- The Murphy family (Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams and Danny Pino) sing 'Requiem' a song about how they refuse to mourn the loss of Connor from their different perspectives.
What is Dear Evan Hansen (2021) about?
A screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Tony, Grammy and Emmy award winning Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect films) reprises his role as Evan Hansen, an anxious, isolated high-school student who's aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social media age. He soon embarks on a journey of self-discovery when a letter he wrote for a writing exercise falls into the hands of a grieving couple whose son took his own life.

the saddest thing about this song is that it’s the first time we’ve heard amy adams sing since enchanted
I honestly forgot Amy could sing I was watching this movie in theaters and my brother was a freaking mess and Amy sang and while he was bawling, I said happily, oh yeah Amy Adams was in Enchanted and she sang, oh cool!
no she sang in the muppets which came out after enchanted
@@ajdefusco3450 Glad someone remembered that she was in The Muppets as well besides just Enchanted.
Let’s not forget: Not only did Amy Adams sang in Enchanted. After that, she also sang in The Muppets which came out 4 years later after that
I love her rendition of "If I didn't care", in "Miss Pettigrew lives for a day". I'd love to see her in more musicals
I think it's interesting that there are two completely different ways that you can interpret Zoey's part of the song. A girl who doesn't want to admit she doesn't care her brother is dead, or a girl who thought she hated her brother but doesn't want to admit there are some good memories in there, too.
Alternative 3rd way: mix of both, and the reckoning of grief when you've got to deal with both
No the messed up part is that the the only good “memories” are lies from Evan. Connor had no redeeming qualities - Evan’s lies make he feel this way. It’s especially heartbreaking for his mom to sing “in these words I finally find you” because those are all Evan’s words not Connor’s
We're never gonna know, in the end. I imagine he's her brother and she likely has some good memories, too. Not that it's always the case or that the good memories will cancel out the abuse for people irl, or that even all people HAVE good memories. But we only know the bad of their relationship.
@@roseJ96 They definitely has some good memories 3:48
The strength of Kaitlyn’s performance in this film made me wish there was an alternate universe where Zoey is the protagonist of “Dear Evan Hansen” and it’s told from her perspective.
If I watch the movie it’s only cuz I want to her acting, I see her on last man standing as Eve
@@connorkelemen5815you should see her performance in Booksmart. She does a great job.
I just want Kaitlyn to play Ellie in season of HBO's TLOU adaptation, cause she looks like part 2 Ellie, Bella looks like a 14 year old, and it will be weird and uncomfortable to see her in some of the part 2 scenes, both the okes with Dina of course, but also the violent ones...
Zoey is in denial that everyone is forgetting about all the negative things.
Larry is angry
Cynthia is accepting Connor's death.
Despite, the fact that they dropped key elements from the musical I think they did a great job depicting the stages of grief.
But Cynthia is accepting based on the fake emails. On a lie…
I hated they cut conners points out
They are all the stages of grief…
I'm sorry but I disagree, I don't think that Cynthia is accepting Connor's death, instead I see that she's negotiating through his (false) letters.
@@Flora_Dawn connor doesn’t have a part in this song.
I love how they are all grieving in totally different ways, anger, bitterness, solace. Grieving someone you had a complicated relationship with is hard to define, this does it perfectly and beautifully.
Omg her driving the car gave me chills! Love that part they put in!
That may actually be just in her head.
Same I thought she was going to hurt her self when I first saw the movie last week
@@bentalkschelsea8600 I wish she hurt herself tbh. She should know better than to drive over the speed limit.
It this were to happen to the person playing zoey in reality, she would have either died, got badly injured or end up in bad condition meaning she would barely be able to walk again
Honestly when they all harmonize at 2:15, I like it even more than the original. It sounds so good
I love your profile picture ✨✨✨
@@keniaquintero5230 love yours too 🧚🏻♀️🧚🏻♀️
Its because they have a bigger editing budget for the singing.
@@jordanhenare7068 also cause their voice just sound so good together
They do that harmony in the original
2:17 this moment with the parallels between everyone in the family absolutely kills me
I really love how the film allows for more freedom in how you show parts of the story. The shots of them going about their lives and people around them looking at them is simply not possible in the theater version but it adds so much to the performance. Not to diss the theater version, of course. I just love these extra bits of expression the film format allows
Yeah it’s too bad this and Sincerely me are the only two how take advantage of the formula. Most of the others are incredibly boringly shot.
Also, Requiem is objectively one of the best songs of the movie given the context of the story. While Sincerely Me is the best song for most and the most fun in the musical, Requiem was a more touching and heartfelt song, and not surprisingly coming the from the family who just lost a son and brother to Zoe.
