Okay so the last time we learned about the state of Florida, we learned a lot. Like we learned where the good areas are, where the bad areas are, and what each region of the state is like.
Most of the best neighborhoods to live in Florida are going to be in the Orlando and Tampa area. The best CITIES to live are in Palm Beach, Key Biscayne and Sanibel. But those places are pretty expensive. Some of the worst places you can live in Florida are gonna be in the north Miami burbs. Some of those areas are ROOOUGH.
We also learned that north Florida is very southern and not as populated, the middle part of the state is sorta affordable and mostly nice and the southern part of Florida is expensive, more crowded and has a lot more crime. A lot of people live along the coast, where it varies from super rich to ghetto, depending on where you are.
But there’s a lot more to Florida than that. We didn’t talk about some Florida history, interesting facts and the issues that people in Florida face today.
So that’s what we’re gonna do in this video. Kind of pick up where we left off in a more lighthearted way. We’re going to look at all of that stuff and even meet some people who LIVE in Florida who are gonna tell us what it's like in their state and where you could move if you relocate here. It’s time for Cornerhouse Tales: Florida. The Freedom State?

Florida is suffering now from the massive influx of people . The beaches are walled off by Condo's and Mansions . Every road is being being widened to at least 6 lanes . Nearly every species of animal both land and water are under stress due to development . The costs of Homes and Rent are skyrocketing as they are in most of America . Farms are disappearing and being replaced with Track Homes such as the Villages . And the hope is that having Water for all these people to drink will not become a concern . As most water is supplied by an Underground Aquifer . Florida use to be like a lazy river . Slow and enjoyable , not anymore . And for decades no one wanted to live in Florida due to the heat & bugs . Now everyone wants to live there . And that's why we left .

It’s still super nice though (even if some days you see more New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania plates than Florida plates on the roads). Only complaints I have now are the insane traffic (it’s gotten really bad the last couple years) and the lack of healthier restaurants…at least in my part of town. Florida is getting the first private high speed rail in the country (Miami to Orlando) via Brightline. However, the speeds aren't that fast - only peaking at 125mph and only for a very short part of the time. The trip from Orlando to Miami is expected to take 3 hours and 15 minutes, which isn't that much faster than by car - although likely to be consistent (Miami traffic is like any major metro and can add hours to a trip). I hope Brightline is successful, but I only see limited cases for a line between MCO (Orlando airport) and Miami. It will become more useful once Brightline connects to the Orlando attractions and/or SunRail connects to the airport.

It became so crowded and so expensive that most of my friends can't afford to live there without 2 incomes or more. There is so much to do and so much culture. But there is such a high cost of living... I hope that Florida doesn't lose its long-term residents.

Born and raised on the Space Coast in FL. Great place to grow up but I live in NC now. I got tired of the 7 month long, brutal summers. Florida is a great place to live and raise kids though. My family still lives there so I go back every now and then. I might end up moving back there one day to be close to family. Some things I always tell people about Florida is that it is WAY more than South Beach and Disney World. There are some really cool historic towns in FL. There are some cool outdoorsy spots that are not beaches. Try driving through an old, sleepy, mossy town in the middle of the state. You might just eat the best fish, oysters and/or bbq you've ever had. Florida is a very large state with a lot of stuff going on. Try taking a trip to places like Howey-in-the-Hills, Plant City (best strawberries in the world!) and the Ocala National Forest. Some really cool stuff to see and do!

I lived in Florida for about 12 years (Tampa area), but left in August 2021. (Moved to a college town in North Mississippi.) Florida isn't an all-bad state by any means. Certainly, there is plenty to do if you're an active person... besides the beaches, of course! The downside is that the crowding and traffic is off-the-charts in much of the state. Crime is too high practically everywhere, not just in the larger cities! Stupefying heat & humidity for way too much of the year. And the frosting on the cake... rents have gone through the roof. The rents are approaching California rents, and NON-beach areas in Florida are also surprisingly expensive. For MOST people, the jobs aren't paying what it takes to make things happen. So for me, that was the final straw! In my opinion, the trends, going forward, don't look promising.

Lived in a suburb north of Tampa Florida from 2000 until 2018 and was a good place to be. The influx of people has always been pretty steady but the last few years have been ridiculous. Traffic everywhere. Home prices through the roof. My father bought our home in 2010 for 135k it is now worth 380k. Mostly low paying jobs even though I was lucky enough to make a good amount of money but the majority of my friends who I graduated with weren't so lucky. Wages aren't keeping up with inflation which isnt just happening in Florida. Glad I was able to experience Florida at a really good time but would not move back unless I am retired in 30-40 years. Only thing I miss is the beach but other than that I am content with moving away. There is expected to be another 2 million people moving to Florida in only a few years. Crazy.

