Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Review

  • Lisa reviews the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, an innovative Android smartphone with a curved display and a pen. The Edge is the same as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in terms of appointments, specs and overall size- with one exception: the phone’s display curves on one side. That 160 pixel wide edge display handles notifications, acts as an app launcher, a bedside clock, news/stocks/sports ticker and you can even play games on it. The main display is the same lovely 2560 x 1440 Super AMOLED as the Note 4, but it’s 5.6”. The display is covered with curved Gorilla Glass 3 with a curved AMOLED display below. It’s unique and actually very useful. The Galaxy Note Edge costs around $100 more than the Note 4 and it has the same quad core 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 CPU, 3 gigs of RAM, 32 gigs of storage, microSD card slot, removable battery, 16MP rear camera with 4K video recording, fingerprint scanner and health monitor. It runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s TouchWiz software. It sells for $399 on contract and $840 to $946 depending on carrier.

    I actually like your review. Not too many reviewers go into detail about this edge screen. They all turning it down and slapping it. Lol but you, Lisa, I enjoyed the viewing. It's not as bad as people say. But to each is own. Great job

    Great review. This is the most in depth review I've seen on this phone. Everyone reviewed it as not leftie friendly and convinced me how useless the edge was but you're the first to point the turn and pull out button option and how practical the edge can be. Now there's hope for lefties like me. I wish all reviewers would learn the product properly before they criticize as most potential buyers are influenced by them. Seems like a great device but don't think it's for me though.

    Best review to date on the Samsung Galaxy Note edge.
    * simply the edge part is not gimmicky but practical. IMO would like to see future smartphone lean towards this design

    I have the Galaxy Note Edge and I must say, it is an extremely well designed and awesome phone. Each day I use it, I discover more versatility with the edge display. The screen is beautiful and camera quality is much better than my previous Note 3. I also really like the night clock feature as well. This really is a great phone.

    As usual, your reviews Lisa are on point. Finally someone gets it. Too many claiming its a gimmick, or priced too much, or that it has plastic sides, but as you mentioned it does bring alot more to the table. Only about $5 more on carriers monthly payment plans, metal sides and more unique. With the sdk open to developers, I can see that side panel used for so many things. That drawer pull for the 180 degree feature is a nice feature. The only thing going against it is the bit smaller battery, but with fast charging it is not a big deal.
    There is one thing I wish the video would have covered and that is with the multi-window panel and the curved area. With the right side being curved with those embedded apps, does the multi-window panel show up in that curved area or to the left of the curved area?
    i also noticed that on this T-Mobile version that the carrier placed their own apps in that curved area. i wonder if that is the same for other carriers.
    With this being a "so-called" limited edition, I feel that it will be quite popular and will lead to either a 2nd generation with both sides curved or merged into the Note 5 version.
    TS

      ***** it was either this or the gear s watch. I had only one upgrade on my account. I was hoping on them doing some kind of bundle but I doubt it since carriers are treating the watch as a phone. I really like the watch but going to wait and let them sort out the pricing. Really love the way Sammy is innovating. this video proves its much more than a gimmick! The edge of this device is very useful and makes sense on a (i really hate this word) phablet!

    Mine arrives on Wednesday, Paired with the Gear S This is the most advanced mobile phone and watch in the marketplace.
    You can call it a gimmick but it adds alot of functionality and in the case a seperate screen that is customizable which means you can further personalize your phone.
    Functional, powerful, best display on market, rare (as floss would say the floss factor is off the charts).
    Samsung is putting out some amazing devices.

    I wonder if an onscreen keyboard like the Minuum Keyboard could be programmed to function entirely in the curved edge. It would be pretty cool to not have a keyboard pop-up and cover part of your display every time you wanted to type something.

      I concur whole-heartedly! I bought mine back in May of this year (Samsung must have had a box-full of them hidden away), for about 40% of the original retail, soooo.....
      It has features that have been lost on the newer notes, such as a removable battery, an SD card slot, a useable edge and STILL has the IR port!
      I love this phone! I want to marry it! (Wait....I can do that now!)

    if ZeroLemon makes an extended battery and protective case with built-in screen protector, (which they are in the process of doing for the NOTE 4) , then i'll get the NOTE EDGE .. But as of now, i'll be getting the NOTE 4 in a few weeks .. I can't buy a phone that doesn't support ZeroLemon Extended Batteries .. THEY ARE FANTASTIC
    EXCELLENT REVIEW .. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK

    I actually felt the Edge performs better than Note 4. I compared the two side by side in the Samsung store and could tell them apart.
    It could be that Samsung improved firmware wise but my personal experience was a little frustrated with the recent apps screen on Note 4 as compared to Edge.
    I just wish I could increase the DPI of these devices without rooting. So much resolution wasted.

  • @elevul
    @elevul 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Lisa, you're forgetting two critical things: the Galaxy Edge WILL NOT work with Galaxy Gear VR, nor it will receive the ZeroLemon 10000mah+ battery anytime soon, which means that it will end up being an inferior device once all these external tools are counted in the equation.

    • @Jimmy4video
      @Jimmy4video 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For people that would have bought those items. I agree that would have been worth mentioning, but I don't think it makes the device inferior per se.

    • @elevul
      @elevul 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's worth mentioning because that $100 in price can provide the GN4 with a lot more usability than the GNE can provide with it's lateral display.

    • @lololololololol444
      @lololololololol444 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people don't buy them because they don't really know about them. I have met very few people who own phablets who weren't extatic when I showed them the battery life and durability with the ZeroLemon battery + case. Keep in mind that the people who buy huge phablets don't buy them as a fashion accessory (they can't put them in those small pockets), they buy them as all-around tools, to provide most of what a PC can, but in mobility.

    Good to know that it has palm rejection. The only concern now is the limited quantities which might deter developers; then again it might not be too time consuming to modify apps to take advantage of the edge screen.

    You should have included that, at the same price as the iPhone 6 Plus, you are not limited to 64GB in like the 6 Plus. You are getting $100 worth included in the Note Edge for expandable storage, up to 128GB? I believe. But of course you're still gonna spend more for that storage upgrade. Just thought it was a nice feature people don't look for.

      I have the Samsung Flip Wallet and they shorten the width of the coverso the edge still shows and it just covers the edges of the phone so the edge screen is still exposed. I also purchased a soft/hard plastic case and it's similar in that the edge is left exposed but the frame of the phone is protected.