I like the shots, but i think they are poorly timed because the way each family member comes in is very specifically heartbreaking (Zoe: why should I lie and say
Dad & Zoe: my world has gone / dark without
Mom: / I can see
Mom Dad & Zoe: your light)
and by not staging them together (or even just having them lip-sync) you can’t really see how each member is saying something totally different but all building towards “your light” - and that’s much harder to follow in this version…
The build up and harmonies at 2.17 will always be the best musical moment of the show
YES
2:17
THANK YOU!! I so agree! Was playing this song for my sister (who loves the show) and mentioned it was one of my favorite songs. She was like, "really? I don't skip it but I'm not a fan." I told her I love it because of the how they are each experiencing a different pain, and it is just so dang beautiful, especially those HARMONIES!!
Yes this is the only moment I cried and got full body chills from the movie
200th like and 5th reply but seriously it is the honestly so beautiful
This is the angriest version of Zoey I have seen and... I love it
I relate to Zoe very much. My brother has bipolar disorder and it’s very hard to love and feel sympathy for people who inflict so much pain upon you. I know they’re struggling inside, but it doesn’t excuse the pain they cause. You love them, cause their your brother, but a part f you also hates them. It’s complicated but I feel like this movie, for all of its many faults, did a good job with Zoe and Connor’s troubled relationship.
I get it. It’s not easy being as patient & understanding as Zoe & Connor’s mom was
Oh yeah. How easy do you make it for them then.
@@laurenpatrick4609 what do you mean?
@@dr.little7311 when people are in pain inside even the smallest of things can cause them to lash out. Feels like the whole world is against you
@@laurenpatrick4609 Yeah, it’s very tough. But you try your best, cause you love them.
the fact that they sang it live makes me more emotional
I was thinking that it sounded different like it wasn’t recorded in a studio. I didn’t know they sung the songs live.
@@yeontan6745 That explains why the voices sound better and much clearer in the soundtrack version
Wish they let Danny Pino sing To Break In A Glove. He has a great voice.
Petition for Kaitlyn to play Ellie in HBO TLOU season 2!
The acceleration and braking on that car is insane, honestly
Kaitlynn Dever is phenomenal. Amazing as a singer and even better an actress. This girl will win an Oscar at some point
I’ve heard mostly not spectacular reviews about this movie as a whole, but this song is one of the parts that hits hardest imo and I’m glad they did a good job with it in this scene
Hearing Amy Adams sing again gave me literal goosebumps!
It's criminal that all they let Amy sing is two lines in this
Ikr? They really should have had anybody have a map, I feel like it would actually fit really well in a movie setting. Or I wish they could have brought back a little bit of light from the pre Broadway version of the show. It would have been a great song for her.
@@ThatFandubGirl or "in the bedroom down the hall", i always wondered how would it have sound sung by her and moore
Exactly! I thought this movie would go down the pre-Broadway approach, showing us a show that could’ve been (and frankly the original vision), bringing back A Part of Me, A Little Bit of Light and In the Bedroom Down the Hall considering they still need more exposure, but nope. It went the opposite end, cutting even more of the mothers’ songs and glorifying Evan even more
@@kinn0401I seriously hope someone else (not a major studio) purchases film rights to the musical and makes a proper adaptation.
@@ginonovanta she had more than two lines?
This was a beautiful rendition by Amy, Danny and Kaitlyn, and highlights the conflicted emotions of losing a loved one.
I knew she'd be fine but my heart still dropped and I was yelling when she's speeding down the highway and takes her hands off the wheel.
I feel like they're all denying Connor's death.
Zoe is sad, but at the same time she is kinda relieved he's gone because she knows that he's never been nice to her.
Cynthia is negotiating with the letters
and
Larry is just angry at Connor for throwing his life away, even though he wasn't a good stepdad he deeply cared for Connor.
This was always my favorite DEH song and I can say they did a great job with it here in the movie. It gives me the same feeling and sadness when listening to it as in the musical, seeing how Zoey, Cynthia and Larry approach their grief in different ways and with the meanings behind it for each one 💙😢💔
Katlyn Dever was the perfect casting for Zoe Murphy.
Maybe, though I feel like her voice is just a little bit short.
Petition for Kaitlyn to play Ellie in HBO TLOU season 2!
I know Ben was amazing in Broadway. Perfect even but if he hadn't been in this movie it might've been one of the best movies of the year because the songs are just so good.
ben was just _one_ of the problems with this movie...
@@save_bandit you can't tell me creepy looking Ben was not the only thing you focus on when he's on camera. I mean look at this scene. Its perfect.
Think how iconic it might have been with one of the newer Evans…
@@misaelolvera6232 He didn't look creepy. But whatever.
@@misspriss2482 lol I wonder you might look like if that's what you think.
I don't know why but there's something unintentionally funny about the shot where she's timidly walking down the grocery aisle with a huge sign that just says 'MILK'

