I love these types of videos, do a chicken fried cube-steak & gravy video sometime if you've never had it. It's very cheap and tender.
A few secrets on the BJ's steak, 1. the reason it's cheaper is because it's beef from Canada, hence why there is no USDA Choice sticker on the package. 2. BJ's packages all their fresh cut meat based on prices, meaning that they have a range on what is acceptable to put into a package so you might find 3 smaller steaks or 2 larger steaks in a package. 3. Their 100% money back promise is no joke, they literally take back anything no matter how much was left or whatever the customer did to the piece of meat.
Where I used to work which was at fry's they had Prime, Choice, and Wagyu even it was amazing to work there. their prices were actually pretty reasonable at one point their Wagyu was cheaper then the steaks you bought at Walmart funny enough. Although the Wagyu grade was fluctuating from A1 - A4 it was still good stuff.

Guga! Man from England here. I love the vids. You’ve single-handedly improved my steak cooking/eating experience. Couldn’t agree more, thicker is better. More over those that don’t "KNOW” you can give them any old steak. They see steak, they’re happy. Me… has to come from my butcher, thick, dry aged. Restaurant steaks make me sad now😢 Keep up the good work.
finally a video that is something i can relate to i could watch you guys going to popular stores and teaching us what to look for when buying meat. im gonna guess guga's favorite restaurant is a local asian place thats why nobody will ever guess it
This is the right answer if you don't have a good local butcher. Don't like the ones cut at Costco, buy the whole thing and cut them yourself. You will save at least $2 a lb and usually a lot more.
Man i would pay good money for the guga experience. Ive always loved steak, but Guga has brought a new appreciation for me to steak, and even my family and friends like the steaks i cook for them thanks to Guga!
Hey Guga can we see a seasoning experiment? Season before the sear, after the sear, and then after the cook. 3 steaks seasoned at 3 different points, let's see how this goes!
It's taco bell or KFC. My Walmart has prime steaks. I know not every Walmart does, but mine does. Can't tell you why mine does though. I also have an HEB with prime steaks as well as a Costco, Whole Foods, and Fiesta Foods. There are also a few meat markets too. Out of all of them, Costco has the best steaks I have access to. Also, Costco is only slightly more expensive than Walmart. My only issue with Costco is the fact that it is a massive pain in the butt going there. The place is always packed. I end up spending 10+ minutes circling the parking lot with dozens of other cars looking for a spot. Then I have to walk a mile to back of the store after to get the steak to wait forever in a line to walk another mile back to my car. Sometimes I feel it is worth it, but usually not. I end up usually grabbing HEB which is about on the level as whole foods, just cheaper.
My biggest issue with Costco steaks is that they blade tenderize them all. That's why the package always recommends cooking to 165F. Now, that being said, I've never had an issue with their meats, but if someone is very sensitive or immune compromised, they might want to go with another store that doesn't blade tenderize just to be extra safe.
Walmart steaks are hit and miss. I've had some that looked great but weren't and some that looked just okay but were very tender and flavorful. They do have thick cut ribeyes and prime ribeyes. You need to go when the shelves are full or catch someone to bring more from the back to give you a better selection.
We have a grocery store chain nearby called Market Basket which is generally perceived of as being for poorer people, but is one of the few places around here that has prime grade beef on display.
I'm sitting here trying to learn how to identify the best steak, wondering if we have Prime and Choice here in Sweden. Then I realize I'm eating macaroni with ketchup right now, meat is not an option either way.
Prime and Choice are terms that are used by the USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, I’m not sure what Sweden has but they most likely have their own different method of categorizing steaks since all the ones used by Guga from grocery stores are all going to be from the US, hence USDA
We dont have any grading system in sweden for meat. There are stores that make their own gradings however. Like "Ica" (Swedish grocery store) has "Ica Select"which is steaks with better marbeling. Altho most of the time even those are not in the "Prime" range. Also all steaks in swedish grocery stores are thin. The ones we call thick here is what guga said was thin in this video. If you want to get ahold of good meats go to a local butcher or to a "Saluhall" and have someone cut the steak in front of you after you selected out what you want. Another good place to find good marbeled meat is "LIDL" belive it or not. They usually have very nice beef there.
You should check out the channel TheWolfePit. He has tons of videos of good recipes on an extreme budget. Though he's in America so you might not have all the same stores.
a good restraurant to go to would be one in Texas called murphy's steakhouse it in a little town called winchester the steaks they make their are really good and the weight shown on the menu is the same after it has been cooked
In my local supermarket, the steak is a whole horseshoe, wanna break your teeth - go for it. I'm always feeling jealous of Guga cooking all those great steaks. 😅
In romania its bad too. We dont have a usda ranking system but if we would, they would be no grade. The filet mignon has the same marbeling (almost none) as steaks that are 40 50 dollars/ kg
same in germany with local german cows, ZERO marbeling. I only buy imported stuff from US or australia which mostly turns out good but still not guga level
Get it online if you can. That’s what I’d suggest but I know that still can’t help everyone. I have pretty good selection here in stores but I do want to eventually get some stuff online.
Angel is awesome! The interplay between Guga and Angel is the most interesting part of the show. I love all the episodes he is on. Keep up the great work guys, awesome 👏
Walmart and a lot of other stores like them cut their steaks thin because they don't keep track of sales by weight or overall profit, they keep track of it by units sold. So the thinner you cut your steaks, the more packages or units of meat you can make with one ribeye roast. The More units sold, the larger the managers bonuses and department budgets. That's why it's so common to see sad thin sliced steaks at big name grocery stores. It's also the reason why deli meats and similar items are rarely ever sold in quantities of over a half a pound.
Guga is using like- or better-quality meats and similar cooking processes but with more attention to detail, so there's no chance a steakhouse will make it better.
I LOVE your videos!! I now live in Florida and reluctantly tried a Walmart steak… to my surprise, it was great!! DONT buy the cheap ones ( white styrofoam) but the black… and even better, the Blue Styrofoam are awesome!!!
I will never buy supermarket steak ever again. I only ever buy from a butcher now. Thanks to this channel, I have a lot more experience buying and cooking great steak. Cheers!
Costco Blade tenderizes its steak. Increases risk of E coli, hence why they have to recommend cooking to 160 F. Thus, if you do not like well done steak, better to avoid it.
I'd like to see you have someone like angel cook and season the "bad" ribeye steaks, choice and select and then premium steaks like prime and wagyu, and cut them into bite sized pieces. Make about 20-30 pieces, 7-8 of each and have you attach which category each bite is from. I personally can''t tell a huge difference between them all...just curious how accurate you would be Guga. Of course the bites would be random and unknown to you.
All three stores get their meat from Swift or national and one other when I can't remember that set the difference from store to store is actually how they cut the meat after it gets out of the package Whole Foods avoid the bandsaw except to cut through the bone everything else is hand-cut hand-trimmed just like Publix Walmart uses a band saw to cut their steaks you'd be surprised but just by taking care with the way that you process the meat once you take it out of the package makes that big of a difference also how they store the food contribute greatly
My local grocery store, FoodCity, usually has prime steak. Until fairly recently I had never paid the extra for prime. Man I didn't know what I was missing. I went to Costco a few weeks back and tried their prime strip steaks and was amazed by the tenderness and flavor
That whole discussion about not ordering steaks at restaurants (bc they’ll be disappointed) made my steak and cheese subway sandwich a little more bland🥲
Hi Guga, My favorite place to buy steak in Miami is from Martinez Distributors in Hialeah. They sell only the whole ribeye or striploin, but that way I can slice it myself. It would be nice to do this comparison again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world
The grocery store near my place has choice rib-eyes for 8.99/lb, and they sell it as a roast. They will cut it for you to what ever thickness you want. Usually I get 6 1.5 inch thick steaks out of it for $45-50, and it's also well trimmed. Just had some for dinner tonight using your technique of pan searing it and then baking in the oven until up to 135, was FRICKING PHENOMENAL. Best steak I've had in a long time. Thanks for the enlightenment on how to properly cook a steak Guga, this is life changing.👍👍❤❤🍻🍻Cheers to you from Toronto

