  • The Medusa Touch was a 1978 supernatural horror thriller starring Richard Burton. He plays the role of novelist John Morlar, a misanthropic man who possesses supernatural telekinetic powers. He doesn't hesitate to use these against those who wrong him, causing death and disaster.
    .
In this scene, John Morlar proves his telekinetic power to consulting psychiastrist, Dr. Zonfeld (played by a terrified Lee Remick), by making a Boeing airliner crash on what is made to be George Marsh's 1966 Centre Point, a fine display of Modernist architecture and one of the first of London's skyscrapers. Centre Point had remained mostly vacant for over a decade at that point, and made news in 1974 when a group of protesters occupied it to protest the towers vacancy, dubbing it "the concrete symbol of everything that is rotten in our society".
    .
Lack of CGI technology at the time meant that the tower model used in the scene wasn't a very accurate representation of Centre Point. According to IMDB, "the Boeing 747 model used was a nine-foot (2.7 meters) long former travel agents window model made out of perspex by Space Models of Feltham. The model was suspended twenty feet (six meters) above the floor of Shepperton Studios for its fifty-yard (45.7 meters) run to the office block."

This entry is first in a new series where I will be sourcing scenes from old films starring great Modernist and Brutalist architecture and art. You can check out my history and architecture tours and walks at www.explorabilia.co.uk