Thank god they were able to get this scene right.
I've never related to a character in a musical as much as I do Zoe....
As someone who's lost a sibling....
This musical saved my life and the movie I think was pretty good at retelling the story
Easily the best part in the whole movie. The rest of it is a mess....but this is perfection.
Ehhh the music Individually and how they visualize it is great but everything else outside of it is a mess
Amy's back must've hurt for carrying the movie. Also the "Sincerely Me" sequence was absolutely excellent

Been a fan of Danny Pino since Cold Case, and hearing him sing (finally) made me so happy!
Omg cold case and svu!!!! I was desperate to hear him sing when I saw he was cast in this and he’s actually quite good. They should have given him more.

a bit late but did you see lucy? (2003) he sings in it too. I follow danny since that movie and loved (almost, not the shield, that was ridiculous) every performance since, especially cold case

@@TaraConway16 you should it's amazing!
Danny Pino was SO GOOD in this movie
This movie mad me cry because I touched my heart 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I've never cried so hard at a film until this came out. There was one point i had to leave the screen for a moment i was in because of how overwhelmed i was emotionally
I wish they put more of the mums songs in the movie because amy adams has an amazing voice
That part with the car though
😮😦😲
Goosebumps
I know a lot of people didn't like this movie mainly because of the weaker vocal performances like Kaitlin Dever (Zoe) and Julianne Moore (Heidi), but they proved in nearly all of their scenes that what they lacked in singing ability they more than made up for with their acting, and that's part of what I love about the movie. Kaitlin Dever brought Zoe's pain and anger to life on the big screen and it was believable. Julianne Moore brought Heidi's wit and her love for her son to life on the big screen and it showed. It's not always about who's the best singer
Glad they did one of my favorite songs from the show justice. Still haven’t finished the movie, but glad I watched this scene before so 💙
Everyone here sounds PHENOMENAL! 👏😭
This song is my story. It’s so hard to love someone who only causes pain and destruction.
People who have killed themselves are not doing it to cause pain. They are in so much pain that it feels like the knot way out. It feels like you are trapped and nothing you can do will help. It's truly heartbreaking really
Same.
You don’t have to love anyone if you don’t want to. Nobody that makes you hurt and sadness intentionally or all the time should be in your life they don’t deserve your love

