The Mega Drive (renamed Genesis in US) was already a huge success (40 million systems sold) BUT it could have been even more successful considering all the games in its library which SHOULD have been better marketed like this one! Gunstar Heroes is so freaking awesome. Treasure graced the Mega Drive with inventive gaming masterpieces (Gunstar Heroes as well as Alien Soldier, Yū Yū Hakusho: Makyō Tōitsusen, Dynamite Headdy...).
^ these numbers seem to vary. Tips for Free Shot users On Easy and Normal, use Lightning + Chaser. On Hard and Expert, use Force + Chaser. Why? Lightning + Chaser can only target one enemy at a time and has an annoying tendency to lock onto things it can’t damage. (Example: Pinky Roader, Phantom.) This isn’t much of a problem on easier difficulties, as you can just stop shooting and start again to switch targets and enemies die quick enough where locking onto only one person isn’t a problem. But on harder difficulties, there are a lot of enemies and many things in the way where it’s a nuisance. Force + Lightning, while you still have to aim from time to time, it’s better fit for the hectic gameplay of the Hard and Expert modes. Tips for Fixed Shot users If you prefer to use fixed shot, you probably want to use Force + Fire for all difficulties. It works well all the time. Chaser weapons are a no-go for fixed shot because it becomes useless when you can’t precisely aim, especially since you can’t run away. (An exception is Chaser + Fire, as demonstrated in this longplay.) Precise aiming is ESSENTIAL to success in fixed shot. Also, basically any non-chaser weapon should work in fixed shot anyway, I just like Force + Fire due to precise aiming and high damage. Even then, you really shouldn’t rely on your gun for fixed shot. If you want to stand a chance on harder difficulties, you want to nail down your melee options, specifically your drop kick (the move pulled off by jumping and pressing Down + C.) Just some pro tips.
If you're especially skillful on Expert Mode, the Fire + Lightning combo (otherwise known as *"Lightning Sabre / Harakiri Laser"* can be a good bet to destroy most weak enemy shots, since there will usually be a lot of them on-screen. You might have trouble beating some of Seven Force's forms, though, but once you get past those, Seven Force isn't too bad.
This game came out when I was 2 and I remember playing it around the age of 5 or 6. I didn't have any siblings but I did have my dad, an auto diesel mechanic who had 0 gaming inclination. Nonetheless, he played it with me. For how long, I can't recall. I couldn't even remember the name of this game until recently I stumbled across it. Oh what a trip down memory lane this video was. Everything up until around 30 minutes I can so vividly remember, but that's where it cut off for me. I can only imagine our combined gaming prowess met our match somewhere around that stage. We quickly moved on to other games like Driver when I got my new playstation and what followed was 25+ years of gaming alone. I would trade it all to go back and play this with him 1 more time though.
This game literally pushed the mega drive to its limits and it workes absolutely awesome. The gameplay, soundtracks, graphics, parallax scrolling, tones, etc etc everything was just phenomenal
This is mind bending how much stuff is happenning on screen to make you believe that this game bypass the hardware limitations of the genesis with very clever yet simple tricks. This is wizardry and art. Just look at that stage where you see the level through a window near the end. The Genesis has only two planes and they play with them with such creative insanity, inverting priorities middle screen and stuff that they achieves to make you believe that there's 3 or 4 planes. (If counting the battle in the elevator to the boss)...
I was off school sick and my Dad rented this for me from the video shop (that's how old I am). I absolutely loved it. This is bringing back fond memories of playing this with my sister and being nowhere near *this* coordinated
Whoever the two who were playing this game are, they are GOOD. Even the easiest difficulty setting gave me trouble. They make it look so easy. Nice touch striking poses after clearing stages where you'd be able to do so.

SaviourV Short? That was practically a repeat of the same game with 1 or 2 small plot changes and an extra level thrown in that really did nothing for the story. I watched a longplay of it and felt like anyone who bought that expecting a different game would likely have felt cheated.
zshimada But the gameplay wasn't as good or frenetic like the original Gunstar Heroes, and they abused way too much with Mode 7. Glad the genesis didn't have mode 7 because it would be gimmicky and awkward as fuck like Contra 3 or Gunstar Super heroes.

Nostalgia!!! I wish if I could download this on my Xbox or put it on a hard drive and play!
This game is so unbelievably awesome. Probably the best run n gun out there.
This game i got together with new box of sega console, this was my first game on sega and as it turned out one of the best games along with Alladin and Sonik .I bought this console only becous of Alladin, wich i saw on TV, and this game seemed like a miracle.
Nice guarding at 29:25 or so. No damage from that sneaky move Curry Rice pulled off. That gets you some finesse points.
crazily underrated game, just look at how many midstage minibosses appeared in one single level
so, the creators of mischief makers made this game.
Amazing!
Amazing Fun. . So much better than the ''modern games'' I we play recently ...groan.
This Game Rocked Badass Gameplay And The Music.
It has so much stuff going on at once like those NeoGeo games. I wonder how did they even do that on a Genesis.
I still like gunstar heros and its 2024
This game is something else. Superb.
I use the Laser gun and that green thing! So much memories!
Gunstar Heroes 3D released on the 3DS a few days ago!
When watching this, it sounds and feels a bit like Rocket Knight Adventures / Sparkster :) Love it!
Some of the composers & programmers from konami went to treasure 👍🏼
The machine that Green's controlling it can transform into anything
One of the most brutally difficult games of all time. Judging by this video, it appears 2 player makes it a cakewalk.
my favorite mega drive game
i remember this game when I was a kid.. One of the best eva!
No!.... The Earth... under one persons`s power...
Why this game couldn't have a sequel? It's one of the best shooter games in sega genesis library.
Try Gunstar Super Heroes.
RaoNeo Which came up a bit short because the developers rushed it. A pity.
SaviourV
Short? That was practically a repeat of the same game with 1 or 2 small plot changes and an extra level thrown in that really did nothing for the story. I watched a longplay of it and felt like anyone who bought that expecting a different game would likely have felt cheated.
Check The Cutting Room Floor for information on what failed to make it into the final release.

But the gameplay wasn't as good or frenetic like the original Gunstar Heroes, and they abused way too much with Mode 7. Glad the genesis didn't have mode 7 because it would be gimmicky and awkward as fuck like Contra 3 or Gunstar Super heroes.
This was my favorite co-op game as a kid.
