As someone who went through GT 1-4 getting gold on all of the licences, I feel your pain, especially on that 9th attempt with the Demio where the back wheels are half a mm off the finish.
Doing it on the controller is like locking yourself in your own personal hell LOL
I grew up with Gran Turismo 1-4 also. I always had to have gold because that's the type of gamer I am. I somehow didn't struggle with the Demio and even to this day I refuse to use the controller for Gran Turismo. I feel the controller gives me a huge advantage. The wheel makes it so much better.
@@engineerkentgaming1371 I don't think you can use the driving wheel in GT1 and 2. As far as I know, that option was available only from 3 and subsequently games.
There use to be several wheels for the PS1. The ones I had where made by Pelican and Cobra. One was branded Gran Turismo 2 and the Gamestop version had gas and brake pedals. @@paulocarvalho6480
@@paulocarvalho6480 There were 3rd party wheel and pedals available for PS1 that you could use for GT 1 and 2. I remember we had one as a kid. It was absolute crap and I just went back to using controller. It was back before force feedback was even really a thing, so using it was really difficult. (My dad was really into the games at the time, so he got the wheel and pedals hoping it would be better)
I remember going back to GT1 years later and unlocking the high res mode. Totally blew me away.
It's wild how silky smooth the hi-fi mode is compared to the base game, it was almost like playing a different game entirely
I literally did this a week ago for the first time ever and I was also blown away by it. I can't imagine how incredible that would've been to unlock all those years ago!

Looks like you're playing it on a real PS1 but back in the day people played it on a CRT which smoothed the picture so you didn't get pixellation like what you're getting because you're playing it on an LCD TV. Use something such as a RetroTink with your modern TV as it upscales and smoothes the picture. Or play on an emulator where you can go up to 4K getting much better graphics and anti-aliasing and widescreen!
man back when GT1 came out i was too young to appreciate the actual legends you drive in that game
NSX, RX 7, Supra mk4, Skyline, Lancer and so on, the classic JDM cars that still look better than most modern cars today
Yep - it was the same for me, too. So many gorgeous cars that kid me was just like "oh cool" and I went on my way. Now I'd love to see an R34, NSX, etc. in person!
i feel the exact same way, them cars are like my childhood heroes so to say
i still pump the occasional GT1 Soundtrack, like the TVR Dealership OST or the Subaru Dealership OST while delivering packages at work :D
What some people dont realize is that GT was made BEFORE dual shock. Digital inputs only. And they were twitchy. There was a steering wheel availible, but it was not good. Luckily, Mad Catz made a dual shock controller later that had a mode to emulate the steering wheel controller with the sticks.
I played the heck out of GT and GT2 on PS1. I even got a Viper GTS-R in White with Green stripes in GT.
I played GT2 to death on the PS1, it's one I have a lot of fond memories of - GT7 handles controller inputs so much better, it's hard to believe it's the same company. I thought about buying a terrible old wheel to make this work LOL
both analog sticks worked tho, i know for sure because i used them for proper throttle/streering input.
Some of those original driving games, you could stay on the gas and tap the brakes to shave off some speed without disrupting the car’s balance.
I think it was GT2 that had the Chrysler concept car that was the fastest car in any race.
I think the Normal cup has to be the hardest method to do this.
Im sure you could have worked a prize to win the Anglo Japanese championship, then the Cerbra LM desimates all
I'm glad there are challenge runs of this game and GT2. You did a pretty good job. :)
Regarding the controls, I recommend adjusting the controls in the options menus so the either the left or right thumbsticks would be used for accelation/brake and the shoulder buttons (e.g L1 and R2 for shifting in manual transmission). So that way it'll be easier to corner and to have modulation regarding accelation and braking. 😁
Thank you! The control suggestion is interesting, I don't know if I could bring myself to do that, but it makes a lot of sense, you can have that fine adjustment with the sticks (I think that's how old school steering wheels did their inputs, using the PS's stick movement values)
GT2 is next! I'm cranking up the difficulty for the next one :)
Left stick for steering, right stick up and down for accelerator/brake.
@@blainy-o93 This works ok, but If you want to have full control, then use right stick up for accelerate and left for brake. With this mapping you could even execute "right foot braking" techniques for old turbo cars that have lots of turbo lag, and/or to stabilize under braking. Also, if you use emulator on PC, you can even remap the up-left acc-brake to R2/L2(RT/LT) and be able to use newer playstation and xbox controllers or alike, so you can use the triggers as analog inputs, like current racing games do. For this you will need a controller at least from ps3/xbox360 era or newer. If you stick on using ps1 and ps2 layout controllers, then only acc-brake on right stick is available as alternative to digital buttons. In addition, in many ps2 games the face buttons are pressure sensitive if using the dualshock 2, giving better control than the digital buttons but is not in par with any full analogue input.
A4 license test in GT1 is still to this day the hardest license test in any GT game.
The prize cars for all Gold in A and IA are all you need to beat the game though.
That whole thing was brutal, especially on controller - I hadn't thought of trying to beat GT1 without spending any credits at all when I tried it in GT2, I might have to go back and give it a (very, very painful) whirl
What was the prize again? Was it the Suzuki Pikes Peaks?

