was very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

    Dear Sir:
    You have a wonderful fish-room. Personally, I’m not a DIY type of aquarist. I prefer hang-on-the-back aquariums and I was very impressed with the air-driven ones that you made.
    I’ve over-done it with my hobby and filled my house with aquariums, only to get over burdened (feeling it was a chore) and giving tanks away. I’ve done this, repeatedly. Purchasing fish and equipment can be addictive. It’s easy to become “spend-thrift” with this hobby. I believe that I now have a nice compromise with only five tanks. I enjoy caring for the fish and aquatic plants and culturing the live foods that I offer.
    Thank you for a very interesting video. I’m super-jealous of you, sir.
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

      Thanks so much for your kind words and continued support. I'm as lazy as the next guy and that's the reason I centrally filter my tanks. I'm planning to build a rack in the new year in the style that I find on TH-cam so I can do side by side comparisons for people who are planning fish rooms. When I build it, it is going to be plumbed so I can easily convert it to central filtration for when my laziness wins out. Have a Merry Christmas.

    thank you, I really enjoy your channel i think it is really cool, I like how you machine your parts, your work is neat too, I would like to offer a suggestion if i might something that ive seen on another channel, you can add a shut off valve at the intake of each tank, if you had sick fish in one of the tanks or if you wanted to isolate one tank from the system for some reason you could cut the water flow and just add a sponge filter temporarily thereby eliminating cross contamination, i hope this helps.

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much! I'm glad you like what I do here. One difference with this system that eliminates the need for valves is that none of the water mixes from tank to tank. They are always isolated from each other.

    I am currently trying to design/build a fish rack for breeding Apistogramma mainly. I was wondering, did you ever make that second video of the "new" rack you spoke about at the beginning? I couldn't find it on your channel?
    Second question - How do you do water changes? Do you just change the direction of your outflow to a drain and then pump in new fresh water?
    I am wanting to setup a centralized filtration just like you have here but I would also like to make it so I can do a weekly water change on all of my tanks with ease. I would appreciate any feedback you could give me of course. Thanks!

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. When I do water changes on this rack, all I do is turn down the outflow elbows and then refill after they have drained the amount I want. I have run both this style and centralized filter systems. I prefer this system. The extra time to do water changes is minimal and I get to control the water quality to individual tanks. With the centralized system they all have the same water and I ended up with fry everywhere. If you go into the fish room playlist there are a number of videos that go into this in more detail. Hope that helps

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've built 4 racks in my fish room this way and to date I have had no issues. I use the 1/2" overflows for water changes only and they are fast enough. Thanks for watching!

    Have a day off from fishing so I'm able to watch right away. Very helpful!! Couldn't see what you used on the inside of the tank that you screwed onto the outflow pvc? Is it screened?

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The inside piece is a 1/2" threaded female adapter. The screen for it is a piece of drilled 1/2' pipe as with the upper row at the beginning of the video. I plan on doing a complete build for a fish rack in the near future and you will be able to see the whole process.

      No problem. How's the fishing been this "sort of" summer?

    • @JimHanleyfishing
      @JimHanleyfishing 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fishman very frustrating indeed. I've been catching enough to keep clients happy but not what I'm used to. For the first time ever, walleye have been easier to catch then smallmouth. Lost 20 days due to wind and thunderstorms...that hurt but hopefully the fall will be better and I can make up some lost ground. Even thought that hurt it's nothing compared wot what's going in Houston. Heading down in 2 weeks to help out those poor souls who've lost everything.

    Was sch 80 your first choice?, did you already do the air one you spoke of?, and mentioned some of the glass might be to old to drill, never heard of that. Here’s one,years ago made tanks out of various 50s and 60s care windows, still have some, that plastic sandwhich was a life saver on more than one occasion!

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glass exposed to water does get more brittle with age and can crack. If you take care you can drill and cut it it but it is more of an effort. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts on this