Ive lived in south Florida my whole life basically. The amount of traffic and the amount of people moving in, tourists coming is getting insane. I used to love going to downtown to Miami and Fort Lauderdale and the beaches but now they’re so crowded, I prefer driving a bit north to Palm Beach county and going to the more private beaches. Orlando is great, so much to do, people are nice, cheap living but the amount of people moving there is bad too, so much traffic and there’s so much road work always going on especially on the I4. I live in western broward county, more suburban areas like Coral Springs, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Davie, Plantation are all nice but I feel like many people have realized that these cities are nice to live in, and now all these cities are filled with tons of people too, and the traffic during rush hour is unbearable now. It wasn’t like this 10 years ago that I could remember. But still I love Florida i don’t envision myself leaving the state because I can’t think of any other type of state I’d like to be in more than here, maybe California but that’s even worse with their prices and population

Then crime starts soaring and in a generation or two it becomes just another place to run away from, Plus if sea level rises a couple of feet by the end of century Florida fabulous beaches will get destroyed and storm damage from tidal surges from hurricanes will increase exponentially. .

I lived there 7 years and came back up north. Unless you have a lot of money, which goes for everywhere, you end up in dead-zone suburban neighborhood like any other. If you imagine that you'll be sipping a Margarita under a palm tree with kettle drums playing in the background, you will be very disappointed. It's very buggy with oppressive heat that goes on and on.....When you go out your door, all you hear is AC units, landscapers (it never ends), and the scream of bugs. Most stay inside with the AC blowing, blinds shut and staring at a screen. You can venture out, but in minutes your clothes are wet with sweat. When you get in your car you can barely breathe for a few minutes, and if you crack the windows, good luck with a passing torrential rainstorm. Weird crime in the news every day (lots of sketchy transients). I had someone trying to get into my bedroom window at 3 in the morning. Thank God I put window regulator locks a week before. I don't miss it at all.

I came to Florida in 1976 when I was 10. We lived in the Orlando area. Disney World was still very new. For $13.00, you could get a day pass and ride all the rides all day. Wekiwa (Although, we used to call it Wekiva) Springs Park was practically empty. We used to visit Miami when there was no high rises and only 2 million people (there is about 7 million now) When I went to college in 1984, I had to drive through the country to get to the almost new University of Florida, which had only a handful of buildings and some dorms. I moved to Gainesville in 1988 and the population then was less than 100,000. The University used to be closed in summer and half the population (students) would leave and some of the businesses would close up. I loved living there. We use to visit Cedar key and canoe down the Suwannee River. I live in California now, but go back to Florida every year to see my father and it is not recognizable. It makes me want to cry.

I lived in Orlando for a few years and moved to Jacksonville about 3 years ago. Best move I ever made. You couldn’t pay me enough to live in Miami or Tampa. Orlando just has way too much traffic. Jacksonville has its issues but honestly since I don’t live in the hood it doesn’t really impact me. Saving up and getting ready to move to a smaller town outside of Jax, I don’t think I’ll ever leave.

Parts of Florida are really beautiful: the area between Jacksonville and Ocala on US27, along US98 on the coast around the panhandle, and the Keys. SR 40 from Daytona to Ocala, through the Ocala National Forest is just gorgeous. Tampa/St. Pete are very nice cities. I spent some time in Ocala helping my father through rehab following his second stroke. Ocala is a very nice city -- just the right size; and I was able to work from my father's home while going to the rehab hospital daily to help him with rehab. I liked the folks in Ocala: they're the salt of the earth. I think it's the nicest part of Florida.
Something to note: Texas summers are hot. Florida summers are absolutely brutal.

Wait wait wait... speaking for myself and friends. Californians are not wanting to move to other states to turn them blue. As a matter of fact, most of us leaving are moderates or conservatives who want our money to work for us, instead of the other way around. We simply want more affordable lifestyles because most of us are professional class college graduates who rent. We want to leave California to experience more affordable lifestyles... unfortunately, greedy real estate investors and supply shortages are driving-up insane housing prices. Everyone unjustifiably wants to have these California prices. Its sucks for all of us... especially those of us who have been saving for years.
