    I’m a, computer network, technician entrepreneur for decades, and I’m extremely analytical in problem-solving, and usually do very well. What an honor to listen to Alan “teach me”.. I laughed at the time that when the parents were gone, I pulled the Briggs & Stratton engine off of our lawnmower and bolted it to floor to ceiling window frame in our new addition that was be in no built on the house. Then, I pulled off the back because I wanted to “ see how it worked”. The second I started it up and the oil was sprayed onto the concrete inside the house, after I had “ killed” the engine I looked in amazement at the perfect “oil spray pattern, then looked inside the engine and decided I was done with the self-taught lesson” and decided I was done for the day. Put some oil dry on the concrete, swept everything up, put some more oil in the engine and tested it. “Class dismissed”. Alan strikes me as that type of a guy when he was younger. I’m blown away by his knowledge about everything mechanical. Please keep posting his videos. He’s a great addition to the team… I learn a lot from him “ without starting an oil fire” 😉🤣

    Alen the rack you are rocking back and forth is the injectors rack .Never ever start a Detroit without pulling the valve cover off and making sure NO injectors are stuck.the intake flapper you were talking about earlier is just in case an injector was stuck. OPEN, you can shut all the air off from the intake and kill the motor. Without this, it will run away, and there is nothing you can do to shut the air off it will run full throttle and BLOW THE MOTOR .You're just lucky your fuel problem probably was your life savor on that motor.First thing I do is first secure a way to cut off the intake air ,like a big flat piece of plywood to cover the intake to cut off the air on any diesel engine this will save the motor if it runs away at full throttle. All Detroits, if you are setting anytime at all, you have to see if any injectors are stuck and rotate at least 2 complete rotations and look at all the injectors as the motor is turning by hand .Then you can try to start the engine.Gods favor was on your side on this one.If the air flapper is not free above the intake, just lose it up so you can flip it shut and keep it from running away.Everyone who runs that forklift should be informed how to keep the engine from running away.With the use of the factory flapper.

      He got real lucky, with that Detroit. The governor is under that housing on the external linkage he said didn't appear to work and unhooked. If it would have taken off. Dave likely is building a new shop. They wouldn't haven't gotten it pulled out in time. Looks like a 3-53 Detroit.

  • @wushock92

    I'm guessing one of the injectors was stuck preventing you from moving the rack. Chris managed to break it free releasing the rack. Stuck injectors are a common problem on 2-stroke Detroits that have sat for some time. I learned that from Bus Grease Monkey (Scott Crosby) here on the Tubes. Another masterful resurrection by the Wizard.

    Hey Alan! Great to see you figured out that stuck governor cam. It's a common issue on these older Detroits. When you encounter your next one, make sure to check it before startup. It can be stuck at full throtle in the worst case. Just a little oil and some wiggle action and those cams will turn freely in no-time.

    Most are aware that spinning a coil inside a magnet produces electricity, but as these alternators don't use a permanent magnet no power is generated until the electromagnet is powered, however it can't get any power until it is generated, catch 22!, hence no output until there is a way of electrically exiting that winding. Great video.

    • @DruFishing
      @DruFishing ปีที่แล้ว

      They'll be replacing it eventually or the new owner will. The voltage still needs to be regulated. You can't simply excite the field and leave it in constant this is how you kill the battery and eventually the alternator. Despite the graph (showing when full voltage is produced at higher rpm) the alternator still trickle charges at idle. You rev forklifts constantly when actually using them anyway, just like when he had it rev'd up to actually move less than a crawl on his test drive.
      Simply getting a Gen3 (more modern) architecture alt instead of this externally regulated 2G would have been the best upgrade. Looks like a 3G -1993 Econoline alternator that comes with the double pully would fit those common mounting ears. Or just add an external regulator to this one.

  • @Bob-Whiting
    @Bob-Whiting ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Alan, you shoulda bought the made in USA Power Master (brand name) with the Built-In Regulator, Single Wire with the Small diameter pulley which artificially speeds up the alternator. 13.8 V guaranteed, no additional wiring etc. I bought the 140 amp which charges two batteries no problem, because my Suburban has two batteries AND two A/C units
    and now she charges AT Idle with ALL of the Silverado electrical stuff on full with zero probs! You'll never over-rev it either with just a fork lift. Live and learn like I did. Now You AND I know! Great Video Alan, love your stuff brother. May the Fortress be with you! lol

    Woody Harrelson has really turned around in his career. From Zombie movies to working at Sparks Motors. Pretty Cool.