@@MrMartinSchou Yep, British and can confirm, some of them are just more blatant about it than others, can't really blame them, because at the end of the day they're trying to get rid of that stock before it goes off but the smart shop managers put that stuff on offer to get rid of it instead of trying to be cheeky by moving it to the front and charge full price.
Am not American and don’t live in America but I think they do guga tried all the meats there and there was a very thin ribeye
that's how you move perishable products
I do that everytime I look for packaged meat.
You should do another episode of this with other grocery stores. Here’s a good list to go from on top of what you’ve done here:
Target
Sam’s Club
Costco
Grocery Outlet
Publix
Not from Florida, but i tried looking up a few from there besides nationwide chains!
You and Angel cook steak the exact same way my grandmother did. Salt, pepper and garlic powder, red in the middle. It was probably her best recipe since it's what my Grandpa loved the most, but she's got a lot of good ones, and the best ones are all simpler than you'd expect.
3. Their 100% money back promise is no joke, they literally take back anything no matter how much was left or whatever the customer did to the piece of meat.
as does Costco's as far as the return take back
you gave me the confidence to cook steaks, I know nothing about cooking but thanks to you I can make myself a pretty good pan seared steak, thank you!
I wish GUGA would do this with more grocery stores.....including Costco of course!
I'm hearing that some Costco's sell Japanese wagyu . I have no idea because the closest Costco to me 500km away lol.
@@zymbotictoot They always have many cuts of prime, Wagyu is not commonly available in warehouse but it has been. Wagyu is always available on their website (I've never seen it out of stock)
I was about to comment Costco. I just got 4 prime ribeyes last weekend for about $24/steak. Way better than the steaks from walmart, whole foods, etc.
@@zymbotictoot they have prime at costco, not sure about jp wagyu tho
Stay away from the worm fish store.…AKA Costco
HONESTLY, I will NEVER hate on Walmart steak. I literally buy a picanha from Walmart all the time (Once a week, for months already) and it’s always been absolutely delicious!!! I live in Chico California very up north of California so I don’t know if that makes a difference or what. But it’s always been amazing!
I like the fact that he is pointing out that you get better quality steak at a local store and it’s cheaper. Keep up the great work with your videos I would love to have a steak made by you For one reason you actually care about what you’re making
walmart actually has prime strip and ribeyes now, in a blue package. theyre not as good as other prime steaks i've had, but theyre definitely a step up from choice, and theyre an inch and a quarter thick. they also run about $15 a steak, which really isnt bad.
It’s not bad for sure for the quality of steak. But I’ll definitely pay $20-$25 a pound for some real good prime steak.
Hey Guga, just got some sous vide equipment for Christmas this year, cooked a few steaks tonight and the tenderness was amazing! Thanks for all the videos!
This man never runs out of content. Much love❤️
finally a video that is something i can relate to i could watch you guys going to popular stores and teaching us what to look for when buying meat.
im gonna guess guga's favorite restaurant is a local asian place thats why nobody will ever guess it
Costco is honestly the best top store to buy steaks from, value and quality are great. Great video as always Guga 🤝📈.
This is the right answer if you don't have a good local butcher. Don't like the ones cut at Costco, buy the whole thing and cut them yourself. You will save at least $2 a lb and usually a lot more.
Costco's whole pichana is unbeatable.
True for whole cuts but read my comment farther up on blade tenderizing at Costco.
Why would you even buy from a store ?
A butcher shop is always cheaper and better
I've tried steaks from everywhere. Costco wins hands down.
Man i would pay good money for the guga experience. Ive always loved steak, but Guga has brought a new appreciation for me to steak, and even my family and friends like the steaks i cook for them thanks to Guga!

