  • We're in Levi, Lapland, Finland and today is our first time cross country skiing! We went downhill skiing earlier in the week at Levi Ski Resort and now we are taking on the challenge of trying something brand new to both of us at Finland's most popular ski resort.

    We are Jacob and Jenny! We are passionate about traveling the world. We started vlogging our travels in May, 2021 with a goal in mind to travel the world. After visiting Costa Rica and French Polynesia, we realized the time was right to quit our jobs and travel full time. In late 2021, we left everything to become full time travel vloggers and we've loved every minute of it. Our goal is to make it to all seven continents and visit many countries as possible. We hope you will follow along on our journey and that we can inspire you to travel in your own country or around the world!

    There is two types of cross county skiing. People you tryed to imitate are using skate technique and they have skate skiis. You guys however have classic skiis and under your skis there is a gripper that makes skating a little bit diffucult. With classic skis you should use ski trail as it makes it so much easier :) I hope this makes any sense

      Absolutely right! The lateral support from classic boots is also lacking, and makes it more difficult to apply power to your "power" ski, and of course, skate poles are longer since-theoretically-you're sliding faster, so need a longer lever.

    Skiing is a tradition used for winter traveling and hunting across centuries. Skiing has always spent a role in Finland's history from livelihood to warfare. The main thing is to have fun, take risks and enjoy life.

    That was so fun to wahtch. You have to that again. Walking upp a hill with your skiis like a scissor takes some time to learn. And i must give Jenny some cred, it looked so natural when she was skiieng. She bent her knees and balanced on the skiies better. But you both looked like you had fun, and that´s what matters most!👍👀❤

    I'm so proud of you for trying out something new and difficult! It went really well! However, you could have done it much easier for yourselves. To get maximum enjoyment out of your next cross country skiing session, book an skiing instructor for one hour to teach you the basics. Also, your skis are for classic style that work best on the tracks. Enjoy your time in Lapland!

    With parallel skies you should use the middle part of the ski to give you traction to get up hills. You kind of run and simultaneously jump in each step to force with your weight each ski to make contact to the snow with the middle part. When you have weight distributed to both legs then the middle part of the skies shouldn't really touch the snow or ice. The only part of the ski, which has traction, is in the middle. Both ends are as slippery as possible for sliding. Your skiing technique should maximize the use of traction and slippery parts depending on the situation.

    For me it was the other way - started with cross country skiing and then downhill skiing and eventually snowboarding. That's because I live in Helsinki and cross country skiing is really available anywhere in the winter here, many times you can just put on the skis outside your door and there will be a path to follow to the made tracks.

    Well done, Jacob and Jenny! When in Rome, or in this case: When in a Nordic country, you do Nordic skiing! Here's a little nugget of information for you. You've been to my hometown Tromsø in Norway, and it was here that the first cross country skiing competition was held in 1843.

    a lesson would work wonders, and as others have mentioned, there are 2 distinct techniques used, classic & skate. It's difficult to skate on classic equipment, and the same is true of skating on classic gear, although it's a little easier in this case. Most skate since you don't need grip wax, and the knowledge of it's applications in different types of snow. As a former Level II coach, I'd recommend you begin by learning classic technique on "skin" skis, which are a more modern application than the traditional "waxless" fish scales. No ski is "waxless" however. you still wax for glide no matter which you choose. Skating is faster, but requires more muscle groups and works you harder.

  • @mikkolaine4883
    @mikkolaine4883 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now when you learned how not be scared, you can learn to ski. A few things:
    1. You had classic skis with you
    2. You tried to skate with them
    3. You used them in the wrong part of the track (except Jenny found the right spot in the end).
    Classic skis have a sticky part in the middle of the ski under your feet. That is used to give a grippy kick and move forward. You kick to the back and slide forward. Then you add the arms with poles that gives you more power. Classic skiing is done in those parellal tracks only.
    Skating skis are stiffer and they are more springy. You skate exactly like with alpine skis. The skating poles are also longer than classical poles.
    Here are some useful links to begin with =)
