@207Param Thank you! Your comment is the most sensible here. Finally someone who loves animals. I still haven't watched earthlings and I don't think I can...
The sprays contain black dye. Better quality leather is drum dyed, so the color runs right through. It is easy to quick check by looking at the back of the leather, but sometimes this can be sprayed. The only way to completely check is to look at a cut edge of the leather

I worked years on the kill floor... in the 1980s The Cow dies by spike gun by a human. If the Cow has a broken leg it is taken off the kill floor to be shot and killed by a piston and a bullet... Why? I do not know why... I just never asked. This cow will not be eaten by human. The cow is hooked up on a chain line with many sharp hooks it's cowhide is then separated by hooks on a production Assembly.. Is it not pretty. Sometimes a Rabbi would sacrifice a Cow with his machete blade once a month... He would pick the best cow, then the Rabbi would say his prayers and in almost of an agreement he killed the cow. The sacrifaced Cow would bleed and fall suddenly to sleep... Dead... I never saw a Cow suffering at the hands of this Rabbi. Ever. Again that hide would come off the blessed cow as part of the assembly line. (Still with me?) All he hides with fat and blood would be sent by chain and hooks to be released in a concrete dungeon like space. I would cut a hole through the hide and hook the hide on a other hook and belt and the hides would collect in a dump truck parked out side and taken to a Hide Processing Plant. The Cowhides would be placed in huge tubes of hides holding up to 1750 Cowhides in 3 pools of water mixed with salt and warm temperatures. All hides would be hooked on razor sharp hooks, trimmed, fleshed, graded and palletized. At the speed of 7.5 seconds per hide. Wages were between $8.50 to $12.50 per hour after 150 hides graded premiums were 25 cents hide. Money was good but you worked for it. This company does not exist it folded in 1991.
i like the videos but i think it would be awsome if they compared new techniques to old ones , and buy old ones , i mean they used to have to do every thing by hand and now days its is alot easier because of machinery ... it would be nice to know how to make leather from animal hides with out modern technology
Naa, it's not the same. Most fur comes from animals that are killed SOLELY for their fur, and usually it's done in cruel and painful ways when the animal is STILL ALIVE. The rest of the animal is discarded and wasted. Most leather comes from cattle which are killed for meat anyway, so it makes sense to use every part of the animal as possible so nothing is wasted. The animal is almost always killed in a humane and painless way. The other body parts are also used and little is wasted.
Well we saw the black buffalo in india for expensive black leather and were worried hides from normal meat processing plants here was wasted so is it suede its a type not necessarily from sheep? So but we dnt wana buy that black leather anymore we think there not always barren finished cows its just whats worth more n no way for anything as holy dim as a sofa
@xdurlife in 3rd world countries, yes. however, there are many ways to tan leather. there is even a process which uses the brains of the animal in question, which sounds gross, is gross. you can use almost anything acidic to break down the hide proteins but be careful, your hands are also leather too...make sure you have a neutralizer to stop the acid after you reach the texture you want.

Not true. (And also, what kind of argument is that?) Because of my peculiar taste-and because I'm a designer-i make my own clothes/get my clothes done by others. I usually import my materials, and combined with the cost of making something from my design that is unconventional; I spend more money on a jacket then the price of two average leather jackets. At least. :)
came straight here from a video about binding books with human skin. didn't even think about how creepy that was until I read the comments about animal cruelty and was like "nah leave the animals alone, but plz make me into a book someday"
OK, if you say so. :) Far superior? We established that it's not more expensive. To establish something like this; you'd have to argument that statement. I'm all ears. :)
Better reproduce a lot of cows that produce CH4 which is a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2 and in the process, torture them and kill them. Sure, it sounds better.
+TheCommenter71 Leather is the product of an industry that is responsible for half the worlds greenhouse emissions. "Polluting factories" don't even compare.
It depends on the type of the leather and the type of animal that has been used, i guess. There certainly are ecofriendly leathers. Bark tanning in its most basic form simply requires bark or some other natural material that contains enough tannins then some oil or fat and lime or ash. People have made leather for thousands of years in a very ecofriendly form. They only required things like ash, bark, leaves, oil or just the animals brain and some wood for smoking.
A lot of things involve a lot of chemicals and processes. What did you expect? That leather is just shaved cowhide? You should probably lay off modern medicine too. Lots of chemicals in there.

Sitting on a three seater leather sofa right now, soooo comfy :)
watch how cows are skinned alive just to be made into leather and tell us how comfy that is
very comfy
Most cows aren't skinned alive so that statement is just misleading.
