Songwriter: Kris Kristofferson
Casey joins the hollow sound of silent people walking down,
The stairway to the subway in the shadows down below.
Following their footsteps through the neon-darkened corridors,
Of silent desperation, never speaking to a soul.
The poison air he's breathing has the dirty smell of dying,
'Cos it's never seen the sunshine and it's never felt the rain.
But Casey minds the arrows and ignores the fatal echoes,
Of the clicking of the turnstiles and the rattle of his chains.
"Oh," she said: "Casey, it's been so long since I've seen you.
"Here," she said: "just a kiss to make a body smile.
"See," she said: "I've put on new stockings just to please you.
"Lord," she said. "Casey, can you only stay a while."
Casey leaves the underground and stops inside The Golden Crown,
For something wet to wipe away the chill that's on his bones.
Seeing his reflection in the lives of all the lonely men,
Who reach for anything they can to keep from going home.
Standing in the corner, Casey drinks his pint of bitter,
Never glancing in the mirror at the people passing by.
Then he stumbles as he's leaving and he wonders if the reason,
Is the beer that's in his belly or the tear that's in his eye.
"Oh," she said: "I suppose you seldom think about me.
"Now," she said: "now that you've a family of your own.
"Still," she said: "It's so blessed good to feel your body.
"Lord," she said: "Casey, it's a shame to be alone."

The Two together here wow 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰❤️❤️❤️
A pure treasure and a genius of a song writer
All of
Chris's talents are all poured out in this fantastic song. Very haunting.
Real live singing God Bless 'em
One of the great, if not the greatest songwriters of a generation. A true poet.
True, but I rarely get any comments about the meaning of his lyrics or, for that matter, any other song on the channel.
Waylon Jennings
The greatest
When Willie hits the higher register on "Blessed good," it hits the sweet spot every time. The studio version with Kris and Willie is probably my favorite song arrangement of all time, especially when that electric organ whistles in both verses, and it makes me sad it is not on this version.
Gaddd damm this is amazing
Thanks for listening...
kris kristoferson is the true POET and phylofessor of our times and needs recognition for exactly that!!!!
what an unbelievably beautiful and sad song. Kris is the true king of Country!
The King ????
I always considered him more Country Folk because he also has the artsy Leonard Cohen style of writing.
I prefer the darker record version
but Kris and Willie together ❤️
So Beautiful....RIP Kris
Makes you wanna smile and cry at the same time ... art
how could you not smile at a time like this every time I play and sing music like this I have a blast sometimes you can't help but smile
What a song!
Che bella canzone!qui si tratta di due leggende...Willie e Kris!🥰🤗😍😍😘😘🎶🎸🎸🎶💘💓💕💋💋💯💯🍀🍀
Can't beat a Kristofferson song!
Never a truer word spoken or written
i love how it's supposed to be a sad song but Mr. Kristofferson is smiling while singing!
robwayne1000 what does the song symbolize?
My fave song.
Absolutely love this version! Thank you for posting.
I like the video
Simply Brilliant,such emotion
I love you Kris
How nice just to be mellow and listen to this!!
Two great singers singing a great song thank you for posting this
Fabulous. Thanks so much! All musical roads lead back to the highwaymen!
An Absolute Marvelous performance.....thank you for this great great share....
fantastic song
Inspired by the London Underground and his time at Oxford Uni. Marvelous. Only reference to English Bitter in a Country song to my knowledge.
The song reminds me of Lennon's "A Day In The Life" and the lyric "He blew his mind out in a car". Lennon wrote the song out of the day's headlines. I have often wondered if "Casey" was a story inspired by a newspaper story.
Seen Kris twice now. I have been a fan all my life. Well most of it. I used to know his entire repertoire and would sing it loudly and badly to myself when in the lower reaches of the engine room of a nuclear submarine patrolling the colder regions in the '70's. Wish I could see Willie before either of us cross the bar.
I gave it a thumbs up for the effort. Sound was terrible, song was perfect.
Love it, thanks for sharing.
interesting register, compared to the studio, awesome video, thank you for posting it.
great POST Thank You Very Much
Awesome! Thank you so much!
willies vocal passion shows through on this kris god bless u. ur a grade a song writer but willie drove is home
This is really good!
Good to see the writer singing his own song. Even though he is a better actor than he is a singer. Mr Kristofferson I salute the poet in your soul. For a really atmospheric version of this song please try Emmlou Harris singing this. It's recently posted on TH-cam
+snakemansnakes Eaton . Took your advice. Give John Denvers' version a listen
Thanks Nick! I didn't know John Denver had a cover of this song. I'll check it out, thanks for the tip
wunderschöner song :-)))
Kris Kristopherson writes to stark reality.
