Someone probably already told you this, but there were supposed to be the female backup singers that you were expecting, but they got tied up in the traffic mess trying to get there, so the musicians on the stage did their best to do the backup vocal parts.

I was so lucky to have seen Joe Cocker twice, once in 1974 in Macon, GA. He was so drunk, he sang the whole concert lying on his back on the stage. Still a better performer than your average bear. The second time was June 15, 1990 at the Benson & Hedges Blues Festival in Atlanta, GA: the lineup was Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Joe Cocker, BB King & Stevie Ray Vaughan. To this day, it remains the best live music I've ever heard. Another great song written by Randy Newman & performed by Joe Cocker is "You Can Leave Your Hat On." Love you guys!! Keep on rockin'.

If you listened to the album version, the person who played the blistering opening guitar notes and electric guitar throughout was none other than Jimmy Page. While Jimmy was working on recording Zeppelin's first album, he went back to the studio to play on the session for this song. As others have mentioned, this song was originally done by the Beatles. As a session musician, Jimmy also played on the instrumental version of the Beatles song "This Boy" that plays during the scene of Ringo walking around by himself in the Beatles movie "A Hard Day's Night".

One dark night Joe was heading for a gig, a landslide had covered the road in huge granite boulders 10 ft high. Joe decided he couldn't let the audience down and to make it to the gig on time he chewed through the huge boulders and cleared the road. He made it to the gig on time. Some of that gravel stayed in his throat and gave him that wonderfully gritty voice. One of the few men known to have his soul in his vocal cords. Love the reaction guys!

His first album featured a recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends", which brought him to near-instant stardom. The song reached number one in the UK in 1968, became a staple of his many live shows (Woodstock and the Isle of Wight in 1969, the Party at the Palace in 2002) and was also known as the theme song for the late 1980s American TV series The Wonder Years. He continued his success with his second album, which included a second Beatles song: "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window".

As you observed, Cocker was basically a covers artist. WALHFMF, You Are So Beautiful, The Letter, and my favorite, Feeling Alright (written by Steve Winwood). Cocker put his imprint on his covers, and IMO his cover of Feeling Alright transforms and improves it. He may have sung his own songs, but I can't think of any.
Cocker had a history of drunken, out of control performances, and John Belushi parodied him to his face during his performance on Saturday Night Live.

This was one of the last songs that Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote together (at Paul's house). It's sung by Ringo Starr on "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. When Joe covered it, I think it was Paul who said he owned it now. Artists and groups routinely covered cuts on the Beatles albums (the Beatles kept their singles tracks separate from their albums) and released them as singles themselves. Earth, Wind & Fire, for example, covered "Got To Get You Into My Life" off the "Revolver" album and had a hit single with it in the 1970s.

I saw him a month after this performance. No one ever came close to singing like Ray Charles...but Joe came damn close.

Joe cocker’s backup singers didn’t make it to the show because of the mess of trying to get to Woodstock. Thousands of cars were abandoned on the roads leading to the venue. Most of the acts were flown in via helicopter. Also I believe this show is an edited version, many are. Sometimes you can find the full video sometimes not.

It cracks me up how you guys relate the music I grew up with to the tv shows you grew up with. There’s probably some kind of social commentary there but it’s beyond me. Great song choice, btw.

Damn! Talk about leaving it all on stage! You could feel that! Where is that passion in music today? OK maybe a little bit of it was tweaking but still a lot of passion lol

It’s a shame that you didn’t hear the version with his regular backup singers, but he still shines here. If you revisit him, please react to “THE LETTER”; it’s fire!

Plan everybody first saw him at Woodstock we all thought that he had some kind of disability the way he moved. Just to find out that's just Joe Cocker.

Mad dog and Englishman Joe Cocker sang, played air guitar, air drums, air keyboard… his whole body was a musical instrument. Please react to: Joe Cocker - You Can Leave Your Hat On (Official Video) HD
