chili with beans is a meal chili without beans is a topping but both are chili. i loved hearing about your time as a child with your mom and coffee time. it made me really miss my grandma because my mom had to work she was the one who got to do those sorts of things with me. and she passed away 13 and a half years ago. mom tries to do stuff with me and my kids now but she couldn't when i was younger.

I am a Texan. I put beans (pinto, Ranch-Style, black, or chili beans) in my chili to make the chili go further and add more protein. I also sometimes put corn. Serve it with Fritos, sliced jalapeño, grated mild cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese. For our taco salad, we mix Pace Picante Sauce with Catalina (or Russian) dressing.
My husband lived in Texas for awhile and they always put beans in their chili. Love hearing the story of your family sitting around singing and doing outings together. We use to do this before my mom passed away 10 years ago. I miss it.

Born in Texas, so my Texas heart says no, however growning up military in Germany we didn't always have access to a lot of meat and sometimes you need beans to stretch the meal. We also served our soups, stews, and chili with a side of bread or a bun as you like to have to stretch the meal. I also grew up during the Vietnam War, so my experiences are different then yours. I think as long as your family enjoys it, it's all good!

Pro beans!!!!! I also grew up putting it over rice. When I became an adult I found out it was to stretch it because we didn’t have any extra money. I never knew that because we always had good food in my opinion. Beans and rice were to stretch it but I love chili this way. I’m 70 now and my husband learned to put it over rice from me and he never wants it any differently.
That's actually a good story. My mom always put chili over spaghetti. When I learned that nobody else did that I was shocked! Then I learned that there is such a thing as Cincinnati Skyline Chili (apparently it has cinnamon in it!) and it is typically served on spaghetti. So we weren't so weird after all. Lol
The hot sandwiches would have to be pizza subs in our house. My whole family loves them! Just cheese on the bread so it doesn't get soggy the peperoni, then sauce on the inside and maybe a sprinkle of grated parm and/or oregano over the sauce before closed up. Yum. Thanks for chatting. I had some subs leftover and had them this week! I thawed them a bit and then put them in my air fryer, still in the foil! They were toasty and cheesy and good! Not as good as Subway V Cut subs in the 90s but pretty darned good! lol
I will eat chili with out beans, but I will pout in protest! Why does food taste so much better when you are camping? I make sandwiches by the dozens.I wrap them and keep them in the fridge. You're a nice Canadian lady and you could never do "bad things". I was a teenager in the late 1970s , so I know from bad things!
How long does the Costco jar of Parmesan cheese last before it goes bad? I bought a chunk of it to grate. How long will it last after grating? Should I add cornstarch to it to prevent caking? I thought of freezing it in measured mounds which I could use as needed. What size mounds would you suggest?
It's a hard cheese so it will last longer than cheddar/havarti/Gouda or soft cheeses like Brie. You could shred it and freeze it in 1 cup measurement if you want. I don't think you need to put cornstarch in. Because it's a low-moisture cheese, it will not stick together the same way other cheeses do. Good luck!
My kids do not like kidney beans or black beans or any other beans apart from baked beans so I have always made my chili with baked beans. Im in the UK and i dint think its considered a bad thing here.
i’m from the midwest US and i say NO BEANS but only because i hate them 😁 growing up chili always had beans. if i make it, i leave those nasty suckers out. my mom used to make a big pot of ham and beans (the smell still makes me gag) and i would fill the biggest glass i could find with milk and swallow the beans whole 😂
@FreezerMeals101 shenendoah river state park( virginia) it was a group event/outing so I just took food for me... almost none of the planned food was compatible for me :( so I just did me! They were all very jealous of my bacon and eggs while they had oatmeal... 😆