The lack of interest in this piece speaks volumes about the quality of interest of the general listening population of the various nations. Lord what is happening to this world of listeners.
+mtchair4me "Superficiality is the curse of this age"
I always liked this one....but John Denver's version will always be my favorite
This one is a little over-produced, but still good.
What a brilliaqnt version of a wonderful song. These men are geniuses of song. Which show did this come from, please - and can we see more?
+lindagal A link to the show is in the description or at the end of the video as "Playlist".
+Mostly Brenda Thanks. I've found your playlist and will watch more.
❤
Un par a todo dar.
True Detective brought me here ! :)
You aren't the only one, son.
And I can see your soul on the edges of your eyes
Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson brought me here.
Give'em a guitar!!! great vid haha
The song was already odd, because Kris had to sing the female's part of the song.
It would have made perfect sense for Kris to have done a duet with a woman, so that she could sing the female's role in the song..
But, they bring in Willie Nelson during the female's first verse, and it became more odd.
I've never heard a version with a female voice and the song is from 1970.
@@MostlyBrenda
Well Brenda,
Kris Kristopherson knew Linda Ronstadt, and could have hired her to produce Casey's Last Ride, with him.
She would have been the perfect voice and personality for the female role in this song. Linda Ronstadt spent much of her time, from 1965 to 1969 collaborating with various male artists, that she had relationships with. So, in 1970, when Kris Kristopherson produced this song, Linda Ronstadt would have complimented him well for this song. Then, it would have been a number 1 seller.
Kris Kristopherson followed an odd course, with this song. So, it never became a top selling song.
@@jeromebychowski7006 I think that ship has sailed. Anyway, Kris obviously never wanted a female voice in it as he did his way for 50 yrs. Another point is that a famous singer like Linda may not want to portray the woman in this song.
@@MostlyBrenda
In 1970, Linda Ronstadt was just starting as a solo artist, and was only touring as one of several opening acts for the Doors, Neil Young, Jackson Brown, and several other bands, that she would hook up with periodically.
She did not get much recognition until 1973.
With respect to that female role, in Casey's Last Ride in 1970, she probably would have taken it, because it perfectly fit her image, in 1970. Actually, some songs from Linda Ronstad's first solo album in 1969 were:
•Baby, You've Been On My Mind
•I Bet No One Ever Hurt So Bad
•I will Be Your Baby Tonight
Well, Kris Kristopherson may have just got some bad advice, and passed on his opportunity to use a female for a duet on Casey's Last Ride. He lost a lot of money, by doing that song solo.
If he performed it as a duet, with a female partner, that song could have made it to a top 10 level. But, he did not. Instead, Kris Kristopherson oddly sang it solo. Later on, he made it more odd, and did a duet with Willie Nelson.
All this mist from Willie’s joints
LOVE this song and absolutely LOVE Kris Kristofferson but this video....it's a little cheesy. It had to be said.
what is the relationship of the woman and casey? I. wondered for years. Help clarify?
Start with the title. What is Casey contemplating?
what he is contemplating cannot be anything but awful...yet.....what relationship is between casey and the woman who "put on new stockings just to please"?
It is awful, but each year tens of thousands of people in this country die by their own hand. So, if you are thinking about it, you might want to visit an old "friend". Is she an ex-girlfriend or ex-wife? Possibly. A mistress? Not likely. "new stockings" sounds like a prostitute to me. It's just the sort of thing they know about their clients. How to "please" them. This is just my interpretation.
OUTSTANDING YOU ARE RIGHT MISS Brenda
I never understood this song although I like it. I read somewhere that it was about drugs. Since I have never done drugs I figured that's why I don't understand it. But I still like it. This is not a good version.
insanity, doing the same thing every day and wishing for a different result. where?s the new world in the mornin?
The background music was not right for the lyrics. Also, the music was too loud and drowned out the singing.
Great song otherwise.
Слава Україні !!! Героям слава, слава нації !!! Смерть ворогам !!!
The 'lack of interest' could also be because this a poor quality recording of an overly produced, over orchestrated worst version of a really good song by 2 really good artists that I've ever heard? we should all go find a better recording of it.
This is an obvious example of how good country music songs were ruined (or made awkward) by these kinds of over-done theatrics! Maybe it was just because of the good cocaine?
He's a living LEGEND and a problem when he's stoned. A true profit who can see where I'm blind! Been a Kristofferson fan forever. And Willie what talents! Wanted the Outlaws. & The apple that didn't fall from the tree. (Lukas) & the red headed stranger, the universe tknows them by first name basics. Jesus & Lucifer!
@@pauljohnson4337ciao Paul! 🙋♀️😍😘💘🍀
Great lyrics by Kris but I prefer John Denvers version, more plaintive.
