In 1984, Jermaine Stewart became the third former Soul Train dancer to become a recording artist along with his friends Jody Watley and Jeffery Daniel who would later have huge success with the group Shalamar. But it wasn't until 1986 when Stewart had his biggest hit with this song. In the same year, he would release a song called "Jody" in dedication to Jody Watley.

Jermaine Stewart was very talented back in the day...He died way too soon...A great singer and dancer....When this song came out my youngest child was 7 years old and he used to walk around all day singing the chorus of this song.

Jermaine Stewart was a Soul Train dancer and choreographer before hitting it big with this song in 1986! He had another hit called Jody which was said to be about singer, Jody Watley! Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels were in Shalamar but Jermaine Stewart was not! Jermaine tried out for Shalamar but lost out to Gary Mumford! Jody and Jeffrey were the first Soul Train dancer to record (in Shalamar). on the Soul Train label (co-owned by Don Cornelius) in the seventies!

Ironically, Jermaine Stewart died from AIDS related cancer in 1997 at the young age of (Edit: Thanks Chris) 39. It was on the charts in 1987. But had a longer then most singles "shelf life" as it continued to get plenty of radio play into 1988...

So sad as in 1997 the first "good" medications were just recently available. But ofcourse not for everyone. In my country we got it for free but I'm sure in the US it would have been REALLY expensive and by that time Jermaine was totally broke. Even lived in his car for a while apparently.....RIP Jermaine

Many people had just heard about AIDS a year before this came out in 1986... This was a song in hopes of changing minds about sexual activity; in the late 80s AIDS was ALWAYS a death sentence, not much was known, and communities were DECIMATED by this disease... I remember this time well... It was scary and much misinformation was spread. I commend Jermaine for making A BANGER discouraging sex until you know someone... He really was trying to change society with this!!! Love you guys!! ❤

This song was released May 1986. Believe it or not, there are some men who don't want sex right away. My ex-husband was a devout Catholic and adamant about waiting to have sex until we were married. We dated for one year, engaged for two years and we did wait until our wedding night! We were in our early 30's at the time.
