    Very informative! We will add this our "garden to do list". We are always looking for techniques to further unlock the growing potential of our small urban homestead. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

    One thing to note, if the water you're spraying onto the charcoal comes from a municipal source it probably has chlorine in it. Which you've just sprayed on a highly adsorbent material. That makes the stuff not so great for cultivating beneficial bacteria.
    It's much better to use rain or lake/pond water for this.

    The one thing that the Tamarisk tree is actually good for, biochar!

    I've done this on a small scale using a tin can, for activated charcoal to act as a filter in a terrarium.

    keep bucket of water and what ever already burn and become charcoal put it directly in the water so it doesn't burn fully and get to ash.

    i am confused what to do with the charcoal. does it soak nutrients up and reduce the amount of nutrients in the compost and soil. or is it like a nutrients storage FOR the compost and soil? should i layer it in the compost? or just give it on top of the soil?

    • @NaturesAlwaysRight
      @NaturesAlwaysRight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After it's charged, has nutrients and biology you can mix it in 5-10% in soil or other amendments you add to the garden.

    Isn't pallet wood treated with chemicals?

    • @nathanwooldridge85
      @nathanwooldridge85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wooden pallets are typically either Heat Treated (HT) or Chemically Treated (CT) and there will be a code painted somewhere on the pallet. This code enables you to not only figure out the treatment process, but other things like place of manufacturer

    how do you use this in aquaponics?

  • @sharonchew2144
    @sharonchew2144 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I soaked ground biochar in a bucket of compost tea with alpaca poop for several months, without aerating the mixture during those months, then drained out the biochar. Is this biochar ruined with anaerobic microbes?

    • @K9BoardAndTrain
      @K9BoardAndTrain 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put it back and pump air into it to fix it.

    So how is this different than buying briquets?

    • @enjoypolo
      @enjoypolo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Briquits may contain chemicals that were added to burn more-or-less efficiently, thus not really suitable as a soil amendment for growing food. The benefit of biochar is usually the "organic" (no added chemical) value :)

      @Anonymous I agree with the first part but please don't listen to Geoff Lawton when it comes to biochar, he's just parrotting what he heard elsewhere without having sufficient understanding or experience with biochar himself. In a somewhat recent video of his where he attempted to explain the barrel in barrel retort he neglected to mention that the inner barrel is in fact a retort and not a sealed drum which is downright dangerous.
      Maybe it was a good thing he was just talking and not doing an actual demonstration because he seemed to be drunk as well :/
      Poorly made biochar can still come of your hands cleanly with water and good biochar can be difficult to remove as well so this is a poor method of determining the quality.

    Find a steel barrel of similar circumference to your pit and cut a ring out of it, about 1/3 the of the barrel. Place that around your fire. Keeps oxygen feed coming in from the top (flame cap kiln/firebox). Like this: instagram.com/p/CBqW5DnhfAA/ You will burn off more of the volatiles and improve quality of the char. Also less ash than you experienced. Thanks for the great video. john @ gobiochar