A license reward was the TRD 3000GT
IA was the Nismo 400R
There's Escudo in gt2 but it isn't that fast as in gt3 and won't do a wheelie.

As a person who has 100% GT1 including getting all license golds without guides, I can absolutely agree that B-3 is the hardest gold to get in the B License.
On other words I didn't believe at first that a Dodge Concept Car could take on the Normal Car Championship. I needed a Dodge Viper for it myself.
On other other words I believe this challenge could easily be expanded into a No Money challenge. Although it depends on one single thing. That being the possibility of the Supra winning the GT Cup. Because then, the LM Chaser that you get from it can be used in US vs Japan Championship which can get you an FTO LM Edition, a stupidly overpowered car that can easily demolish any event.
The no money idea didn’t come about until GT2 but I might go back and try it for GT1
As for the concept car, I needed a specific lineup of opponents for that, which GT1 allows doe with restarting the races 😈 but it is possible!
So interesting to hear people play old games and being shocked what “didn’t exist” back in those days.

Watched your GT2 no buying or upgrading video and just had to check this one out too, didn't realise how small your channel is! Really like the content (although maybe splitting it into 20/30 min parts might be more digestible).
Thank you! :) I have thought about that - most of the feedback I had received before, folks seemed cool with the longer videos as it's something they could just put on while they're doing something else. I don't think there's a way to please everyone there, though I acknowledge maybe breaking it into smaller pieces is probably the superior choice in the future. I will definitely keep that in mind!
It's great seeing you get into the original Gran Turismo. I remember going for all golds when this game was released, there were no TH-cam videos of course but the game actually has built-in demos for all the license golds - some might not be the best though but they were a lifesaver when Internet wasn't widely available (with dialup it took a while just to load single images lol). I enjoyed all these fictional tracks, they're really well designed and I miss the tracks that got left behind, Gran Turismo 2 has a lot of great tracks that never appear again. I miss qualifying in the races, I used to like doing it to start in first place and then blocking cars behind me. You have really great commentary!

It's crazy how much GT2 improves on GT1, I've started my challenge run of it and GT2 is so much better in virtually every single way. I really wish some of the tracks from these older games had made it to GT7. Still some hope that they will, but we'll see.
I always felt like the game had some weird qualification calculator to make the AI faster in quali than in the race, but I have no proof of that haha - back in the day, it wasn't beneath me to use the AI as a guardrail XD - can't do that now though, feels wrong.
This game looked like real life when it came out 😂
Don't do qualifying to judge if your car can win the racing event. The computer always does super human qualifying times but drives much slower in the actual event apart from maybe the final race in a series where the computer drives fast.
You should have gotten gold on IA licences... it gives the Nismo 400R, makes the challenge a lot easier
I did consider that as an option, would've taken me an eternity on controller though, it's brutal when you've spent the last couple years on a wheel XD
@@djbrohawk let me tell ya... if you grinded B3 and got it... you'll pass IA easily... the only one that will give you any trouble is IA-1...

