I try flixbus in the USA between New York City and Boston, to see if they're better than Flixbus Europe, and if they're better than Greyhound (that shouldn't be too hard, right?).
Also book with my Flixbus referral link, if you want to support the channel with a small commission :) flixbus.tp.st/OtGOYzHn
We also have the story of my awful experience with Greyhound a few years ago!
I've been all over Europe with Flixbus, and generally really like the company, although the buses are sometimes really noisy. So will I like Flixbus USA just as much? Or will it be even worse than Greyhound?
Amtrak fares to travel on this route by train are significantly higher than the £30 I paid for this. So it's probably a really nice thing to have competition. And any Europeans who already have, and are used to using, the Flixbus app will find the ticketing process very easy. So overall I'd say that my review of Flixbus in America is a pretty good one.
I also of course have other Flixbus and Flixtrain content on the channel, but you probably already know that ;)
#travel #usa #bus
I hope that you're doing well and staying safe.

00:00 Trying Flixbus USA
01:44 Flixbus NYC to Boston
04:38 How bad is Greyhound?
07:16 Boston, Massachusetts by bus
Flix bus actually ownes Greyhound now and since the buyout in 2021 Greyhound service has ironically gotten worse. Wonder when that synergy is going to be flowing?
It's the same story every time. A German company buys an American company. Immediately begins Destroying the American company.
I hadn't taken Greyhound in YEARS. Decided to give Flixbus a shot. It was a nightmare. It was drizzling. We waited in an area back from the curb under an overhang of the building. No sign of the bus. 10 minutes after the scheduled time I started trying to reach someone. Wound up talking to someone overseas with zero knowlege of US geography much less an understanding of my city. She advised me to just wait a day and take the bus. WTAF? We were traveling for the weekend and had hotel reservations. First we were told the bus was delayed. Then that the bus had left. The bus was unmarked at the stop when we arrived but I have no idea if that was our bus or not. . Mind you the pickup spot was a curbside area used by multiple companies. Not sure how they thought we would know which company they were with if that was Flix. We wound up rushing to the nearby Greyhound station. They made us wait two hours to be able to change our tickets. Had to call multiple times despite there being staff on site. Local staff very limited ability to do anything. What a mess. I would NEVER take Flix again.
Sounds dreadful! Hopeless companies deserve to go bust, especially when it would be so easy to do things right.
I had a similar experience to your Greyhound adventure with National Express. My 2:30am coach from Victoria to Luton didn't show up and I got told to get on the 3 o'clock one. Once that arrived they gave priority to the folks who had booked for that, meaning most of the 2:30am crowd got left behind. At least they refunded my Uber trip to the airport. Still, avoiding National Express at all costs now...
Ouch, yeah I don’t blame you 😭
The bus station IS in the center of Boston, but with good connections to I-90, probably as a result of it having been built in the last 25 years with some thought about connectivity to the major Amtrak and commuter rail lines.
Love your US travel stories, especially ones that I can relate to -- i.e. NYC, Greyhound issues, and Amtrak.
I took a FlixBus from Gothenburg to Oslo last month. It was nice.
We have watched the Greyhound buses across America not a pleasure even watching. We did the Flixbus all over Portugal and were really impressed, so wanted to watch your experience. Love that it was quiet. Going to watch the rest Tom as always.
You are getting more comfortable it seems with your videos. Love it
I actually fear getting on a Greyhound in the US these days. I’m so happy Flix was a good experience.
Hahaha I don’t blame you, thanks Lori :)
uhhh im taking greyhound from boston to nyc next week should I be worried
@@minor1822 , No, but I would definitely try to sit closer to the front of the bus. Have fun in New York!
@@lorij6445 well I actually live in new york, going to boston via amtrak then back via greyhound but... thanks for the advice, hope greyhound isn't too bad 😟
@@minor1822 , Going to New York won’t be so bad. That’s a somewhat short trip. I did enjoy riding that trip on Amtrak. Either way it beats driving and is worth the price of the ticket.
missed those travel-y / review-y bus (train) episodes!!!!!! dont get me wrong, i loved the lighthouse episode, but this episode bringing me back when i found your channel and bingewatched all the videos from your travels within Europe! Thanks for that!