That’s how they get ya. Bread fill you up faster.
@@ImFromIowa It's not a buffet though lol, they actually lose money if you fill up too fast, while buffets make money the quicker you fill up.
Hey Guga! Love your channel. You’ve taught me a lot about how to make basic Walmart meat tasty.
Hey Guga can we see a seasoning experiment? Season before the sear, after the sear, and then after the cook. 3 steaks seasoned at 3 different points, let's see how this goes!
Nice
I think he did that on this channel and the souse vide one as well
6:53 damn, thats exactly the product i need 😂
Howdy fellow Texan!
My Costco cuts the cap off of the prime ribeye and sells it separately. Does yours?
@@jonschmidt1545 depends on what you ask for. If you want the prepackaged ones they have them separated, but you can ask for them together at mine.
Walmart steaks are hit and miss. I've had some that looked great but weren't and some that looked just okay but were very tender and flavorful. They do have thick cut ribeyes and prime ribeyes. You need to go when the shelves are full or catch someone to bring more from the back to give you a better selection.
The Neighborhood Market Walmarts generally have prime, but all of their steaks are ugly AF.
@@ubern3rd I don't go to those.
@@marcgarrett5427 Just figured I'd mention it, in case you miss out at the super centers.
Some Walmarts do carry prime and Australian wagyu depending on the location.

@@Union4014 it's pretty good actually

Only seen marketside "wagyu" in my Walmart. And those aren't even real wagyu
Look out for angus beef and decent marbling. You dont need a grade at all to identify a good steak.
You should check out the channel TheWolfePit. He has tons of videos of good recipes on an extreme budget. Though he's in America so you might not have all the same stores.
Bro i feel you my ass always looking at the steaks lol, then i come home and eat a bowl of cereal or ramen

@@marculetzc1366 same here in bulgaria
same in germany with local german cows, ZERO marbeling. I only buy imported stuff from US or australia which mostly turns out good but still not guga level
Get it online if you can. That’s what I’d suggest but I know that still can’t help everyone. I have pretty good selection here in stores but I do want to eventually get some stuff online.
Imagine being the CEO of Wallmart and getting Guga in his recommended, going off on your steaks in the store 😁

Next time include Costco they have the best streaks and good prices
Isn't BJ a Costco by another
Costco Blade tenderizes its steak. Increases risk of E coli, hence why they have to recommend cooking to 160 F. Thus, if you do not like well done steak, better to avoid it.
Costco meat is garbage
wdym by best streaks?
You can always get the whole loin of meat that isn’t blade tenderized
