  • In this episode, I outline a fairly calamitous event that's befallen the pond, apologies for the somewhat melodramatic intro, but I was feeling a little fed up when I made it!

    Gutting. Defo an otter. Use an electric fence like they do at fisheries n dig it into the ground 👍🐟

      I'm not going the leccie route, mainly cos of my dumb ol' cats, but also cos I've seen too many herons and otters get round it given enough desperation for food

    So sorry to see and hear this Andy absolutely gutted for you please dont stop or fill in the pond, love to watch and follow your content, its hard to believe that they could take fish of such a size and leave nothing visible behind, I hope you find some kind of solution for the protection side of things, if they is anything, we can do please do let us know, all the best the GKP

      THanks Gaz, really appreciate it - I think they've managed to clear it all out cos it was almost 2 weeks that Xmas, weather and Covid meant I'd not looked at the pond and they were able to visit repeatedly at night and snack away. LIke @MrShingles22 said down below I think not finding them dead/ripped apart is actually easier in a way

    This is my worst nightmare, 100% otter by the evidence, you’d be surprised how quickly cats and rats etc clear up dead fish. I’m looking to move on some VS carp soon, they aren’t massive 30cm plus I guess, you welcome to have them for free if you aren’t a million miles away.

    Sorry to hear whats happened,I enjoyed watching your carp so much I added a mirror carp to my koi.If it was me I wouldnt do too much to the pond but concentrate on the fence.Its usualy not hard to get used paving slabs so I would dig under the fence and gate on all sides and have upright slabs under it,they wont get through them.All the best.Oh I got my carp from carpco.

    That's such a shame, it's probably good you didn't find any remains, that would make it worse. Some decent steel wire dug or pegged in or some dug in gravel boards may stopped them getting under. And if you were worried about over the fence which would be a far less likely, you could add those stick on spikes they use to stop pigeons nesting

    • @TheGingerPondkeeper
      @TheGingerPondkeeper  ปีที่แล้ว

    Not a solution everyone will like but if you put stainless mesh hook it up to a car battery just enough to give it a lil shock and put it off hopefully. My uncle was cleared out but been ok since electric fence added.

    Terrible thing to happen .& Obviously upsetting don't give up looks an amazing natural pond the best way is galvanized mesh buried quite deep either around fence perimeter and or pond . If you didn't have cats I would recommend an equine / cattle electric fence system. We have them and proper otter fences around the l 6 acre pool I fish after we had a similar experience . And cost the club thousands to replace the 25lb + fish the otters left uneaten

  • @davidmunden7708

    Had a relative in Pembrokeshire have the same experience with a Koi Pond completely wiped out many years ago . He just stopped keeping fish as a result. He has a stream running through his land and very close to the beach so only option would be steel mesh which is not aesthetically pleasing in a beautifully landscaped garden.
    In your situation I think I would concentrate on running a concrete footing around the inside of the perimeter fence creating a sealed compound .

    • @davidmunden7708
      @davidmunden7708 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition to that I would consider Velda electric fence that would sit quite discretely inside your netting fence. I find Velda laser detector works well as a Heron deterrent on my ponds and are good quality products.

    • @davidmunden7708
      @davidmunden7708 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t let this setback make you do away with the pond whilst your deliberating the way forward I would keep night camera running and why don’t you put 2-4 young carp in that will establish themselves in time.(Otter Permitting)
      That way you can carry on running filter system and keep doing what you are doing.

    So sorry Andy, absolutely devastated for you. I'd be more than happy to donate some money to help with the either the build work or the restock. Go fund me, patreon or however... I like your attitude to the whole situation despite how tough this must be, absolute class sir. Keep your head up mate and hope you can find a solution to suit your garden & pond. All the best. Oh my word... I am actually so gutted to hear that and I am so sorry you've had to experience this. Can't believe it. To make it cheaper, probably galvanised heavy duty mesh rather than steal. I would be underground so not contaminating your pond water. I had to do this at another property as we had badgers digging deep. I got some rolls of fence mesh, tick one, and dug a trench all around the garden, along the fence side and back (I had a wall on the right side), put it up right coming out of the ground by 20cm and fixed the mesh against all the fence panels. Had to warn the neighbours obviously so they would never take out the fence panels and replace them without me being there. and that cured the problem. Hope you can do that. The rolls of heavy duty mesh are about £30 for 10 metres long. I think it's called Euro fence as it's what we use in Europe instead of fence panels, they are green

    • @TheGingerPondkeeper
      @TheGingerPondkeeper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot Lau, that mesh sounds a great idea thank you so much

    • @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
      @LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGingerPondkeeper I was thinking, you can do that as well around the pond as you have the posts already in place. And the mesh is green so you won't see it unless close to it. Otters can climb a bit but, if you get the 1.2. high for the pond, you can put some underground and what you can also do it bend the top outward so if the otters climb, they wouldn't be able to climb above that bit of mesh sticking out if that makes sense. I do that with my enclosure for my tortoise as they climb. Once she is at the top, the mesh is bend 90 degrees and she can go above. You can do that but the other way around to keep the otters out.

    Awww man I'm so sorry to hear this 😢 there a bugger them otters very difficult to stop them I hope you manage to sort it 🙏 also I know you said you didn't want any tench but I have a couple of small tench that need a new home you could have there about 4 or 5 inches

    • @TheGingerPondkeeper
      @TheGingerPondkeeper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, appreciate it. I'm probably not going with tench again, just cos I found that as the rudd got bigger between them and the carp the tench really struggled to get to the food, and my old one was looking pretty skinny as a result

      He's the only one I think might have made it other than the rudd fry, he has a great hiding spot inside a big fold and if he had the time he might have made it

    Gutted for you mate. It's heartbreaking seeing or knowing predators have taken your fish. I got terrorised by a heron last spring and I actually saw him take off with my sterlet in his mouth. Please don't fill your pond in, it's too nice a pond/setup to not see fish in there

    The way to stop an otter .. and you're half way there as you already have posts dig a trench 8 to 12 inches deep round the pond and put small hole chicken wire round the perimeter of the pond attach to the posts and that should do it

    • @TheGingerPondkeeper
      @TheGingerPondkeeper  ปีที่แล้ว
