"It might not be obvious to you, and you certainly won't find it in any of our nation's written laws, policies or codes, but if you ask Nancy Denton, she'll tell you America's own brand of apartheid is alive and well in ""the land of the free"".
This ongoing racial segregation is manifested throughout America-in our neighborhoods, and in the housing patterns of every major city.
    Portland is no exception.
Professor Denton, co-author of an award-winning book on the subject of racial segregation in America, will today examine the link between segregation in cities across the country-even here, in our hometown-and the unemployment, poverty, and deep feelings of despair and abandonment that have resulted.
What steps must be taken to eliminate segregation in our cities? What can we, as a society, do to erase American apartheid, decrease the ranks of the underclass, and rebuild a sense of community in our city?"
