Seeking asylum and qualifying for asylum are two different things. You have the right to ask, but you're not automatically entitled to receive it.

AOC makes me think of the scene at the beginning of the movie Used Cars (1980) where the Kurt Russell character (a cunning car salesman who is interested in entering politics) is taken aside by one of the 'real' party honchos and has it explained how they're looking for the right type of guy, the right face ... turns out it's a casting call as much as much as it is a meeting to iron out some kind of agenda (which is already set of course). Most of these representatives are led by the nose as much as anything, for being loyal they are generally kept around ... they don't find politics so much as politics finds them. AOC (being fully absorbed at this point) represents useful and entirely showy controlled opposition within the party, she makes the long established Democrats in Congress look sensible (relatively) by comparison, when the chips are down she votes how she is told by her elders.