At this point, Greyhound basically gets by on nostalgia and little else and has for a couple generations now.
Right. They've been in trouble since the mid-1980s. Barely hanging on by threads. I suspect that in less than 5 years Flix will have sucked what little blood is left in Greyhound and either sell off the few paltry remaining routes in pieces or simply shut it down altogether.
Flix needs to give you a sponsorship immediately. Tom, you could be their brand ambassador.
I took a Flixbus from Split to Zagreb September 2023 and it was really nice and cheap.
European flixbus is still the goat
Your greyhound story made me laugh. I have seen a few of your colleagues try greyhounds. Talking to a person? Their website working? Fair treatment? On Greyhound? You got the best possible Greyhound experience by not getting onto that bus.
You're a braver person than me. I only go by bus when there is no other option.
Walking would actually be much, much better
I thought Flixbus was better than Greyhound just wished the driver helped people get their bags. I never had to crawl under a bus before. Just was 17 people both ways Detroit to Chicago.
I have no clue why Mexican bud companies don’t take over this industry; they the money, the experience, and amazing and clean Volvo buses
If you ever happen to go back to/thru New Haven, see if you can stop for a bit and check out some of their iconic pizza places. Hope you enjoyed your whole trip!
The grin says it all…😁
Glad you enjoyed the trek…❤
Woooow that greyhound experience sounded so frustrating. I felt that for you 😢
Never again 🫡
It’s pretty clear a new Port Authority bus terminal is sorely needed to move most of these services into a modern terminal while freeing up the streets.
I’m here for it
I'm not sure if it's the same with Flixbus, but I remember with Megabus they always had stops outside the usual bus stations because it saved them money, so their tickets would cost less.
Flixbus will be my first choice whenever travelling in europe. Last year i used it too while travelling to nordic country from berlin-copenhagen, copenhagen-stockholm, then london-brussel it was fantastic and punctual. Only journey from london the c/in process is very strict compare the rest. If the booking mention 1 larga bag & 1 small bag makesure to follow it. Or the might be charge you on the spot 😢
Hey man! Just found your channel and I love how genuine you are about everything bravo sir!
Great video your brave. As someone who lives in Connecticut this is something I can do. You hit the lottery with your fellow passengers.
Aw thanks! 🤩
No problem I love your videos.
I had a bottle of duty free gin from when I flew into the US. Taken out of my hold luggage. Which I had no access to on the bus. Just confiscated on a LA > San Diego bus. No stops. Vowed never to use again. Amtrak back. Much nicer.
Was it confiscated, or just stolen??
Love the video. I didn't know they had Flixbus in the US
Thanks :)
I thought Flixbus was alright from Stockholm to Prague. The comfort was pretty good. The things that were problems were: 1. Wifi was limited to 100mb. Should have downloaded more stuff. Sitting not mandatory in the toilet so men just opened the door and pissed on the entire toilet and walls, I had to take 5 minutes to clean the toilets everytime. Breaks were not when they were scheduled and no information was given if a stop would be 30 seconds and 10 minutes. Should have bought more snacks and I didn't dare to go out to stretch my legs. I could do it again, but I would rather not. For the price it was excellent.
"Reputable famous American company" rotlf. If "reputable" means "has a reputation..." And the Port Authority! Not as bad as the bad old days, but yeesh. But I'm happy you had a good Flixbus experience and I'm glad I alread know you had a good experience up the coast, too.
Is there anything worse than Greyhound? I've seen several videos of journeys on them. They look genuinely traumatizing - horrifying in fact. I wouldn't wish one of those trips on anyone, utterly ghastly.
The shelter is across the street at NY Pizza Suprema. 😂
Congrats, you got lucky. I took the same bus last june and it was ... tolerable. No power, horrendous bathroom, sketchy people... and 3 hours late. Still better than Greyhound tho 😅
I just checked FlixBus for the first time to Fort Lauderdale from Fort Myers a month ago and I was pleased with it comfortable about 10 minutes late arrival to depart but arrived almost on time.