First time listening to this song without context but this song broke my heart. I love it.
Out of all the scenes in the movie, this section gave me the most chills
Danny and amy were the best part of the movie
poor Zoey she deserves all the best, it's hard for me to empathize with her brother, I hate people who hurt others! Regardless of whether the person is sick or not, aggression is never the answer.
The saddest thing about this song is in the musicals original script it is sung by both Conner and Zoe in the moments before he takes his life. In it a part of the lyric by Conner goes something along the lines of "I don't want a requiem, I won't get a requiem" as if implying that he doesn't believe he deserves one, it also gives an insight (much like the book I think) into his last thoughts, his last moments and the last call he makes to Miguel where he calls to say goodbye. Miguel tries to dissuade him from taking his life but Conner hangs up with a "..too late". Again not sure if these were in the book, it's been a while since I last read it but I can say in the original script we are given insight into who the ACTUAL Conner is, not Evans made up version. And we are able to see that like Evan, Conner is extremely broken on the inside. He also says something along the lines in his version of requiem that mentions"...being a burden to the people I love" in reference to his family.
Long paragraph ik but that's what makes this song hurt so much more is knowing it was originally a duet between two siblings before one dies.
Also to note: In the original version, he also talks about whether or not they'll find him 'under the tree' in the park, which is confirmed where they did find him although not mentioned in the revised version of the script. Apparently, (might be wrong) he left school halfway through the day (as in the day where he meets Evan) and takes his life that afternoon using pills.
Extra note: it's sad that Conner was in fact right, he knew (or at least he thought) they'd be better off without him, hence they would not sing a requiem for him. Since he didn't see his death as a loss for them, only a gain. He pretty much called it, saying he wouldn't get a requiem because he knew (or he thought) he hadn't done anything to deserve one.
Edit: it also makes me think of "if I could tell her" because it was obvious he held some sort of protectivness over Zoe at school and some of that song is what Connor might have actually wanted to say.
Where did you get this info, I would love to learn more.
Wow. I read the book and listen to the soundtracks a billion times and didn’t know about this. All that was in the DC version?
Miguel is a figment of the novel only. And he only failed to respond to the text. No dissuading. He was in class and couldn’t respond.
@@lanetower3411 I'm only pointing out what I read in the the original script not the novel. The script was known to have undergone some major editing to get version we have on broadway today.
Most actors can sing because they were the theatre kids that made it
I just watched this film for the first time tonight, and I was so blown away by the guy from Cold Case singing 😭 his voice is incredible
he sang a lot in the movie Lucy from 2003 and was incredible even back then.
I figured he'd be more well known for Detective Nick Amaro (Sp?) on Law & Order SVU.

They are. Most of the singing in the movie was done live on set. They had to dub some parts here and there but it was mostly live

This movie made me so emotional
Judging by the comments I’m glad I saw the movie and haven’t seen the play yet because I loved this movie so much 🤷🏾♂️
how is this song when sung by Kaitlyn (zoe) somehow too much emotion and also not enough? HOW
I think she had too much emotion in the voice rather than the face
The one bright spot in the movie.
3:07
This girl's good. Really got the emotion there.
Kaitlyn Dever is probably the best part of the movie. Unlike Ben Platt, she was believable as a teenager. While her voice is not as strong as either Laura Dreyfuss or Mallory Bechtel (my 2 favorite Zoes), she sings well and expertly conveys Zoe's conflicting emotions about her brother.
I think this is honestly the best part of this movie. THe only thing that I would change is that Kaitlyn has the guitar in the beginning of the scene; it would have been cool if the song began with her playing the intro herself. Missed opportunity.
The Murphy Dad being a "Stepdad" was such a fresh change to the movie and it made more sense. But this movie is still underwhelming. Justice for "Anybody have a Map"
Not sure how they managed to cut all three of my favourite songs (disappear, good for you, anybody have a map)
And Good for you.
God, one of the best things of this musical is that it shows how everyone is affected by Evan and what he do. The parents perspective makes you empathize with them.
Was he not a stepdad in the stage show?
@@joewhitehead3 No, he was their bio dad

Great performance. My only qualm is it feels like the actress for Zoe wasnt able to showcase her full abilities because of the tempo. If it started just a bit slower it would have allowed her to built more on that emotion. Then again not super surprising seeing as the musical directors in this movie definetly took a different take than the broadway version and what many fans of the musical wanted.

I really liked this movie. It's not perfect, but the performances are all great(despite Ben Platt's odd makeup), and the story still feels natural and human, especially in these three. Not every character was adapted as well as the Murphys(Jared and Alana in particular got the short end of the stick a bit), but they nailed these three.