In GT1 you can have analog steering, acceleration and braking if you use a NegCon controller. If playing on emulator like Bizhawk, you can choose a controller in emulation options.
I did a Prize Car challenge in GT1 a few years ago.
I got 1:18.500 on B-8
But as you mentioned, you need to maintain your speed for tests like B-3, the key is getting the line just right on that corner.
But yeah, that test is hard.
You want to be doing about 113km/h or 72mph up that hill.
The Dodge Concept Cars proper name is "Dodge Copperhead"
It was an actual concept car Dodge was planning on releasing.
It was to be kinda like a Mini Viper, less power, cheaper.
But the car is pretty damn good overall.
Good power and lightweight as well.
It can easily pole and win each sunday cup race.
Which nets you an extra 4,500 for all qualis, 9,000 for all races and 15,000 for the championship.
The best car for normal cup is Nismo 400R which is the prize car for getting Gold in International A license
I used the Nismo 400R for Sunday Cup, Normal Cup, Clubman Cup, GT World Cup, 4WD Cup and Hard Tuned Cup.
I don't know who this might help, if you use the Auto transmition, you can hold a shift button and rev well past redline. In a pinch it shups by it self, but if you want to push past redline just hold the upshift button.

My best method for the braking tests was to use the lap timer as my course marker.
Check the Controller Settings, there you can configure Acc. and Break to the right Analog Stick.
Then i remember when i played it back in the day, pressing L3 or R3 or together will show up a racing Line in the License tests.

I played so much of this game as a kid. Good times.
I've enjoyed revisiting these games a lot. Watching GT evolve over a period of a few months as opposed to two decades has been really fun for me
These games are so brutal compared to more recent GT, i failed several times on the first few braking missions. I felt like an idiot.
This game in particular whooped me repeatedly on the license tests. I just finished the GT3 video and it feels like the licenses are slowly getting easier haha
It's a wonderful challenge!! I'd like to see the gt world championship too, but it's great as it is. I think if you won only the 3 championship in the gt series, you can win gt world championship with the gt cup prize car. I think that's hard but not impossible
I hadn't considered trying a no money challenge until after I'd finished this video. I might have to revisit it for this game in the future :)
@@djbrohawk I didn't pretended a no money challenge, because I think that there isn't a normal prize car which can win the gt cup, and also that normal cars can't win any of the region vs region challenges either.

ps1/2/3 have analogue face buttons so if you're emulating it you could possibly have swapped X and square to the triggers and possibly had analogue acceleration.
I played this game for months before getting a memory card. I just raced enough to get to race a nice car for a while. So, I raced that darn Demio even in my dreams. I don't wanna sound old cranky but well, yeah, why not? Back in those days tough was fun. Licenses I guess were for GT what fatalities were for MK. They were madness sometimes. I loved this video because you brought all that back. OMG, when you have to start over just to step a bit out of track or when you lose a Cup for one mistake in the last race. Most under 25 today would quit within the hour or rather buy everything with a credit card. I myself can't be sure if I would endure playing this game again.
The licenses were brutal to get all gold in this - with an old PS1 controller, too, it made for a really difficult assignment haha

Good thing you watch a guide lol. I'm watching you trying to get gold I'm face palming lol. I was getting these all gold as a kid. Yes even ia and later game s and rallys. Im not nimber 1 in the world but the first ever gt academy I was ranked 47. For a short time at the end of it all u was still rank 63. Though I don't play gt much anymore. Its hard cause it was mine and my dads most played games and gt7 was the last game we ever played together. So I tried to play it a few times but its still hard. Also the concept car fully tuned is the best car in gt1. Best gripe and its super light with lots of hp.

Would be a nice comparison if you emulate these games on pc and use any compatible modern steering wheel to just try how it compares to the controller.
i wonder if it was normal for racing gamers of the era,
since i never played TOCA either in arcade or on PC my sample size is litle but there are few simcade as they are called nowdays:
Geoff Carmmond's F1 games quartet,
Collin McRae Rally,
Sega Raly,
V-rally
and than more arcade-y things like Test Drive and NFS.
i particularly ask because i remember horrifically struggling with those as well as some parts of the original driver (that is PC driver not the console - better draw distance meaning i am worse than game expects)
About Special Stage Route 5 and 11 coming back to newer GTs:
Tokyo Expressway has replaced them for good. GT is Polyphony's celebration of car culture and the SSRs were their homage to the illegal street racers of Tokyo. However nowadays they look a lot more like race circuits dressing up as urban highways, rather than an expressway turned makeshift race track.
Tokyo Expressway in GT Sport/7 meanwhile is an exact replica of the actual roads these Japanese Tuners would drive their cars on. The pits located at that hairpin (right at the on/off ramps of the expressway) are an actual car park, where people meet up before going for a ride.
So it's not about good racing or having the rights to the track. It's instead about what the point of the SSRs was in the first place and that Tokyo Expressway is a way better realisation of that.
Makes sense to me - I spent many hours in the arcade playing games like Wangan Midnight, similar idea there if you've never played those. That's really cool though, wasn't sure how accurate those roads were - nice homage to the car park where folks would meet up too! :)

You seem to like Route11 track. Try doing the Yaris/ Vitz race car reverse race. It's completely bonkers. The AI tries to get rid of you from the start. It's still the one race I've never finished.

