    Chugach is an Alaskan native word pronounced choo-gach not koo-gach. But this was a great review video.

      Ha! Thanks! Yep...apologies to KUIU and Alaskans for butchering that one!

    Great review! Really appreciated the layering portion of the video and is something I usually don't see in these types of videos. It's good to know that a puffy layers well with this jacket.

    Hi Mark,
    I've watched a number of the your reviews and really appreciate your objective approach in doing so. This video helped me in deciding what size to choose based on how I plan to use the jacket. Thanks much for your efforts.

    Just so you know, it's named after the Chugach mountain range in Alaska--where I live--and it's pronounced like chew-gach.

    I have the Teton Rain Gear and it is not waterproof. I get soaked in it. Problem is Kuiu won't accept returns if you wear it outside, so I'm stuck with it until I decide to pony up more money for something better. I've heard the more expensive Kuiu rain gear like Chugach is great, but the Teton rain gear line has not served me well.

    I love my KUIU gear but I sometimes struggle with sizing. I am 5'11" at 212 pounds with broad shoulders and a slightly barreled chest area. I have tried the XL size (my usual size) for shirts, jackets, and vests but I find them too tight. When I go up to XXL the garments fit well but then the sleeves are too long and with the KUIU pants the legs are WAY too long - kinda have short legs, I use a 30" inseam. Anyway, KUIU makes some great gear but I just wish they would either offer more size options or just abandon the "athletic" fit. Every time I buy a KUIU piece I usually have to take it to a tailor to fix the problems and that adds to the overall final cost.

    Could a guy just purchase the top and bottom Chugach rain gear and use it as an outer layer, throw on some merino wool base layering, and leave the house? I'll be hunting Idaho and Oregon. Trying to save some cabbage where I can.
    Thanks.

    I live in a tropical climate here in Hawaii where it can storm and still be 80 degrees out. Will I heat up in this or is it breathable enough to still move around in it when temperatures are above 70 and raining without breaking too much of a sweat? Thanks!

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James I’ve not worn this jacket in 80 degree weather. All I can say is that this jacket breathes very well for rain gear. It also has pit zips for ventilation which I’ve used when hiking and they dump heat well. I’ve worn it with only a short sleeved base layer while hiking in a thunderstorm and it didn’t feel clammy. Hope that helps a bit w your question.

    Thanks for saying you normally wear the Medium in Kuiu but still went with Medium in rain gear, was wondering if I needed to go up to Large so I could get clothes under, but I'll def go for Medium, thanks

    Question. Durability? I'm hunting western Washington, tons of rain, Salal, huckleberry, blackberries. Will it hold up ?

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where I hunt, I push through sage and mahogany. Glassing, I often sit on or lean against granite and lava cap. The jacket seems appropriately durable for these activities. I don't have any issues yet.

      I did a ton of upland bird and rabbit hunting in the catskills this winter. Real thick evergreens and briars and did over 25 miles in 2 days. When i packed my jacket up i had a 2 1/2" L shaped tear on one of the arms. I ordered the repair tape through Kuiu and it is as good as new.

  • @danielellisporter

    Methinks if you need a heavier down you won't need that Kuiu shell. Everything will be frozen. No need for a ton of waterproofing at least on your jacket. pants are a different story. good video. can't stand the owner of kuiu but that doesn't take away from product I guess

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The product itself is of the highest quality in my opinion. I wear this shell all winter..

    Do you also have the pant? I'm wondering if the "sound" from rubbing on itself is louder or soften then the Yukon pant.

    What kuiu pack do you use?

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D M I have the 3200 and the 5200. I use the 3200 for 1-3 day outings and the 5200 for 4+ days. I recently used the 5200 for a 14 day 200 mi trek on the John Muir Trail finishing on the top of Mt Whitney. It worked flawlessly.

  • @ezskanken
    @ezskanken 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about the pant. You think a merino wool base layer and the super down pant from KUIU would fit under the Chugach pant?

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't own the Chugach pant but if it has a similar fit as the jacket, I would be inclined to say "yes."

    Hi, Great review. What are your findings about durability and abrasion caused by a heavy backpack? Especially around the top of the shoulders and around the back of the hood.

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have almost no signs of wear and no leaks. I actually wear this as my primary rain jacket - not just backpacking. The jacket is one of the most solid investments I've made in gear. I don't bring it on every backpacking trip - in the summer I go with a lighter weight jacket. Hope that helps!

    temperature rating? I've seen on their website 32-45 degrees and was wondering if i could be used where i live in Florida to up in the 60's - 70's??

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@fortunateson5587 Temperature ratings are tricky. It’s a shell w no insulation so it’s ability to keep one warm is dependent on what you wear underneath. In warmer temps it will trap heat like any other “breathable” shell. That being said, it does have pit zips that help dump heat, which is very helpful. Hope that helps!

    How is the noise of the fabric compared to say the guide coat, or the Teton?

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Casey Taylor I cannot comment by comparison as I do not own those other two jackets. However, for a fully waterproof, breathable jacket the chugach is very quiet. Compared to my Marmot Precip it is downright stealthy.

    Where can I get the green version? All I see on their website is camo

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Rigsby the color of the jacket is officially Major Brown and is a part of Kuiu’s solid color line. If it is currently unavailable, wait a bit. They will probably be making a new run sometime in the near future. Cheers!

    If this has a hood why don't you demonstrate showing it while doing any of the shows for the clothing ?

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was trying to keep the video short while focusing primarily on the fit of the jacket as well as my overall experience and impressions. There many other features not covered as well, such as the pockets and pit zips. I'll just say that the hood is very adjustable and compared to the three rain jackets I review on my channel this jacket is far and away the top quality, fit and feel. Thanks for watching.
