This song..goosebumps from the minute Ed opens his mouth til the end. ❤ what a work of art. I lost my Dad last year.

  • @bravetitangrizzly

My dad was killed when I was 5. This song resonates a lot with me. “I am myself, like you, somehow. I wait up in the dark for you to speak to me” not only just the lyrics themselves, but the way he puts so much passion and emotion into them when he sings them, it’s chilling. Good video guys hope all is well

Eddie did NOT have a good relationship with his stepfather. In fact, he was abusive toward Eddie. “Rearviewmirror” is about him finally getting away from the man. “Better Man” is about his mother being stuck with an asshole. The pain from that relationship comes up in his lyrics again and again. He may have reconciled later in life with his stepdad, but he went through a lot. I hear Release as Eddie talking to his real dad, almost like a prayer. His pain turned into such a beautiful song.

I also believe that he had met his real father once I think and that he was introduced to Eddie as a friend of the family by his mother. Heard it on Stern.

    • @keithgraham8588
      @keithgraham8588 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@markspooner4883 Partially true but he never met his real father. It was his stepfather who his mother told him was his real father and didn't know about his real father until he had already passed away. It is more like a song of regret because he did not have a chance to connect with his biological father.

If you had the privilege of seeing this live from one of the greatest bands ever, be thankful. Raise your hands. Chills.
There is more to the story of the song. His real dad was thought of like a friend of the family or just some guy they knew, while Eddie had no idea this guy was his father, who incidentally, was also a musician. Decades later, Release took on a new meaning. Eddie gives the fans credit for making it a positive song. He says he can feel his dad around sometimes. I can say the same of mine.

I relate to Vin, my father left my life when I was 6 months old so we moved from Chicago back to to Boston. After 10 years of silence a letter arrived in my mailbox addressed to me. I opened curiously to a lined piece of paper with "My dear son patrick," at the top. A four page hand written note explained his absence. He had found God. He was sorry. I lit up like a Christmas Tree. I have a Dad. We exchanged letters for a few months and made plans to meet. I actually got to speak to him during the 89 all star game because my aunt arranged it. He died 8/7/89. Self inflicted. The first time I met my father was at his wake.

My son is adopted and I never hid it from him. I made the decision to answer his questions truthfully whenever he asked. It's been OK so far, but there are still hurts that are beneath the surface and it's a difficult thing for any child to know that they are not with their biological parents, there will be questions that linger.

Song makes me cry to this very day.... Every time...
Eddie wrote this about his father.
TEN is heart wrenching, mind-blowing, life changing... One of my all time favorites.
My dad was abusive (first time I was ever picked up and thrown across a room, I was 9, for an example), racist, sexist, homophobic... I didn't speak to him the last several years of his life, and I don't feel bad for it. I'm nothing like him.
As a father, I'm not abusive at all. I refused to put my kids through what I went through.
His last words to me was "I hope your family falls off a cliff" and my last words to him were "Go fuck yourself". I didn't even cry when he died. I went to the funeral because it was the right thing to do.

so as it goes, Eddie's bio dad was always in the picture as a family friend. so he knew who he was. was in his company many times. they had all that time to come clean with him. even when he was terminal, they still didn't tell him the truth. only after he'd passed ,finally it was revealed. what a strange decision..

Gabe did a great job with the synopsis... When they turned off the tape, Eddie went out in the hall and broke down. Jeff came out to see if he was okay. That's how bonds are formed.
About 10 years ago someone who knew and played with his dad gave him a disc and he got to hear his dad sing. Eddie's latest solo album "Earthling" has a song toward the end (don't know the name) that incorporates his dad's vocals. Having never gotten the opportunity to have a relationship with his dad, he feels the loss but also has grown to feel a strong bond through music.