Are you playing on console? The way to play if you're on emulator is go into settings in GT1 and change gas/break to the right analogue stick and then into the emulator controller settings and bind L2 and R2 as R3 up and R3 down in emulator. (then rebind shift up/down accordingly) Makes it a lot easier to control the throttle and braking.
I used Duckstation. I thought about changing all that but just elected not to. I did use the right stick in the GT4 run, though!

I did that challenge myself on the start of the year, and it was fun, not buying a single car and actually using every prize car.

The original game was pretty stingy with its prize cars. I remember being quite shocked and pleasantly surprised when I got a prize car for bronze in the licence tests in GT2.
I don't like racing games but I do like challenges!

Well, technically I also got Driver II Special Edition, but I worked for Inforgrames at that time and every 37.5h you worked, you got a free game and that's why I had that. Never unsealed it though.

I am surprised that you go the hard route of doing the normal car cup with the concept car instead of tuning the concept car so it can win the camaro from the clubman cup.
I thought about that honestly, but when I (recorded, but didn't put into this) looked into all the upgrades for it, they were a little underwhelming. It might've worked, but I think I mentioned this in the video, if I upgraded it and it didn't work out, the challenge would become significantly harder, as I'd have to do all golds for the A license (and you saw how much I struggled with B haha) - I can't remember what you can and can't install/uninstall on the car, and I felt like I COULD win the normal cup

It pained me to see you quit out of SSR11 after only half of a lap on that track. Qualifying times don't mean anything in this game. The AI is almost always much slower than it's qualifying time. You even made that observation in your commentary over your 2nd attempt at SSR11.
I would like to see "without spending money" for this game. Get Supra and RM it was anticlimactic. That's just a normal playthrough at that point. I'm glad the first thing you said on your GT2 video was that this one was too easy.
I thought about that - I might revisit it once I'm done running through the ones I want to run through but I have a sneaking suspicion THAT will be exceptionally difficult

If you don't want to make it 100% you can, I've done it myself, but you can't make it 100% because of the manufacturer races.
The super niche races make these challenges super annoying, but sometimes you can weasel your way through them with the right chain of prize cars

Yeah - the d-pad felt better to me in this - i did notice lifting off seemed to bleed a lot of speed in this and GT2

Why not play this on an emulator? If you do, you can play it in 4K and with a wheel.
Unfortunately my wheel is an unrecognized foreign object on Duckstation XD - I elected to play it with controller to make the challenge harder. I would've probably crushed it on a proper wheel setup since I'm used to that

I watched wrestling many years ago (mid 2000s) and so I'm familiar with the name but couldn't tell you what he sounds like. Pretty cool compliment to me though :)
The AI was bad in GT1 but at least it was fun. On GT7 it's bad and boring
GT7's really doesn't feel like racing, it feels like an extended version of those "Make the pass" missions - the old games, they at least tried even if their racing lines were terrible LOL

I would like to point out back when the PS1 / PS2 controllers came out Sony developed the face buttons (cross, square, circle and triangle) to be pressure sensitive, sadly we lost that in the PS3 controllers and newer gen. That is why the game defaulted to cross and square as the accelerator and brake buttons, as if you pressed them lightly, the car accelerated lightly, same with the brake.
(EDIT: Small spelling correction)
I had no idea they did that for PS1 controllers. I do remember that for PS2 controllers but I could never master it, I always felt like you had to *barely* press the button to get it to not be full throttle/brake and young me didn't have time for that
Then they switched to the triggers and IMO the world was made better for it haha
Pressure sensitive buttons were introduced in DS2, and that was the only controller to have them. The original digital PS1 controller, dual analog and dualshock all had just regular digital buttons

You really should do your homework before even starting the console/emulator. That way, you have a clear map and no surprises.