I just don’t like to drive on the toll roads in Florida and it got me to where I needed to go
One person talked very loud on their phone for a while, but other than that most people were respectful and just reading or sleeping or maybe even doing work on their phone
I meant to write, I just traveled with FlixBus for the first time, I didn’t mean to put checked
Took greyhound recently worst experience ever stranded for hours in Pittsburgh.
Haha I can believe it 🤦🏻♂️
Still so many scaffolds in NYC? It's been over 20 years since that crap started.
scaffoldemic has no end in sight
One time on the Flix bus. The driver yelled and and threatened the passengers.
You haven't had the real New York to Boston bus experience until you've taken Lucky Star
Haha I'm glad the other passengers respected the calm vibe on the bus! This company seems way better than Greyhound now. Such a shame Greyhound has gone so far downhill.
I remember a chick I know put me on to flix bus. I started using them to Boston from CT. Flix bus is legit and 1 time I went to nyc to catch flix to Philly. Missed the bus by minutes and customer service had me board the next bus so great customer service!
Of course, Flixbus now owns Greyhound, so now it's all the same.
Isn't greyhound owned by flixbus already? Are they getting rid of the brand?
Greyhound is at the very bottom of the USA's bus lines. So literally any other bus line will be better.
There aren't really any others, besides a few regionals. Bus travel is just the pits all the way around. Peter Pan may now be the best, and that ain't saying much.
Reno to Vegas. Thought I'd try it instead of flying. No luxury bus. A sprinter van with 12 other people. No one said that was going to be the case. It wasn't even a flix product. It was some random charter. I HATED THIS ENTIRE EXPERIENCE
F FLIXBUS
Flixbus contracts out to charter bus countries that operates all sorts of different buses with their own seating arrangements and pitch. Most charter buses in the US have 56-58 seats because theyre intended for an entirely different customer base. Per contract, Flixbuses dont have to operate branded, just as long as the bus has an operational ADA lift. Greyhound buses have 50-52 seats, so you actually have legroom between seats...which was one of many improvements before they got bought out. With Flixbus being so low, Greyhounds customer base has migrated over. So you wont get a consistent product. Since Flixbus bought Greyhound, which I believe was a big mistake, most of all the stations have been closed as part of Flixbus cost cutting measures, and also presents itself with safety issues for passengers waiting for a bus which have been documented by the media. Flixbuses dont maintain buses, but rather by the contractor.
The flixbus in Europe is a hit and miss type of company. Some of the drivers are not the highest calibre of professionals.
Sometimes the trips are completley boring and uneventful aka. they get the job done as they should and sometimes there's some crazy stuff happening or the driver drives like a lunatic etc.
Nice video. Has anyone ever said you look like the guy from Silicon Valley?
The best FlixBus is in Croatia !!!
Greyhound is the absolute WORST.
But why wouldn’t you just take it from Chinatown if you were already downtown. It’s ultimately faster.
This is really disappointing, waitting one day for the bus and the only option I have to reschedule free.who will pay for wadting the whole day waiting, or it is take it ir leave it.They are almost only one on road so they start cut wifi and not caring about passengers .
Can i pay cash ?
Im very disappointed by this video, Tom. Just puting yourself in front of some Flix-Busses and then moving over to ride with an unknown, other one.
Just by watching how quite it was its obvious that this was not a Flix Bus! This was not _my_ Flixbus. The whole Video is Fake :((((
But jokes aside. At least no puking kids this time ;) You deserved it.
If you get lucky, ya might get an airline ticket for not much more.😊
I was jumped and beaten by a bunch of White hooligans in the UK in 1984, because I was black. So not everywhere is perfect.
People get shot to death at the Chicago greyhound depot.
you realize New York has better air quality in London, right?
Does that make it untrue that the NY air was heavily polluted at that moment?
