We count them all the same in the west. A typical six point whitetail in the east would be a two point coues buck. It's just the way it is. I've lived in the mid west and I'm from the south west and it doesn't matter. It is definitely not something to be right or wrong on. Speak the language when you are in town and don't sweat the small stuff.
I lived in new mexico all my life, and we have both white tail amd mulies, and I've never heard of "not counting" eye guards until a few years ago! Its dumb stop! If its got them, then count them
Out west here we count sides like that always its not just mule deer. Elk are counted the same way everything with points like that out here get counted one side then the other.
Well let me solve this issue for you....I lived in AZ for 20 years grew up calling them a 5X5 or whatever then moved to Florida were everyone referred to them as 9 points or 5 points....it's not mule vs whitetail is where your from....because I showed people what a muley is and they still wanted to call it by points

Interesting
It’s just like that because of the way it is
I think maybe that you could possibly be exactly right
Up north in the states we call em brow tines or brows
Out West we only count tines on one side regardless of species. Eye guards aren’t counted.
Eye guards or Brow tines settle for eye tines

in the west they all the same count one side!!

Sweet bucks but I have no idea I’ve wanted to know that same thing
Thats not how we do it in montana😂 eyeguard on a mulie count. Points are always counted as X not the total number of points
I bet I can count faster
