In comparison to last week's game which was an example of a comprehensive victory, this one was all about the bonuses. Open's very good 18/27 conversion rate was the reason for their triumph vs UCL's still OK offering of 15/30, but 175 almost guarantees a return in the HSL round after that rather rousing comeback. Another +350 aggregate score is also very pleasing as plenty of questions are being answered with not much obvious stalling; long may it continue ;). Interestingly as a bit of random trivia, Mr Maving for Open and Mr Jack for UCL were the reserves for last year's teams, so it is nice to see them both get a go on screen this time ;).
I have just returned from 23 years overseas in South East Asia. My Tuesdays were always brightened by Dave Garda's uploads and the community comments. I can now watch on iplayer but I love the fact that there are still youtube commentaries- and also- I have moved to Teddington so I am looking forward to bumping into Mr. Payne on the High Street. Definitely MVP for me.
Basically, in the last three minutes of the match, UCL closes up a 40-point gap-like the second-place horse making a mad dash for the finish line but not _quite_ making it. It seemed like, while the individual team members on UCL were a bit stronger-Josh Mandel seemed particularly sure of answers and Sanjay Prabhakar proved to be valuable in the “history of science” questions (always an asset in these matches)-Open seemed a bit better at collaboratively coming up with the right answers (something that last season’s team from Open tried and often failed to do). The standout was Open team leader Karie Westermann, who, like last season’s Imperial team captain Suraiya Haddad, knew just when to pass (and who continued the Open team leader’s practice of being boldly coiffed-this time with color-coordinated nail polish _complementarily_ applied on the fingers of each hand, which she’d interlock 10:5318:51 in a charmingly contemplative gesture). Perhaps most impressively, she managed to come up with answers on _two_ occasions (10:27 and 15:45) after a bit of casting about, something that usually ends with people stalling out. It’ll be good to see Open, and, very likely, UCL, back for another round.
Also, it's really cool how Westermann nominates her teammates who are more expert at a topic even when she knows the answer herself and can obviously pronounce it perfectly well-- almost as if she doesn't want to deprive them of their due credit
Me too, I was like "really? They got drawn against each other in the first round?" I think both Open and UCL made the last 3 quarterfinals or something
A mere 15 points separated both teams at the end. Bloodbath generally refers to a complete rout. Several points at which the losing team could have recovered. Host even acknowledged Open’s close narrow having “disappeared for the last 10 minutes.”

I know that I'm not the one playing, and I don't know all the strategy that goes into it, but it seems as if a leader is better to say uncertain guesses themselves, instead of nominating, so that team members aren't held publicly accountable for what may otherwise be useful collaboration. Nominating for a word that the leader doesn't know is a reasonable way to prevent losing accidental points, but taking on the uncertainty as a leader encourages potentially shy-er team members to continue contributing good ideas that they aren't sure about to bounce off the team.
@@Roblafo That’s my impression, too. It seems like, most often, the team leader is not quite sure he or she has gotten the answer (i.e., heard it correctly) and it’s just safer-and quicker-to have the team member say it.
It shouldn't be an issue if the answer is in the subject the responder is studying or is especially familiar with, e.g. country of origin. The real difficulty for the Cap is chosing between two reasonable answers to the same question and hoping they pick the right one. Of course in this match that was Open to interpritation.
@@Roblafo totally agree on that being the norm. In this match, I just feel there were a couple of times when an easily pronounced guess was nominated instead of stated, and I wonder how that affects team morale.

Venerable Servant of God Fulton Sheen on the Ascension. “Had Christ remained on earth, sight would have taken the place of faith. In heaven, there will be no faith because His followers will see; there will be no hope, because they will possess; but there will be love for love endureth forever! His leave-taking of the earth combined the Cross and the Crown that governed the smallest detail of His life. The Ascension took place on Mount Olivet at the base of which is Bethany. He led His Apostles out through Bethany, which meant passing through Gethsemane and the very spot where He wept over Jerusalem! Not as from a throne, but from a mountain elevated above the garden with the twisted olive trees crimsoned with His Blood, did He give the final manifestation of His Divine power. His heart was not embittered by His Cross, for the Ascension was the fruit of His Crucifixion. As He said, it was fitting that He suffer in order to enter into His glory. In the Ascension, the Savior did not lay aside the garment of flesh with which He had been clothed; for His human nature would be the pattern of the future glory of other human natures, which would become incorporated to Him through a sharing of His life. Intrinsic and deep was the relation between His Incarnation and His Ascension. The Incarnation or the assuming of a human nature made it possible for Him to suffer and redeem. The Ascension exulted into glory that same human nature that was humbled to the death. A Coronation upon the earth, instead of an Ascension into heaven, would have confined men’s thoughts of Him to the earth. But the Ascension would cause men’s minds and hearts to ascend above the earth. In relation to Himself, it was fitting that the human nature which He took as the instrument for teaching, and governing, and sanctifying, should partake of glory as it shared in shame. It was very hard to believe that He, Who was the Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief, was the beloved Son in Whom the Father was well pleased. It was difficult to believe that He, Who did not come down from a Cross, could ascend into heaven, or that the momentary glory that shone about Him on the Mount of the Transfiguration was a permanent possession. The Ascension put all such doubts away by introducing His human nature into intimate and eternal communion with God. The human nature which He took was mocked as a Prophet when they blindfolded Him and asked Him to tell who struck Him; He was mocked as a King when they put upon Him a mock-robe of royalty and gave Him a reed of straw for a scepter; finally He was mocked as a Priest when they challenged Him, Who as offering Himself as a Victim, to come down from the Cross. By the Ascension His triple office of Teacher, King, and Priest was vindicated.” From the Life of Christ by Fulton Sheen Source www.thecatholichomeschool.com/the-ascension-quotations/#google_vignette
